Running from Disaster

Prologue

"It's not that some people have willpower and some don't. It's that some people are ready to change and others are not."

~James Gordon

Dean Thomas reread the owl for a third time, and willed himself to feel anything other than dismay. No other emotion filled his sense though, and he sighed. He settled the note, whose simple, short sentences seemed to radiate fear and despair, on his desk, and buried his head in his hands.

"Damn." The half-whispered, half-groaned word hung in the air, and then silence ensued, the type of silence where the wizard's silent 'oh shit, oh shit, oh shit' was palpable.

"Dean?"

He startled at his mother's call, and looked up with a guilty, nervous expression on his face as Mrs. Thomas opened the door and smiled in at her son. Her smile faded at his expression, and she immediately looked torn between suspicion and worry. "Dean, what's going on?"

He swallowed, his mouth suddenly dry. "N-nothing, Mum, really." Trying to smile and knowing it was wobbly at best, he covered the note with his hands. The tremulous smile vanished at his mother's sharp look, and he resisted the urge to squirm like a five-year-old caught with his hand in the cookie jar. "It's nothing about the war, Mum, I swear. I'd tell you if anything was happening. It's just...girl stuff."

His mother looked suspicious, obviously resisting the urge to ask which particular girl this 'stuff' revolved around. "Well, it's almost time for supper, love. Come down in about fifteen minutes."

"Yes, Mum," he said obediently, even as his stomach roiled at the mere mention of food. "I'll be down in fifteen. Just need to send a response to..." He bit back the girl's name, and concluded, "...the owl I got." At his mother's raised eyebrow, he ducked his head. "It'll be a short note, Mum. I won't be late for supper."

When he didn't raise his head to meet her eyes, his mother sighed. "Make sure you're not, or there will be no supper left for you. Brice has been eating enough for five people since he started his last growth spurt, and Chase looks to be following Brice's lead." Despite her words, Mrs. Thomas's tone regarding Dean's two younger brothers was affectionate.

"I won't be late," he repeated, and this time looked up and forced a smile onto his face, one he hoped was believable. "Really." As soon as his mother left though, the smile vanished.

Dean looked back at the note. How was it that a single note could change his life forever? His long, slender fingers trembling, he picked up the note once more, and reread it for the fourth and final time.

Dean,

I'm pregnant. What are we going to do?

Ginny

Finally came an emotion other than dismay, and this one was horror. "Oh bloody hell," Dean breathed out, more terrified of this sudden news than he was of You-Know-Who. "What are we going to do?"
