- Author's Note:
- Hi everyone! I KNOW I have...erm...four other fics in the process right now, but I needed a break from angst, kidnapping, and plays...so this is that break! I am so grateful to RaverAngel on this fic-she took the time to COMPLETELY go over this fic and tell the brutal, honest truth even when I didn't want her to. Kudos go to Luella, my dear BETA, for tweaking my spelling errors, and to all my other online friends for understanding I just need to vay-cay on my stories for a while. It helps my brain...plus I'm writing a book, so it's all good. ;)
Ginny stared out the window at the Burrow, contemplating the unfairness of her life- normal behavior for a teenage girl. How is it fair, she wondered, that Draco Malfoy, the prat, should get everything he ever wanted, while my family, all of us good people, suffers through poverty?
"I wish," she said aloud to herself, "I sometimes wish I was him. How is it that he gets his way nine times out of ten?"
I wanted to be like you
I wanted everything
It was three months later, and Ginny was back at Hogwarts, much to her relief. She began to reason with herself, and was ready to test her independence. I'll try being like Malfoy for a few weeks, she thought to herself. What could it hurt?
She began to push her friends away with little, stinging insults and hurt Harry and Hermione's feelings. Both of them were confused, as were her brothers. She ignored the lecture they read her, so they, in turn, decided to ignore HER. Wait! she thought to herself. This isn't how it's supposed to be! They're supposed to appreciate the fact that I can function without them or their love!
So I tried to be like you
And I got swept away
The days passed, and no one would listen to her pleas for forgiveness, or even her reasoning behind her behavior. She decided to walk to the Astronomy Tower-alone, as was usual now-and contemplate what she had done to herself.
Opening one of the many doors off of the tower, Ginny stepped into the tiny room and froze. Draco Malfoy was sitting on the windowsill, looking down at the ground many feet below.
"Malfoy?" she asked softly. He turned and looked at her, his eyes filled with pain. He then stood up on the ledge, getting ready to jump. "Draco, don't!" she screamed, staring at him. "Do you think no one cares about you?"
"No one does care," he muttered, silver-blond hair falling over his face, "do they, Weasley? You don't care, my parents don't care, my bloody sidekicks don't care-why should I?"
"Because it's your life! Do you want the indignity of dying by suicide? Of throwing yourself out of the Astronomy Tower to your bloody end in the grasses of Hogwarts, run by a man your father despises?" she asked. "Besides, the only reason you claim I don't care is because you haven't let me anywhere near you to get to know you. How am I supposed to care if I don't know who you are?" Ginny shook her head. I never realized...
I didn't know that it was so cold
And you needed someone to show you the way
"Are you trying to save me, Ginny Weasley?" he asked softly, looking at her.
"Yes, I am." She strode across the room and grabbed his hand. "If you jump, I'll have to go with you. Do you really want that?"
So I took your hand and we figured out
That when the tide comes
I'd take you away
"Do you want to be saved?" she asked.
"Do I?" he asked, hesitating. Then he nodded. "Take me away, Ginny. I can't leave on my own." He got off the ledge, with Ginny quaking in relief. They climbed down the stairs, still hand in hand.
If you want to
I can save you
I can take you away from here
The next day, it was as if nothing had changed. Malfoy went back to making fun of Ron, Harry, and Hermione, and Ginny apologized to everyone. But a new friendship had formed that night, between two unlikely people-the littlest Weasley and the son of a Death Eater. Each held the knowledge of the night before, both knowing something about each other; or, at least, enough to form a common bond between them.
So lonely inside
So busy out there
And all you wanted was somebody who cared
Four years went by. Draco and Ginny still kept in touch by owl post still held a strong friendship with each other. It never developed into anything more, though Ginny often wished it had.
One particular afternoon in May, Ginny was sitting at her apartment window off Diagon Alley, thinking of that night in the Astronomy Tower. An owl arrived.
"I wonder who this is from," she wondered as she opened the envelope. She began reading the short letter written inside, from Harry.
Ginny-
I am so sorry there was no one else to tell you this, but Ron was killed this afternoon on a raid of Avery Nott's former residence. The funeral will be held at the Burrow, with the minister who did Hermione and mine's wedding. I'll see you- Harry
Ginny stared at the letter. Sobs suddenly began to rack her body, and she fell from her seat in grief. She sat there for several hours, screaming and crying in rage at the stupid Death Eaters.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Ginny wiped her eyes and went to answer it. She opened the door and the ultimate surprise stood before her.
Draco Malfoy was on Ginny's doorstep, holding a pot of marigolds and a stuffed bear. "I came as soon as I heard," he murmured, stepping inside. Ginny fell to the ground and started to sob. Draco leaned down and collected her in his arms.
I'm sinking slowly
So hurry hold me
Three days later, Ginny was at Ron's funeral, standing beside his open grave. Draco stood beside her, holding her hand, refusing to let go. Ginny was grateful for his presence in a way she never could have imagined.
Your hand is all I have to keep me hanging on
Suddenly he turned to her. "Ginny," he said hesitantly. "I have to go."
"Draco, why? Why now? Please tell me where you're going!" she pleaded.
"I-I can't," he stuttered, Disapparating from her side. She fell beside her brother's grave, with no one left but Fred and George to comfort her.
Please can you tell me
So I can finally see
Where you go when you're gone
Draco had been missing now for two weeks, and Ginny was beginning to get concerned. He'd made no effort to contact her, which was unusual in itself, but then there was the fact that even Harry had no idea where he was, for once. Harry always knew where Draco was, because of the resistance movement against the Death Eaters; Draco was one, after all.
Suddenly a phone call came in. Odd, she thought, staring at the phone. I never get calls at this time of the night. She answered.
"Hello?" she asked quizzically.
"Gin?" Harry's voice came from the other end of the phone. "We've found Malfoy. You might want to come help us-he won't listen to anyone."
"I'll be right there," she said automatically, hanging up the phone and running for her clothes.
Ginny arrived at Goyle manner within an hour of receiving Harry's call. Racing inside, she ran directly into Harry.
"Harry, where is he?" she asked worriedly. "How bad is he?"
"Bad, Ginny," he admitted to her. "Really bad." He pointed down the hall to his location, and Ginny ran as fast as her legs would carry her. How could I have never told him? she mourned to herself. God, I love him! He needs to know! What if he doesn't even remember me?
She reached the door of the room, and stopped short. Draco was sitting on the floor, staring at his cut and bruised hands. She bit back a scream of rage and ran to him.
"Oh, Draco," she muttered, pulling him to her. "Are you all right?"
"Ginny," he whispered weakly. "Thank God you're here. I need to tell you-" he gasped for air.
"Do you want to be saved?" she asked him, just as she had so many years before.
If you want to
I can save you
I can take you away from here
"Yes, Ginny," he muttered. "Yes."
"Then let's get out of here," she said, determined. "Will THIS scare you straight, Draco Malfoy?"
"Ginny, I was scared straight long ago," he groaned as they stepped out the door. "I've been alone for so long-I need you to know now."
So lonely inside
So busy out there
"What do you want to tell me, Draco?" she asked, hoping he would say what she wanted him to.
"God, Ginny, do I have to spell it out?" he asked softly. "I love you. YOU are the one who scared me straight, four years ago. Don't you get it? You made me who I am-Draco Malfoy, resistance spy."
And all you wanted
Was somebody who cares
The ride to St. Mungo's was a long one for Ginny Weasley. She had saved someone-by caring, and by a strange coincidence. Now, more than ever, was she glad for that coincidence. She didn't know if she could bear losing him now, not when she loved him more than ever before. She sighed. The only thing she could do now was stay with him; stay with him until the bitter end (or the bittersweet end).
All you wanted was somebody who cares
If you need me you know I'll be there
Oh, yeah
Ginny sat by the unconscious Draco day and night. Hermione and Harry repeatedly tried to get her to leave his side, but she refused. The only way she could keep her Draco was by staying with him.
"Gin?" a weak voice suddenly said. Draco had finally awakened. The moment, obviously, had caught her off-guard; Ginny was asleep, her head on Draco's stomach. He smiled at her, and began stroking her hair. God, I love her, he thought to himself. If only she would wake up...
"Hmm?" she stirred, lifting her head from Draco. She looked at him, expecting to see a sleeping face and Hermione at the door, but instead; instead she saw twinkling gray eyes looking in her direction. "Draco! Oh, thank God! Are you all right?" she asked in a flurry, nearly beside herself.
"I should be asking you the same question," he asked, concerned. "How long have you been sitting by this bed?"
Ginny blushed. "Err-about-oh say, a month?"
"You sat by my bedside for a MONTH, Ginny Weasley? Have you left me at all?" She shook her head. "That is crazy-"
Ginny hung her head.
"But that's also the reason I love you." She picked her head up and grinned. "Now, do we want to waste any time?" Ginny looked at him quizzically.
"What do you mean by that?" she asked, confused.
"I mean, do we want to waste time dating and all that? Or should we cut to the chase and get married? If you will marry me, of course, I mean, you don't have to but-"
Ginny leaned over and kissed him giddily. "I'd love to, Mister Malfoy." He gave her a wide grin.
"Well, then, Miss Weasley, you'll need a ring," he smiled. "Where are we going to get that?" Suddenly he saw her last box of Cracker Jacks, and grinned. Rifling through, he found a small, aluminum ring with a plastic star on top. "Ah, perfect." She giggled in spite of herself.
"Will you marry me?" he asked, making it official as he slid the ring on her finger.
"Yes," she smiled. "Yes, I will."
"You have saved me again, Ginny."
"How?" she asked.
"You just have. Any questions?"
"None at all, Draco. None at all."
If you want to
I can save you
I can take you away from here
A year later, Ginny was putting the final touches on her silk veil, making sure the white lilies were positioned perfectly in her hair. She turned and smiled at Hermione.
"Well, what do you think?" she asked her friend and matron of honor.
"Beautiful, Ginny," the woman returned honestly. "Beautiful." Together, they walked into the lobby of the small church. Hermione went ahead of her, grinning.
The wedding march began. Ginny strode down the aisle, happier than she'd been in her whole life. Draco grinned at her from the front of the church, and she smiled back. She reached him at last.
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to unite these two before the presence of God and these witnesses-"
Ginny began to tear up, watching her beloved watching her. Ginny listened as the priest asked if there were any objections, and as there were none (to Ginny's complete relief) the priest turned to her.
"Do you have anything to say to Draco, Ginny?" he asked softly. She nodded, and turned to her husband-to-be.
"Draco, you are the reason I've kept my sanity this last year. You are the reason I learned to love; you are the only one who truly understood how I felt. And now, here I am, ready to be your wife. I love you, Draco."
"Draco, do you have anything to say to Ginny?" he asked the young man quietly. Draco nodded as well.
"Gin-you have saved me so many times I cannot count. You saved me from suicide at age sixteen, you saved me from derangement and near death last year, and you saved me from myself by marrying me today. You know, I used to feel alone in this world, as though nobody cared, even if I did act as though insulting Gryffindors and becoming a Death Eater was everything to me."
So lonely inside
So busy out there
"And now-now I don't feel so alone anymore. I needed someone to care, and you did, Ginny. I love you now, more than ever, as you stand before me, marrying me. I love you more than anything."
And all you wanted
Was somebody who cares
Years passed from their wedding day. Before Ginny knew what had happened to her, she had a four-year-old girl named Lacy and a baby boy named Bryce. She was the happiest wife and mother anyone could ever know, always busy, always watching her two children; not unlike her own mother.
One particular afternoon while Ginny was pushing Lacy on their backyard swing, Draco came out into the yard. Ginny stopped the swing and went over to him.
"Where are you going?" she asked skeptically. "Not getting back into the spy business, are you?" she asked, wiggling her eyebrows.
Please can you tell me
So I can finally see
Where you go when you're gone
"Are you joking?" he asked, laughing aloud at the very thought. "No, Percy just called. They need me back in at the International Magical Cooperation offices. After all, if I am to be the next Minister of Magic, I need to be on call right?"
She laughed at the thought, and gave her husband one last sound kiss on the lips before he strolled into the house to Disapparate.
