- Hello everyone. This is my first fan fic. I have read other fics and I have been inspired to write one. I would appreciate any feedback I can get. Thanks.
Harry, Ron and Hermione came down to the common room roughly around the same time. They all looked terribly exhausted. “We weren’t that bad when we were first years, were we? I mean, those kids were completely crazy,” complained Ron. “We probably were, but it shows how much we’ve grown up since then. I even had to put out a small fire that a girl started with accidental magic,” exclaimed Hermione. “They all kept fighting over the beds, then they wouldn’t settle down. Me and Ron even had to break up a fight. I hope that the rest of the year isn‘t like this because I don‘t think that I will be able to take it. That would be way too much work,” said Harry. Everyone stayed up late that night. Everyone except Lavender. She hadn’t even bothered to come down after showing the first years to bed. She looked more exhausted then the rest. She had no idea what she was getting into when she was chosen to be a prefect. Everyone wanted to get reacquainted with each other. Fred and George kept everyone entertained with jokes. They seemed to be going the extra mile this year because it was their last. Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Ginny stayed in their own little corner.
Hermione noticed that Ginny kept glancing at Harry when he wasn’t looking. Then she would give Hermione a pleading look. Hermione was going to have to find a way to talk to Harry. But she had to do it in a way that he wouldn’t get suspicious. But there was enough time for this some other time. Tomorrow they would start classes so they wanted to relax as much as possible. They were all talking about what this year was going to be like. They hadn’t even seen who the new defense against the dark arts teacher was going to be. It started getting late and everyone looked tired. They all said their goodnights and when to their respective dormitories. Harry glanced over at Ron and saw that he had fallen asleep once his head had touched the pillow. But Harry wasn’t far behind. He was soon drifting to a wonderful slumber. He woke up in the middle of the night.
He had the dream again. But what the hell did it mean? Should he tell someone about it? He thought about it for a while and he decided that he wouldn’t tell anyone. He wanted more than anything for this to be a normal year and he didn’t want to start a commotion by saying that he has been having a weird reoccurring dream. He started thinking of other things. He ran the conversation that Snape had with them through his mind. He was very excited about what was to happen. He was very happy that they were going to learn how to duel. He had really enjoyed the dueling club during their second year but they hadn’t really learned anything except how to disarm someone. But this time it would be different. They were going to actually learn how to cast spells and counter spells. But what excited him even more was that he was going to be trained on becoming and animagus. Not many people could do this. He knew it was going to be hard but he was up to the challenge. He knew that his father would be proud that he was following in his footsteps.
“Harry wake up,” exclaimed Ron. Harry had not woken up at the time he wanted. He didn’t want to be late for breakfast. They would be getting their class schedules today. Harry got up and brushed his teeth. He tried to comb his hair so that it looked tidy but it was useless. His black hair had a mind of its own. “Oh well,” thought Harry. He went to his trunk and pulled took out his prefect badge and pinned it on the front of his robes. He went down to the common room to find that Hermione, Ron, and Ginny were waiting for him. They all walked down to the great hall together. Everyone kept giving glances at Hermione and staring at her badge. She wouldn’t admit it but she was enjoying the attention. All these years she had tried to hide herself in books but it looked as if this year Hermione was going to come out of her shell. Ron also looked to be exceptionally cheerful. Harry knew exactly why. He finally was equal to Harry. He was a prefect just like he was. No longer did he have to live in Harry’s shadow.
All four of them sat at the end of Gryffindor table. They had bacon, eggs, and toast followed by a delicious ice cold glass of pumpkin juice. Harry looked around and noticed that Draco Malfoy was giving him a malicious glare. “I guess this year is going to be just like every other year,” said Harry. Hermione, Ron and Ginny looked in the direction that Harry was looking and realized what he was talking about. Then Harry looked over at the Ravenclaw table and was looking at Cho Chang. She looked at him and gave him a glare worse than Malfoy had given him. “She still thinks I’m guilty. Everyone else realizes what happened but she still wants to blame me,” Harry said sadly. “The only reason that you care so much about this is because you still like her Harry,” stated Ron. Hermione and Ginny both looked up from their plates and looked at Harry. “I don’t like her anymore Ron. That was just a crush that I had last year but I don’t feel the same way anymore,” said Harry. Ron knew that he was telling the truth by the look he had on his face. He could tell when Harry was lying but he wasn’t now. Hermione and Ginny both smiled when they heard this news but neither of them noticed the other one.
“Oh look, we have Care of Magical Creatures followed by double Transfiguration,” stated Hermione. “Well at least it isn’t double Potions or Divination,” said Harry with relief. “Well, we better get going, we wouldn’t want to be late for our first class,” said Ron. Everyone turned and looked at him. This was very out of the ordinary for Ron to say. This was something that everyone expected Hermione to say. “What? You all act like I said that You Know Who is my new best friend or something,” This got a big laugh from everyone. And with that, they headed down to Hagrid’s hut. There they met the Slytherins which they shared the class with.
“Oh look who it is! It’s Harry Potter and the fan club,” stated Malfoy. Like usual, all the Slytherins turned to look and started laughing. “You are so immature Malfoy, why don’t you just shut up because class is about to start,” shouted Hermione. “Can you really call this a class? I’m sure that uneducated giant’s dog could do a better job teaching the class than he can,” Malfoy said with a smile. “TWENTY POINTS FROM SLYTHERIN FOR INSULTING A TEACHER” yelled Hermione. Malfoy stared with an indescribable look on his face and turned to join the other Slytherins without another word. He wasn’t used to being spoken down to. But right now he didn’t have a choice but to put up wit it because she was in a much higher position in the school than he was. The Gryffindors cheered Hermione on. Everyone knew that with Hermione around, the Slytherins were going to end up with zero house points if they kept their attitudes up.
Hagrid stepped out of his hut at that point. “Lo Class” said Hagrid. Harry, Ron and Hermione gave him a big smile and received a wink from their care of magical creatures professor. He explained that this year they were going to have a very important task. There had been a disaster in this magical forest named “Haviloki”. It was in South America south of Brazil. And unfortunately, eighteen newborn “Sledivors” were left abandoned. Since Sedivors used to be hunted because of their magical powers, there aren’t that many left. So their job this year was going to be keeping the Sledivors alive. Like usual, a hand shot up in the air. “Yes Hermione?” asked Hagrid. What exactly are they?” “Well I was just going to show you,” He led them into his hut and showed them the eighteen babies. They were light blue baby horses. “They don’t walk yet. They won’t even open their eyes yet for about another week or a week and a half. Your job today will be to feed them and then make sure they are plenty warm,” “But Hagrid, there are eighteen of them and nineteen of us,” stated Harry. “I hadn’t even noticed that. Oh well its better off that way. You and Hermione can take care of that one, he’s special,” pointed out Hagrid. Hagrid had pointed to the baby horse at the end which seemed to be darker than the rest. “What is so special about her?” asked Hermione. “You’ll find out in time” and with that last comment, they went to work. Harry knew that there was something odd about this Sledivor if it was going to take two of them to care for it.
“That was a very good class,” stated Ron. “Yeah, well I hope that the rest of our classes turn out to be just as good as that one was,” said Harry “We have double Transfiguration next. Let's go,” said Hermione. They got to class and sat in the back as usual. They took out their ink, quills, and their books. They were ready to learn something new and hopefully exciting. “Listen up class. This year we are going to be transforming living organisms to a different kind of organism. This is much more advanced magic than we have ever done,” stated Professor McGonagall. Everyone looked really excited about learning how to do this. She had been telling them since their first year that they would build up to this and now the time had finally come. “Of course, we will be starting off small. Very small. We will be learning to turn insects into other insects. Everyone turn to page twelve in your books and follow the instructions. I will be checking on your progress shortly.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione turned to page twelve. “Can I please see Mr. Potter, Mr. Weasley, and Miss Granger in my office?” asked McGonagall. All three of them got up with a suspicious look on their face. They entered her office and she shut the door behind them. “As you three have already been informed, you will be put through some special training. My job to help you along that path is to teach you how to do wandless magic. You never know when you will not have your wand and must protect yourself. And plus, wandless magic is practically undetectable. Which means that we are trusting you with this. Once you learn how to do it the ministry will not know if you do magic outside of school while underage. Dumbledore thinks this is wise because he doesn’t trust the ministry. He knows that there are death eaters infiltrated in the ministry. And if you do feel that you have to do magic, he doesn’t want them to be able to pick up on it” explained Professor McGonagall. “But isn’t that very difficult to do?” asked Hermione. “I am 100 percent positive that you and Harry will be able to do it Miss Granger. Harry has many special abilities and you are, let's face it the top student in the school. The one I am a little worried about is Mr. Weasley.” Ron’s jaw dropped at this statement. He looked more hurt than Harry and Hermione had ever seen him. He couldn’t even look them in the eyes. Professor McGonagall seemed to pick up on this and kept speaking.
“Ronald, look up at me and keep your head high,” said McGonagall. Ron picked up his head and looked her in the eye. “Let me explain my reasoning behind my statement. You are a very special student and have improved more than I could have expected in these last years. I know that you have the skills to do this but I don’t know if you have the discipline. For example, take a look at Harry and Hermione. They know how to keep calm when they are under pressure. In order to do wandless magic your mind must be calm. You have to clear your mind and focus only on what you are trying to accomplish. I know that Harry and Hermione are capable of doing that. And it is no secret that you have a little trouble with your temper. That is the only thing that could possibly hold you back. If you are too angry to focus you will fail. Do you understand what I mean” “Of course I do. And I will work as hard as I can to control my temper. That is with a little help from my friends,” said Ron. “Of course,” said Harry and Hermione in unison.
“Like I told your peers, I will be starting you off small. What I want you to start off with is to change a beetle into a spider only using your mind,” said McGonagall. Ron shuttered at the word spider. “Well Mr. Weasley if you are not all that fond of arachnids then you can turn your beetle into a butterfly. The more colors the more extra credit,” said McGonagall with a smile. “But you still haven’t given us specific instructions on how we are to go about with the transformations. How do we perform the wandless magic?” asked Hermione. “I have already said that you must use your mind. You have to clear your mind of everything and focus on what it is that you want to do. You have to imagine it happening. You should be able to see it happening. It’ll help if you close your eyes while you do it. But once you get the hang of it you won’t have to close your eyes. It’ll be so natural to you that you won’t even have to really think about it that much. Well lets go into the classroom and try it while I check up on the other students. Merlin only knows what they have been up to. Oh and one more thing, I would really appreciate it if you three could sit up front from now on so that I can monitor your progress.”
With this final note from their Professor they all walked into the classroom. No one had been able to transform their beetle into another insect and they were equipped with their wands. The trio couldn’t even imagine how much harder it was going to be without a wand. But they did as they were told. Their beetles were in little glass boxes so that they wouldn’t go running all over the place. Harry closed his eyes. He envisioned his beetle slowly morphing into the spider. He opened his eyes but had no success. He looked over at Hermione and she had a disappointed look on her face. Apparently she hadn’t had any luck either. They turned to look at Ron. His eyes were still closed and he was lost in concentration. Ron could see in his mind the beetle becoming slender and sprouting wings with beautiful colors. Her heard a small pop but didn’t open his eyes. He heard the Professor speaking. “Will everyone please turn their attention to Mr. Weasley,” said McGonagall. Ron opened his eyes now and was shocked at what he saw. In the Glass box was the most beautiful butterfly that he had ever seen. Their were colors on the wings that he had never even seen before. The whole class stared at him for a moment. He had actually done what no one else had done. And without a wand, although no one knew that he did it with out a wand. He was very pleased with himself.
Everyone went back on concentrating on their own beetle. Everyone except Harry and Hermione. “Wow Ron, I’m impressed. Could you change it back?” asked Harry. “I don’t know, I’ll try,” said Ron. He barely closed his eyes this time before he hear the pop and saw the beetle in the box again. By the end of class he didn’t have to close his eyes at all. He could now transform the beetle into a butterfly and vice versa with just a swish of his hand. Harry and Hermione had still not been able to do it. McGonagall told them that they should take them back to the common room so that they could practice. She told Ron that he had earned twenty points for Gryffindor for his amazing transfiguration. They didn’t have a class right now so they decided that they were going to go outside and take a walk before lunch. They found Ginny on their way out and she decided to go with them because she too had a break. They walked for a little bit and then they decided to sit by the lake. Ron saw a butterfly and with a swish of his hand he turned it into a beetle. “How the hell did you do that Ron? You didn’t even have your wand,” said Ginny in surprise. “McGonagall is teaching Harry, Hermione and I to do wandless magic. But I am the only one that has been able to do it so far,” Ron said happily. Ginny looked shocked. “But you can’t tell a soul. I shouldn’t even have told you. But seeing as you’re my sister and all I think I could trust you. But don’t even tell Fred and George,” cautioned Ron. “Well I personally don’t plan to sleep tonight until I get it. Are you with me Harry?” asked Hermione. “Of course, I wouldn’t want to fall behind on my first day,” stated Harry. “Well, I’ll help you. I could give you some tips,” said Ron. He now had a smile on his face. He never was the one who would provide help. He was usually on the receiving end. Hermione didn’t look too happy about this. They all stood up and headed to the castle for lunch.
