Chapter 3: Familiar Feelings

"You´re a Slytherin?!" Draco exclaimed, shock covering his handsome face. "Are you serious?"

"Why would I lie?" Chloe asked, slightly confused at Draco´s sudden outburst. "And what´s so wrong with being a Slytherin?"

"Nothing! Nothing at all," Draco replied, covering his initial shock with a smile. "In fact, I am a Slytherin as well. I´m just surprised that both the Head Boy and Head Girl are from the same house this year. I don´t believe that´s ever happened before. Quite an honor for Slytherin, wouldn´t you agree?"

"Yes, I guess it is," she said, smiling again. "Now, I think I´ll go unpack and then head to bed. I am quite tired from my trip," she finished, heading to her room and closing the door.

Heading towards his own room, Draco smirked at the thought of know-it-all Hermione Granger being placed in Slytherin. `Probably to ensure Voldemort doesn´t find her,´ he thought. `I wonder how she´ll get on with the rest of the Slytherins.´ He laughed quietly, picturing the first encounter.

The next few days went by in a blur for the pair, as the teachers filled their schedule with meetings and planning times for the upcoming year. Draco had tried to talk to Hermione, or `Chloe,´ many times but was constantly getting interrupted by one distraction or another. In the week they had been there, the two hadn´t gotten past their initial introduction when it came to forming a friendship.

The night before the first day of school, Draco finally got his chance. He had just walked into the common room, when he found Chloe curled up on the couch with a copy of `Hogwarts; A History´ in her lap. `Some things never change,´ he thought, smirking.

"Hi there," he said, smiling warmly. "What are you reading?"

"Hi," Chloe replied, returning the smile as she motioned for him to take the seat beside her. "I found this original copy of `Hogwarts; A History´ and couldn´t resist. Have you read it?"

"Yes, I have," he answered. "A few times, actually."

"It´s all so fascinating, don´t you agree?" Chloe asked, looking into his eyes as her own took on a sparkling tint of light blue.

"Yes it is," he answered, getting lost in the color and depth of her eyes, "but it's nothing compared to your eyes. How do you do it? I mean, change the color. I´ve read about Chameleon Eyes before but I´ve never found anything about the concept or purpose behind them."

"Well I don´t know too much about them except what my mother told me." she began, "My mother´s eyes would usually change with her emotions, so I guess that´s what mine do as well. Though I don´t really know when they change and how I feel with each color."

"Well, then I guess I´ll have to figure it all out," Draco said, smiling slyly as he took her hand and kissed it softly. "I guess this is good night, Milady; we have a very busy day tomorrow, so you will need your rest."

"Good night, Draco," she answered, laughing softly at his gesture, before getting up as well and heading into her bedroom.

The next morning proved to be quite eventful for Chloe. She was so nervous about her first day that she hadn´t been able to sleep much that night and eventually gave up trying. She got up early, wandering out onto the balcony to watch the sunrise. As she stepped outside, she noticed that Draco was already there. He stood very still, staring out at the sky. His silver eyes looked much darker than usual and a troubled look covered his handsome face. His platinum hair hung loosely around his fair visage. Looking down, Chloe noticed that he hadn´t bothered pulling on a shirt and only wore his dark green pajama bottoms.

All of a sudden, Draco turned to face her, a far-off expression covering his face.

"Oh, good morning, Miss Chloe," he said, a soft smile spreading across his lips at the sight of her in merely a small pink tank top and matching pajama shorts.

"Good morning, Mister Malfoy," Chloe replied, smiling, as a soft blush covered her cheeks and her eyes wandered from his handsome face down to his lean and muscular body.

"Ready for your first day?" he asked, pretending not to notice as she checked him out.

"No," she answered, her smile disappearing, "I am so nervous that I keep imagining myself falling on my face as I´m heading toward the front of the Hall and everyone laughing at how clumsy the new Head Girl is!"

"You won´t fall on your face," he began, laughing. "You´re much too graceful for that, and just in case you happen to have a clumsy moment, I´ll be there to catch you before you hit the floor."

"Well, thank you for you kind words, Mister Malfoy!" she replied, laughing before she headed back inside to shower and dress.

The day went by quite slowly for Chloe, who spent it reading and doing homework that wasn´t due for the next three weeks. Finally, around 6 o´clock, she heard a soft knocking at her door. Before opening it, she glanced into the mirror one last time for a final check. Her raven hair fell softly to her waist, a few front pieces pulled back and held in place with a small silver ribbon. She wore just enough make-up to accentuate her features but not enough to be described as trashy or overdone. Her fitted black robes clung to every curve and showed off her perfect creamy complexion. Smiling softly at her reflection, she turned and walked out to meet Draco.

As Chloe stepped out of her room, Draco felt his knees go weak. He knew she was pretty but seeing her now, as nervous as she was, he thought she looked stunning.

"You´re staring," she said, looking down as a light pink hue covered her cheeks.

"Sorry," he said, blushing as well, "Your eyes are silver. You´re nervous," he concluded, as a smile of triumph spread across his face.

"Brilliant observation," she answered sarcastically.

"Well, shall we go, then?" Draco asked, holding out his arm for her to take. "The rest of the students should already be in the Hall."

"Yes, thank you," she answered, taking his arm as they made their way down to the Great Hall.

~*~*~*~

In the Great Hall, the students were all sorted and seated as the Headmaster stood to make his announcements. The students were silent as usual, but it was a different kind of silence as all eyes focused on the empty spot across from Ronald Weasley and Harry Potter. The seat usually occupied by Hermione Granger.

"Staff and students, I welcome you all back for another year at Hogwarts. I hope this year will be as enjoyable for you all as the years past. Just a few start of term announcements: the Forbidden Forest is off limits to all students and there shall be a Fall Ball in 3 weeks´ time for all students in fourth year and above. My last announcement is a very sad one, I´m afraid. As you all may have noticed, Miss Hermione Granger is not with us today. She was, in fact, this year´s Head Girl but had to decline the job after making a very important decision to leave the Wizarding world this past summer. Please do not try and contact her as she has asked not to be a part of our world any longer. This brings us to another matter: this year´s Head Boy and Girl," the Headmaster said, as the doors to the Great Hall opened and two attractive teenagers entered. "And here they are! Please give a warm welcome to our new Head Boy, Mister Draco Malfoy, and our New Head Girl, Miss Chloe Snape-Laurent. Miss Laurent is a new student here at Hogwarts and has joined the Slytherin House. As you may have guessed, she is also the daughter of Professor Snape. I hope that we can all make her feel at home here at Hogwarts. Now, on with the feast!"

~*~*~*~

Chloe and Draco smiled at the students and made their way to the Slytherin table. Sitting down, Draco introduced her to Pansy Parkinson, Blaise Zabini and Alec Zabini, Millicent Bulstrode, Gregory Goyle, & Vincent Crabbe.

Pansy was a short, pretty girl with honey-blond hair that fell in waves just below her shoulders and bright blue eyes. She seemed a bit snobby but nice enough.

Blaise was a bit taller than Pansy, with burgundy curls to her shoulders and dark brown eyes. She smiled warmly and gestured for the pair to sit beside her.

Alec, Blaise´s cousin, was probably about 6'2" with a well-built body. His black hair fell in curls around his eyes and cheeks, enhancing the brightness of his navy blue eyes. He seemed a bit cocky as he winked her way, but nice enough since the wink was followed by a warm smile.

Millicent was short and a little chubby with brown curls to her chin and light blue eyes. She seemed quite shy but very nice. She also seemed to fancy Gregory Goyle, as Chloe constantly caught the pair exchanging smiles.

Suddenly, she felt as though someone was watching her. She looked up to find many pairs of eyes on her, but none seemed to be causing the familiar feeling she was getting. Letting her eyes wander from the Slytherin table, she saw a handsome boy with jet-black hair and emerald-green eyes looking her way. He looked about her age. The minute their eyes met, she knew he was the one making her feel this way. Feel so warm inside...as though she knew him. As though he knew her.... as though they were the best of friends.

~*~*~*~

Allowing his eyes to fall on her, Harry couldn´t help thinking how beautiful she was. He didn´t care that she was a Slytherin. He didn´t care who her father was. He didn´t care that she´d held onto Malfoy´s hand when they had walked into the Great Hall. He didn´t care about any of that. All he cared about was her. There was something familiar about her. The way she carried herself. The way she smiled. It was all so familiar.

All of a sudden, she looked up and caught his eyes on her. As their eyes locked, he noticed her eyes change from the cold silver to a deep violet. There was something so familiar in those eyes; something so similar to the eyes of another. Judging by the questioning look on her pretty face, she must have thought so as well.

He must have been in deep thought, because no matter how loudly Ron talked, he just didn´t seem to be paying attention. Finally snapping out of his trance, he noticed Ron giving him a worried look.

"What?" Harry asked, slightly put off.

"Nothing, you just seemed to be in another world," Ron answered, still looking worried.

"Sorry, Ron, just thinking about Hermione, " Harry lied. "Do you think we should owl her?"

"I don´t know, Harry," Ron began, "Dumbledore said not to."

"I don´t care what Dumbledore said. She is our best friend and at the least she should give us an explanation," Harry replied, looking a little angry.

"You´re right," Ron said after a few moments.

"I know," the other boy said, smiling smugly as they got up and headed toward their dorms.
