Married and Muggle
"We'll be living as muggles?" Ron whispered worriedly to Harry. "I don't know the first thing about being a muggle, I mean, you and Hermione have been living with muggles your whole lives. I've been living with Fred and George. The only thing I know about muggles is that they're nutters. They sew people up for Merlin's sake!"
"Harry, Ron," Hermione cut in to Ron's tirade, "Dumbledore is assigning partners."
Ron immediately closed his mouth, he may not know exactly why it was his heart started jumping when Hermione Granger came around, but he knew that she had him trained to do just about anything. Except not argue and do his homework.
"Draco Malfoy, Lavender Brown, you will be in house number four." Dumbledore was saying "Harry Potter, Ginny Weasley, you will be in house number ten. Hannah Abbot, Dean Thomas, house Twelve. Ron Weasley," Ron sucked in his breath, knowing that the name Dumbledore called out would be his pretend wife for the next month "Hermione Granger, house thirteen."
"That's great, mate." Harry was saying sarcastically, "You get to be with someone who knows all about muggles and I'm with your sister." Harry cringed as Ginny punched him hard in the shoulder.
Ron glanced at Hermione to see how she was taking the idea of being married to him for a month; she looked totally oblivious to the fact that she was going to be moving her things into a two bedroom house that would be their home for the next month. What was Dumbledore playing at anyway? Coming up with this crazy, learn how young adults live in the muggle world. Gain new experience, and learn the responsibilities of being married. Was he trying to keep them from ever getting married and having kids?
Then again the look on Malfoys' face was almost enough to make this project worth it, almost. Maybe Dumbledore wasn't so off track; the thought of Malfoy having kids was scary, since they'd go to the same school as Hermione and his own kids. 'Whoa, Weasley, Hermione's' kids, Harry's kids, and my kids will all go to Hogwarts. Hermione and I will not have kids together!' Ron shook his head to clear it of any strange thoughts.
"Ron," Hermione placed a hand on his arm "you alright? We need to get our things moved."
"Right, um, coming, Hermione." They walked in silence as they climbed the stairs to their respective Dormitories. Just before they parted ways to retrieve their things, Ron asked, "Hermione, are you okay with this? Us being married, so to speak, I mean?"
"Yeah, Ron, I'm fine. What could be better than being married to your best friend?" Hermione said happily.
"Yeah, nothing better than being married to your best friend." Ron muttered.
With a gusty sigh Hermione set her trunk down, gazing at the little house that was going to become her home for the next month of her existence. 'Well,' she thought 'things could be a lot worse; I could be stuck with Malfoy.'
"Hey, Hermione," Ron said breaking into her thoughts. "What in the name of Merlin is this?" He held an electric can opener by the cord.
"You plug it in," She replied taking it from him "and press the handle down, then these little wheels spin and it cuts the can lid off."
"Yep, muggles are nutters." He said matter-of-factly "Which room do you want?"
"Oh, Ron, do you ever stay on one subject for more than two seconds?" Hermione asked exasperatedly.
"Only when I talk about you, Mione." He muttered under his breath.
"What did you...?" Hermione started, before Dumbledore glided in.
"Are things going alright?" He asked in that all knowing way of his.
"Just fine, sir." Ron replied.
"And you, Miss Granger, how are you settling into muggle life?" HE asked in that slow way of his, that made every word seem like it meant more than the surface value.
"I'm fine; sir, but I have a few questions about the project."
"Such as?"
"Well, what's the point?" Ron stared at her with his mouth agape; did Hermione just question the headmaster?
"Miss. Granger, the point of this assignment, is to promote inter-house unity, and to widen the view of those who have never had to live without magic."
"But, Professor, Ron and I are in the same house and I'm muggle born. Doesn't that kid of defeat the purpose?"
"You may discover," Dumbledore replied "that you and Mister Weasley, have certain talents that could be beneficial to each other throughout the duration of this assignment. After all, you two compliment each other so well, unless, of course, you'd rather be partnered with Draco Malfoy?"
"No, sir," Ron answered before Hermione could speak "You're quite right, who's better suited for Hermione than me? It won't be necessary to change partners, after all you know Malfoy and Hermione's history, and you would be minus a seeker by the end of the week."
Dumbledore chuckled "I am sure we don't want that to happen, so I will leave the partners as is. But remember for any partnership to work, there must be trust, loyalty, and friendship. Good-bye, a teacher will be in to check on your progress every day."
After he left Ron looked at Hermione with one eyebrow raised. Hermione knew what he was thinking; Dumbledore was just as crazy as he thought muggles were. With a sigh she took her trunk into the first bedroom, flopping down on her bed she pulled out a journal and began to write.
Dear Journal,
What am I going to do? I've been assigned some project where I have to live with Ron. I have problems concentrating when we are on the same floor of the castle, how on earth am I suppose to manage being in the same house? Honestly, my studies are going to suffer because now I can't even escape to the library! Oh Merlin here he comes, I'd better go. I just hope I can find a way to concentrate with the boy I love so close.
Hermione
