Author's Note:
This was my first song-fic ever and this is the shortest Harry Potter thing I have ever written. lol I have this "ritual" type thingy in which I have to do a song-fic for one song on every CD I have. At the time, I was obsessed with the All American Rejects... and I still slightly am. They so rock!

The Last Song

By: Lanni Weasley

Hermione Granger, Head Girl, was in her last month of her Seventh and final Year at Hogwarts. She'd just received a letter from her boyfriend--and it was gravely urgent. She walked past the Great Hall and outside of Hogwarts. She found who she was looking for outside, sitting by the lake. She slowed her pace by much. She caught her breath and let her cheeks turn to a normal colour. She found who she was looking for, but he was not looking happy at all.
"Harry?" Hermione asked. Harry Potter, Head Boy, looked over his shoulder to his girlfriend. When he saw her, she looked as beautiful as ever. He stood up as she walked close to him. "Harry, what is this about?" She showed him the letter, and Harry didn't know how to tell her.
~*This may be the last thing that I write for long. Can you hear me smiling when I sing this
song, for you and only you.*~
Harry chose his words carefully. "Hermione, I--I have to leave Hogwarts early," Harry stammered, trying his best not to let the tears escape his eyes. "Voldemort's been seen closer and... I don't want him to hurt you. It's time to fulfill the prophecy." Hermione didn't want to believe him. It had been more urgent than she'd thought. He was going to leave her and she didn't know if she was ever going to see him again--alive.
~*As I leave will you be someone to say good-bye? As I leave will you be someone to wipe your eyes?*~
"No, Harry... you can't... you just can't," Hermione whispered, letting the tears fall freely.
"Yes, Hermione, I am," Harry replied. He wiped the tear off of her cheek and kissed her. She grasped him tightly. "Hermione, I'm really sorry. I don't want to go either, but... Voldemort's getting closer and I don't want him to hurt you or Ron or anyone else I care about. He's hurt too many people I cared about. And he's not going to do it anymore."
"But Harry, what if you don't win?" Hermione sobbed, looking up in his face, wondering how he could keep the tears in.
"That's why I'm leaving," he muttered to himself. Then, he looked at Hermione. "You must believe in me. Good-bye, Hermione, I'll miss you." He began to walk away, leaving Hermione alone.
"Harry, wait; please don't leave me alone!" she cried out.
"I have to," Harry replied, not looking back. "Good-bye, Hermione, I love you." He opened the door to leave. Professor Dumbledore was waiting for him with a carriage.

Hermione ran to catch up with him, she couldn't lose him, not like everyone else--not like Ginny and Sirius and Mr. Weasley and Tonks and Kingsley and Bill and her mum. Everyone she cared so much about was leaving her--and now Harry was too. He'd promised her that he'd never leave her, and now he was.
~*My foot is out the door, and you can't stop me now.*~
"Harry, you have to believe me!" Hermione screamed outside as she watched the carriage pull away. "You have to believe me! It was all Malfoy! I did nothing! He said he loved me and tried to kiss me, but I pulled away! I love you; not Malfoy! Harry! Harry!!"
~*You wanted the best, it wasn't me. Will you take it back? Now I'll take the lead, when there's nothing to make it grow. I'll see you again, you pretend you're naïve. Is this what you want? Is this what you need? How you end up letting me know.*~
"Harry, please, you must believe me!" Hermione sobbed uselessly. She collapsed on the ground in a crying fit. "I can't believe in you if you won't believe in me. I love you, Harry. I really do." But Harry wa gone, and she was gone.
Harry sighed. It hadn't been as bad as he had expected--or had it? He'd walked in on Malfoy kissing Hermione, but she kept telling him that she didn't like him at all; she liked him. Part of him wished he could be by Hermione, calming her down and saying that he loved her too and that he believed her, but the other part wished Hermione would go to Hell for doing that to his heart.
~*As I go, remember all the simple things you know. My mind is just a crutch and I still hope that you will miss me when I'm gone. This is the last song.*~

~+~+~+~One Year Later~+~+~+~
Lord Voldemort had finally been defeated and the magical world and Muggle world were at peace once more. Harry Potter had defeated him and the War was finally over. He could finally rest, not on the edge of his seat, wondering where Voldemort was at now.

But not all of Harry was at rest. He hadn't seen his friends for one year--he hadn't seen Hermione for one year and he so longed to see her again. He walked through Diagon Alley, willing himself to believe that he would run into her again. He longed to see her face glow, her smile, her smell, and everything else about her.

And then, he heard it--he heard the laugh he'd memorized when he was dueling Voldemort to remind himself that there was still a reason to live and keep fighting: Hermione's laugh. He ran to where he heard it and then he saw her. He saw her glowing like a light surrounded her. She was at Flortescue's Ice Cream Shop. But as he got closer, he realized that she was not alone. She was with someone else. She was with... Ron.
~*The hearts start breaking as the year is gone. The dream's beginning and the time rolls on. It seems so surreal, now I sing it.*~
"Hermione..." Harry said breathlessly. Hermione turned her head in surprise to stare at her old boyfriend. The one that had broke her heart so ruthlessly--the one who had never gave her a chance with her truth--the one who had caused her so much pain and tortured her heart.

He'd told her before that letter that she'd torn his heart apart, cheating on him with Malfoy--when she wasn't at all. Had he ever stopped to think what he was doing to hers if she was telling the truth? No, he hadn't. Her heart had been torn into shreds.

Malfoy couldn't repair them, Seamus couldn't glue them back together, and her last boyfriend--she wouldn't mention him--had thrown the pieces in the fire. But there was someone who was able to mend her heart back together and she asked herself why she hadn't thought of it before. Ron had helped her cope with Harry's hateful dumping.

"Ron... what're you doing here?" Harry asked calmly.
"Hello, Harry," Hermione said, trying not to sound so cold, "Ron and I are on a date."

A date... He should've known. After he'd talked to Malfoy, he'd learned the truth about the 'Incident' and he felt so horrible. He should've realized that Ron was perfect to help her. He'd never seemed so sensitive, but he always had trouble judging a book by its cover. She'd fallen into his arms when he'd pushed her out of his.
~*Somehow I knew that it would be this way. Somehow I knew that I would slowly fade. Now I'm gone, just try and stop me now.*~
"Hey, Harry," Ron said, sounding happier to see him. "We haven't seen you in a while."
"I've really missed you guys during the last battle," Harry gasped.
"Yeah, we did too..." Ron sighed. Hermione turned her face away from him, and Harry understood her. He understood every little bit of hurt she felt, and he knew it was his entire fault.
"I guess I'll see you later, Ron," Harry muttered, turning away from his red-headed friend. "Have a good date, you two."
"I guess I'll see you later too, Harry," Ron called back as he saw Harry walk away slowly. "Thanks for everything." Yes, thanks for giving him Hermione. What the perfect leaving gift? Harry felt bitter with Ron--very bitter--but there was only one person he should be bitter with: himself.
Hermione looked at Ron. She
loves him so much. And then she looked at Harry walking away. She had loved him so much. When she thought he'd loved her back, he turned his back on her and walked away. She felt the tears sting her eyes again. She loved him once, but Ron was there now. And he hadn't done anything to harm her in the nine months they'd been together.
"I'm sorry, Harry, you just made it so impossible for me," Hermione whispered quietly. She looked at Ron and he made her smile. She loves him so much. She felt so much better just to be with Ron; and not to think about Harry.
~*And you will need me now, you'll find a way somehow. You want it, too. I want it, too. As I go, remember all the simple things you know. My mind is just a crutch and I still hope that you will miss me when I'm gone. This is the last song.*~
