Author's Note:
Yup, now it's this chapter that's been revised. And, I've come up with the conclusion that I'm going to add another chapter. So the last few chapters shall be changed around. It's going to be about N.E.W.T.s, which I left out, and the Quidditch Final, so we'll see how that goes.

Chapter Three
At Midnight

Krystyna rolled over in her bed. What time was it? She couldn't fall asleep. If she didn't drift off soon, she was going to be dragging along on her first day back in classes. She sighed and closed her eyes again, but even as hard as she tried, she couldn't fall asleep.

Huffing in frustration, Krystyna sat up in her four poster bed. The moon was shining through her curtains. She pulled them back and looked around. Lily had gone to bed early because she had an early meeting with James and Dumbledore about Head Boy and Girl duties. Krystyna grumbled; she missed talking to Lily at night already. Apparently, Lily would be going to bed earlier, but only time would tell if she lived up to her word.

Sara was next to Lily's bed, her light breathing heard. Lorena was the closest to the door, moving all over her bed in her sleep. Marissa was beside Krystyna, and Jessie was beside Sara; they were both sound asleep. Everyone was sound asleep, except Krystyna. She wasn't tired at all.

She sighed with frustration again and leaned over her bed. She quietly opened her trunk and found a small book. It was a Muggle novel that Lily had sent her for a birthday present during the summer; the book was fascinating.

Krystyna pulled back over her bed and looked back to the window; she knew that the moon would not shed enough light to read here. So, she slid one her dressing gown over her pyjamas and put some slippers on her feet. She got out of her bed, tip-toed to the door, and slid out of the dormitory without waking anyone up. The common room was empty. She smiled and collapsed in her favourite squishy chair. The fire was dormant, making her shiver from a cold chill. Even on a warm night like this, she found it cold. She pulled out her wand, which she brought with her just in case, and pointed it at the fireplace.

"Inflamare," Krystyna muttered, and the fire was brought back to life. She smiled again. She put the wand back in her robe pocket and opened the novel. After leafing through the pages, she stopped on the marked page. She found a comfortable position and began reading.

Reading made her sleepy; maybe she'd get tired enough to fall asleep. The only sound that was heard was that occasional crackling of the fire and Krystyna's light breathing. She hadn't noticed that someone else hadn't been able to get to sleep either.

"What're you reading?" someone asked quietly from behind Krystyna. She looked up to see Sirius Black standing over top of her behind the chair, his arms resting on the top of it. She looked back down at her book and remembered it was Muggle. For some unknown reason, she turned pink.

"Oh, just some Muggle novel," Krystyna muttered, shutting it quickly and setting it on the floor. The end of her wand poked her arm as she sat back up. Sirius moved from behind her seat to the chair next to her.

"Hm, you read those things?" he sighed.

"Yes, I do," Krystyna replied firmly. Then she realized that she'd said the wrong choice of words. She rolled her eyes to the Heavens, wondering if she was the only one who had caught it. She wanted to ask him what he was doing in the common room when she realized that he could turn around and ask her the same thing. Then, she asked herself why she was talking to him and remembered that she had nothing else to do because she couldn't sleep.

Curse my inability to sleep, Krystyna thought.

"Don't your parents get angry with you?" Sirius questioned, brining her out of her reverie.

Krystyna stared at him, remembered what was going on, and then nodded her head. "Of course, they get infuriated, but I really don't care what they think," she replied, her eyes wandering into the fire. It was something that she couldn't look him in the eyes.

"But don't you get punished?" Sirius interrogated. He stared at her, taking in her posture and expression. She had been sitting awkwardly on her legs before he'd interrupted her. Now she had her left leg crossed over her right, and she didn't look tired. She was wearing - what looked like - a sad expression.

"Of course, I get punished," Krystyna answered quietly. "It's nothing new. Don't you?"

"What?" Sirius asked, taken aback by her sudden question. He stared at her. "I don't get what you're saying."

Krystyna rolled her eyes. "Don't you get punished for hanging out with Potter?" she repeated. Sirius continued to stare at her. She sighed. "Listen; my parents hate the Potters just as much as yours. Remember when we were little and we'd have to sit at our fathers' business dinners, and they'd always talk about how the Potters were nothing but trouble and pureblood traitors? Don't you get punished for hanging out with him?"

"Also Remus," Sirius mumbled under his breath, thinking about his friend sleeping in the dormitory. She'd heard him though.

"What was that?" Krystyna asked. He snapped his attention to her. "Your parents don't like Remus either? Yeah, my parents don't either."

Sirius perked up. "Why not?" he asked.

"Well, he is a half-blood, isn't he?" She shook her head, appearing to be frustrated. For a second, he almost thought she said "half-breed", but she hadn't. He resisted the urge to shake his head; he was becoming paranoid. She continued: "They don't like me working side-by-side with him as a Prefect. Of course, they don't like a lot of things that I do."

There were those words again, not in the same way though.

"Like what?" Sirius questioned, fidgeting in his seat. This was the first real conversation he'd ever had with Krystyna. She was calm, and it sort of unnerved him a little. He finally realized why girls got so nervous when he talked to them--unnerving calm. But her being calm was slowly loosening him up. Every time he spoke to her, she'd get irritated, he'd get anxious, and things went sour. But not right now - not tonight - he felt like questioning his sanity.

"Like... hanging out with Lily - they don't like Lily at all because she's Muggle-born," Krystyna told him. "Reading Muggle novels, getting angry with them, being in Gryffindor, not liking Malfoy Malfoy-"

At this, Sirius snorted, interrupting her. Krystyna gawked at him.

"Sorry, sorry," he sniggered, waving his hand in the air dismissively, "that last one, it just... Your parents are mad that you don't like Malfoy?"

Krystyna grinned embarrassedly, blushing slightly.

"Er... yeah, they're determined to set me up with Malfoy whether I like it or not," she muttered embarrassedly. "They keep telling me that Malfoy is the perfect man: very smart, handsome, and Pure-blood. I keep telling them that they're making me hurl. He is such a stupid, selfish, arrogant arse! I can't stand him. And the way he treats Lily - argh! I really feel sorry for Lorena."

Sirius cocked his head a little. "Why is that?" he asked.

"Lorena has to spend at least one month at the Malfoy Manor every Holiday," Krystyna sighed. "It's bad enough that they don't get along, but Lorena's parents insist on her staying so she'll 'get the picture'. Bah, Lorena's never going to 'get the picture' if it's up to her."

Krystyna rolled her eyes and then remembered her summer. She sighed.

"Oh, that's terrible," Sirius mumbled, nodding his head slowly. He'd have to tell Remus that. Of course, Remus would deny that he even wanted to know anything about Lorena Fawcett in the first place...

Krystyna yawned; she suddenly realized that she was finally getting tired. Sirius yawned.

"Well, I better get back to going to bed," Krystyna sighed, standing up and stretching. She picked up her novel and turned around. She looked back at Sirius, who was stretching in the chair. "Nice talking to you, Sirius. Made me drowsy again."

Sirius stopped stretching and stared at her as she grinned. She turned back around to walk away, and that was when Sirius noticed her change in appearance. He stood up quickly.

"You've lost a lot of weight," he chirped with a slightly concerned voice. Sirius was always very observant. She accidentally dropped her book; it hit the ground. As if she felt defeated, she sighed and turned back around. Her dressing gown swayed a lot.

"Er, yes, I have," Krystyna mumbled. She felt as if she should mutter something about a "new diet", but it was a known fact that she laughed at the thought of going on one like some girls.

Sirius took a step towards her, but then stopped short, as if unsure of himself. "That's your punishment, huh?" he said quietly. "You lose meals."

"A small price to pay so I can be happy at school," Krystyna replied, shrugging it off. "It's because I keep hanging out with Lily. I don't care how many meals I get taken away; Lily is my best friend, and I won't rub her out of my life just so my parents will be happy."

"You've lost so much weight though," Sirius noted.

Again, Krystyna shrugged it off like it didn't matter.

"You did too," she whispered. She looked down at Sirius and noted that he'd gain some of it back on. She knew he'd run away from his parents' house and began living with James Potter. "Remus told me that you're staying with Potter. Must be nicer there than at the House of the Most Noble Blacks'."

"More like the House of the Evil, Stupid Blacks'," Sirius murmured spitefully.

"Anyways, I must be off to bed--" Krystyna went to turn around, but Sirius stopped her again by grabbing her by the elbow. She looked back at him quickly.

"Why don't you just live with Whitfield then?" Sirius asked her seriously. "They're good friends with the Potter family."

Krystyna smiled lightly. "You don't know how many times I've thought about doing that," she answered, "but I can't."

Sirius was confused. He stared into her eyes.

"Why not?" Sirius questioned. She stared back at Sirius and into his green eyes.

"Because I can't leave Andrew," Krystyna whispered. "He's in Gryffindor, too, and he's been getting on my parents' nerves lately. I have to be there...to take the punishment."

"That's brave," Sirius noted seriously. She smiled.

"Thank you," Krystyna sighed. He let go of her arm, and she started up the stairs to the girls' dormitory. "Good night."

"'Night," Sirius called. He wanted to call out a thank you to her; he'd never talked about his family before - all the lost meals - and difficulties. It was nice to actually have someone to talk to. But he didn't, and she disappeared into the girls' seventh year dormitory.

Sirius grinned, admiring his accomplishment of talking to Krystyna Melanie without stammering or blushing - too much. Anyways, after this year, things would get better for her. He started for the stairs when his foot hit something. He looked down and recognized it as the Muggle book Krystyna had dropped on the ground. Seeing that he was now the only one in the common room, he bent down and picked it up. He looked at the title.

"Number the Stars," Sirius muttered to himself as he stared at the book. He turned to the first page and let his eyes scan it. He cocked his head a little after he'd finished skimming the first three pages and closed the book softly. He couldn't go in the girls' dormitory to return it back to Krystyna, so he'd give it to her when he saw her at breakfast.

He walked up to the boys' seventh year dormitory and walked inside. He laid the book face down on his post and crawled back into bed. Soon enough, Sirius had fallen asleep and began to saunter off into a dream.

~*~

"Congratulations, Padfoot!" James exclaimed, patting his best friend on the back. It was breakfast time in the Great Hall the next morning, and Sirius had just told them that he'd talk to Krystyna last night. "You've finally scored one for Melanie!"

While James hammed it up, Sirius stopped himself from turning pink.

"What did you two talk about?" Peter asked.

It hadn't been the best topic in the world. They'd talked about their parents and punishment. Not the way to score for a girl, really.

"Er..." Sirius should've talked about her, given her compliments and all - flirted, for goodness' sake - but he hadn't. Being so late, he had been focused on trying to get sleepy and sitting by the fire always made him tired. It had never occurred to him that Krystyna might be in the Common Room reading so he hadn't been really prepared. It had just sort of...formed like regular conversations with friends did. "We talked about our summer holidays."

It was a half truth and a whole lie. They'd talked about their summer, sure, but not exactly. They had talked about Krystyna's loss of weight over summer. That counted, right?

"Ah, just a light conversation," Peter sighed nonchalantly. He stuffed a biscuit in his mouth.

A light conversation, indeed, Sirius thought spitefully.

If Peter only knew what they had talked about...he wouldn't think it light then. But should he tell them what their not-so-light-or-happy conversation had been about?

"Right..." Sirius muttered, taking a drink of his orange juice.

"What did she say, Padfoot?" Remus asked, leaning in. "We talked about it on our way back to the train station near Hogsmeade and all she said was that hers was pleasant. I think she's hiding something."

It was anything but pleasant, Sirius thought bitterly. More like prison and torture. I'm surprised she said that to you. It must've been later than I thought. She let something serious slip out to me and hasn't even said anything about it to Remus. And by the looks of it, she hasn't said anything to Evans, Fawcett, or Whitfield. I feel special...in a strange sort of grieving way. I wonder why she doesn't say anything. I told my friends about my problems with my parents.

"Er..." Sirius knew he shouldn't stammer. It was very unlike him to stammer when he was with friends; well, it was very unlike him to stammer at all. He felt the sweat beading on his forehead.

Sirius thought about how Krystyna looked when he'd made his observant notice. She had looked...defeated, like she hadn't wanted anyone to know. But how could he not know? He'd noticed the same thing when she had come back for her Second Year. Her robes were too large for her, but at the age of twelve, he just thought that Madam Malkins had made a mistake.

Now that he thought about it, no one had probably asked yet, up until him. He wanted to tell someone because he knew she wouldn't mention it unless anyone else mentioned it. She shrugged it off like it didn't matter, but it was a very serious matter to him. He wondered if he should tell anyone, he was itching to get it off his chest because it was serious to him. He thought about telling Remus because Remus was obviously already close to her. Had he already noticed, too, but just too shy to ask? He wondered if he should say anything in front of James and Peter.

Lily, Lorena, and Sara were bright girls. They had to have noticed. Judging by the way Lorena eyed Krystyna while she ate, Sirius figured that Lorena had already confronted Krystyna about it. Lorena was a very confrontational girl.

"C'mon, Padfoot; spit it out," James chortled. He chewed on some scrambled eggs while staring at Sirius. He looked awfully nervous. James frowned and sat his fork down. "Sirius, was it something more severe?"

Well, at least someone can figure that out, Sirius thought.

"Well, um, yes, it's more severe," Sirius finally muttered. James glanced at Remus, who set his goblet down. Peter swallowed hard on his biscuit and gulped his milk while staring at Sirius.

"Wow, she talked about something serious to you and not Remus," James sighed. "Looks like she's been lying to you about her summer, Moony."

Remus took on a sort of horrified expression.

"You don't think she found out, do you?" he whispered worriedly. "You don't think she know that I'm a... do you? Maybe she doesn't trust me anymore, James. Maybe she can't trust me because she found out."

Before James could reply, Sirius shook his head. "No, no, it's not that," he mumbled. "It was really late and..."

"And?" Peter demanded.

"And the conversation just sort of formed," Sirius answered, starting to feel relieved. "I just made an observant gesture and our conversation went into more serious topics and before she left, I made another observant notice and it got more serious."

They were all silent for a moment. Sirius stared at his plate. Suddenly, he didn't feel so hungry. Just looking at the food he was about to eat made him feel sick; instead, he pushed the plate away and took another long sip of orange juice.

"What was it about?" Peter pushed. Sirius was really getting annoyed by now. Peter just kept prying for more information when he didn't want to say anything to him. He almost felt like wringing his neck, but instead, he clenched the table cloth, realizing that none of them, even James, was used to Sirius keeping something to himself.

"Sirius, we know you want to tell someone," James said observantly.

"So tell us," Remus added. Now that James and Remus asked, Sirius felt better. He didn't know why, but he sure felt a heck of a lot better. "What happened last night?"

Sirius took a deep breath.

"I couldn't sleep, so I went down to the Common Room to sit by the fire and just day dream about anything, but when I got down there, Krystyna was sitting in my usual chair, reading a book. I asked what she was reading and she said a Muggle book. I sat down and... And asked if she got punished for reading a Muggle book and she said yes." His stomach was churning, but he ignored it.

"You talked about punishment?" Peter asked, wide-eyed. He dropped his second biscuit.

"Well, I just wondered if her parents still acted like mine or not..." Sirius murmured. "She hasn't been to my old house with her father for business dinners with my father - and vice versa - for about...four years now, not since we were thirteen. Since we really acted the same and opposed our parents' ideas, they thought that we'd corrupt each other even further. I've already run away to live with James, but Krystyna still lives with her parents... I just wondered if they still treated her like they use to..."

"And they do," James muttered angrily. It was a known fact that his parents were pureblood, but liked the idea of James mingling with Muggle-borns and Half-bloods. "Why doesn't she just live with Whitfield? Her parents are friends with mine? They're pureblood and have the said ideals as my family."

"I asked her about that, James, but she just said she couldn't because of Andrew, her younger brother," Sirius sighed. "He's starting to act like her, and she says that she's got to stay there to take his punishment."

James huffed.

"What's...what's her punishment?" Remus questioned quietly.

Sirius scowled at the thought of punishment. "Same as mine was," he snarled madly. James shook his head.

"What's that, Padfoot?" Peter asked. Shouldn't he have known that already? Perhaps, but maybe he had forgotten since Sirius had run away to live with James last year. There, it hadn't occurred at all. It was quite the opposite, actually. Instead of losing meals, he had gained more.

"She gets meals taken away," Sirius growled. James grunted angrily and took a sip of his milk. Remus leaned back in his seat, shaking his head. Peter looked down at his plate full of food, sighed, and dropped the piece of bacon. "She's lost a lot of weight, Remus. I'm not sure how much."

Remus choked on his drink and sat it down quickly, apple juice sloshing around.

"What?" he choked out.

"Only God knows how much she's lost since she started Hogwarts," Sirius sighed grimly.

"But...why is she getting punished like that?" Peter asked in a very high-pitched voice. "It can't be just because she doesn't like her parents' ideals, can it?"

Sirius shook his head. "No, it's mainly because she continues to hang out with Evans," he explained.

At this, James perked up and whipped his head in Sirius's direction.

"It's because she's friends with Lily?" James questioned quickly. Sirius nodded his head and James scowled madly. "It's because she's a Muggle-born witch. Out of all the nasty things those old gits do, the worst is that - punishing Melanie because she's friends with a Muggle-born witch. That's exactly like your old family of yours was, Sirius - punishing you because you were friends with me."

"They aren't my family," Sirius mumbled.

"Yeah, they aren't your family at all," James muttered spitefully. "She's losing meals just because she's friends with Lily! Screw those damn gits."

James scowled again and jabbed his knife in his ham. Peter flinched. James was not one to act like this unless it was for Snape or Malfoy.

"Well, that's something that Evans, Fawcett, and Whitfield don't know," Remus sighed.

"Why is that?" Sirius asked. "They have to have noticed this by now! They're not stupid."

"Well, no, but I doubt that they know it's at her parents' hands. I'm sure Evans would feel really guilty and try to coax Krystyna into not hanging out with her," Remus explained. "And I'm sure Krystyna would say no since she hasn't split yet so Evans would probably stop hanging out with her. She's like that, really nice. I'm also sure that we would've heard something from Fawcett by now."

But this is a private matter, Sirius thought. And she can't do much but complain.

Sirius sighed.

Peter nodded his head. "She's very loud when she's mad," he whispered.

"You have no idea, Wormtail," James noted, chuckling on the memory when they were on the Hogwarts Express. It was a memory he'd never forget.

They all laughed, trying to forget what they had just been talking about. First day of school and they were already talking about sad and awful things. What were they thinking?

James thought up of another topic. "Quidditch season is will be in play soon; I'm setting up Keeper tryouts this Friday," he said. He turned to Peter, grinning ear-to-ear. "Hey, Wormtail, are you going to try out for keeper?"

They all laughed loudly as Peter sunk in his seat.

"No thanks, Prongs," he murmured. "I'm afraid of heights-"

"Try telling that to a Boggart!" Remus grinned.

"And those bludgers!" Sirius chortled. Peter turned red. "Hey, that's the reason I don't play Quidditch. Bludgers hurt real badly. Can't afford to ruin my handsome face, now can I? I got hit with one when James accidentally let them out, remember that?" He nudged James, and they all laughed. "I still have a mark from that incident."

They laughed once more.

"Well, well, well, look what the griffin brought in," a cold voice drawled from behind Sirius and James. Remus and Peter looked up while James and Sirius whipped around in their seats. Lucius Malfoy was standing behind them with his arms folded, leering at them. Sirius stood up; they were matching in height. Malfoy must've grown an inch or two over the summer.

"Sod off, Malfoy," Sirius growled madly. "You've no right to be standing here."

"What're you gonna do, Black?" Malfoy snarled. "You can't hex me in front of Dumbledore, the professors, and everyone."

"Who says I can't? I can just tell them it was self-defence; you were getting ready to hex me. You do have your wand in your hand in your pocket," Sirius gnarled. They glared at each other. Sirius looked pass him and saw that Krystyna was looking at them both, eyebrows raised. "Just sod off, Malfoy."

"Why should I?" Malfoy sighed, relaxing. His eyes flickered over to Krystyna, Lily, and Sara. Lorena walked passed Sirius and Malfoy, her eyes locked on Malfoy warningly. Malfoy cringed and looked back at Sirius. "I kind of like it over here in this...Mudblood atmosphere."

At this remark, James jumped to his feet angrily. Malfoy was lucky enough that Lorena hadn't heard him and was already out of the Great Hall to see James jolt to his feet in a rush.

"Shut up, Malfoy!" James muttered angrily. His eyes scanned the place. Remus stood up while Peter sunk lower in his seat.

"James, Sirius, let it go," Remus said cautiously. "Professor Dumbledore and other people are staring. We don't want another scene."

James and Sirius continued to glare at Malfoy.

"Listen to your little Prefect buddy, you two," Malfoy chuckled.

Remus rolled his eyes. "James, Sirius, let it go," he said forcefully. "This prat's not worth detention on our first day back."

Malfoy looked a tad bit disgruntled at Remus's statement.

Lily and Sara had gotten up from their seats. They talked to Krystyna for a second, but she ushered them off. Sara shrugged her shoulders and they began to walk away. Krystyna called to them to tell that she'd meet them in Transfiguration. They waved. Krystyna was now sitting alone and drinking the rest of her drink alone. She looked tired. James watched Lily walk out of the Great Hall.

"Alright, let's leave Malfoy alone," James mumbled, "for now." He grinned and sat back down.

"Go back to into the hole you crawled out of, Malfoy," Sirius said before sitting back down. Malfoy shook his head and sauntered off. "I wonder why he was over here."

Remus looked up and then took a deep breath. He looked back down and shook his head. "I think I know why," he muttered.

"What-?" Sirius looked up and saw Malfoy sitting down in Lily's empty seat next to Krystyna. He turned red and went to stand up, but James pushed him back down in his seat.

"Calm down, Padfoot," James cautioned. "What's he gonna do to her? Kiss her? I doubt she'll be happy with that. She can barely stand looking at him."

"And even that, I don't know how she does it," Sirius growled angrily. Peter had sat back in his seat correctly and took a drink.

The four boys stared at Malfoy talking to Krystyna. She didn't look too pleased to see him sitting next to her. He was grinning largely, but she looked mad that he was sitting by her. He kept talking and she had her lips pursed. Then, Malfoy leaned in closely, probably to kiss her, and put his hand on Krystyna's cheek. Suddenly, she threw her orange juice all over him and stood up quickly. He was covered with orange juice.

"Don't you ever touch me again, Malfoy!" Krystyna shrieked, appalled. Everyone in the entire Great Hall was staring at Krystyna and Malfoy. He looked surprised that she'd done that, orange juice dripping off of his face. "And don't ever try to kiss me!"

She grabbed her bag and stalked away very briskly. She walked past Sirius and them without even making eye contact and ran out of the Great Hall. Everyone went from looking at Krystyna and back to Malfoy. Even the staff members were. He licked the orange juice off his lips while everyone continued to stare at him. He stood up and walked out of the Great Hall.

"See, I told you he couldn't do anything to her," James sighed, grinning happily. "What a waste of orange juice though. Ah, oh well, he'll be sticky all afternoon. He can use the Scourgify Charm, but he'll still be sticky."

Sirius went to stand up and follow him out, just in case, but James pushed him back down in his seat again. Sirius glanced at him. "James, what if he-?"

"Padfoot, Malfoy won't go after her right now because she's fuming," James told him calmly. "You don't want to get on her bad side when she's fuming. Malfoy of all people should know that." Sirius thought about it and then nodded his head, still feeling uneasy. He glanced at the doors again. "Now, my day seems to be starting out well. Malfoy gets drenched in orange juice by Melanie and dissed in ten seconds top at breakfast. Who knows what's going to happen the rest of the day."

After laughing, they stood up and walked out of the Great Hall for their first class of the year: Transfiguration with Ravenclaws.

Author notes: Yeah, this is better, even though I changed only a bit.
Thanks for reading!
