As Harry's mind continued to fly through the "what ifs" his feet were flying closer to Draco. When he finally made it to the edge of the lake he was out of breath and sweating profusely. As he skidded to a halt, what he saw before him took his breath away.
The moonlight reflecting on the lake was playing off Draco's silvery platinum hair making him look angelic. As Harry stared deep into Draco's eyes he was surprised at what he saw. His eyes reflected pain, suffering, and torment. He was not hiding his emotions as well as he normally did. In his fist was clenched a tear stained letter.
"What are you doing here Potter?" asked Draco in a cold tone. Was it just Harry's imagination or did his voice lack the bitter
harshness he usually had when he spoke to Harry.
"I...I..I," Harry stammered.
"I've been watching you Potter, and I know that you have been watching me."
What unearth was Malfoy getting at?
"W-W-What?" Harry asked.
"Potter I come from a family that prides itself on being able to read everyone, and I can read you like a book, and I'm just telling you now, it would never work," answered Draco.
"What would never work Malfoy?"
"Don't play stupid with me Harry, I know I'm right, I know you like me, and I know that it would never work."
Harry couldn't believe his ears, he didn't know what to say, Draco already knew that he liked him, and he just said that a relationship between them would never work. AND...on top of that Draco had just called him Harry and not Potter. Harry had to say something, he couldn't just stand there with his mouth hanging open forever.
"Ah...um Draco?"
Malfoy looked up at Harry. "What?" he asked quietly, almost in a whisper.
"Why wouldn't it work?" Harry asked sheepishly.
"Ha Ha, why wouldn't it work? Potter I thought you were smarter! Just think Harry Potter Golden Boy and Draco Malfoy the Prince of Darkness. What would everyone say, they would be crushed, you wouldn't be perfect Harry anymore, and you know Voldemort would kill my whole family if we were together. Plus the world just isn't ready, they need their big golden hero, and their sexy blonde villain."
"Draco since when have you cared about what they think?" asked Harry who was confused, sad, and more then just a little bit
angry all at the same time.
"God, potter just leave me alone, I don't want to talk to you, just get that through your thick head," he shouted back.
"Fine," Harry whispered, he was trying his hardest to hold himself together. I mean what was he expecting from Malfoy 'Oh Harry I need you I want you oh baby, oh baby.' So Harry hung his head in defeat and stumbled back to the castle to go cry himself to sleep.
As Draco watched Harry make his way back he felt his heart splitting in two. "I'm so sorry," he choked out but Harry never heard him because he was already gone and even if he had been there the wind had stolen Draco's quietly spoken words. He fell to the ground and began to weep as he had never wept before. This was going to be harder then he thought it was. He would see Harry everyday, walk by him in the halls, maybe even sit near him in class, he would be so close but so painfully far away. His eyes drifted back to the letter.
As he told Harry before, his family was good at reading people, and his father had read him like a book. He saw Draco's feelings for Harry shining in his eyes. So what does a Malfoy do when they know something about someone that should be kept a secret, why they blackmail of course. His own father was blackmailing him.
Draco's feelings for Harry could ruin Lucius's plans for becoming the Dark Lord's second in command, so he blackmailed his own son. His father promised to kill Harry himself if Draco ever acted on his feelings. So Draco had to continue acting like he hated Potter and wanted nothing to do with him. And it was killing him. Draco wasn't weak he could take pain, but this was a pain worse then pain. There was no healing it, no dulling it, it followed him everywhere. It pulled his heart, he hated being weak, and he hated not being able to touch Harry, to caress Harry, to love Harry. But he could do nothing.
(Next morning at breakfast)
Harry felt miserable after what had happened with Draco and hadn't slept all night. He was trying to forget what had happened but his friends certainly didn't seem to be helping.
"Harry, are you ok? You look a little out of sorts today. Did you not sleep well?" asked Hermoine in her natural motherly tone.
"Yeah, fine, I'm just fine," replied Harry quietly.
"Hey Harry, so have you decided yet?" asked Ron.
"Decided what?"
"Harry don't you remember? My little sister asked you if you wanted to go to Hogsmade with her today. Well you jolly well know you can't say no, or I'd beat you to a bloody pulp so just go tell her you'll go already!"
"Ok" said Harry submissively.
"Look there she is now! Go on and talk to her."
Harry did as he was told and sleepily walked over to where Ginny was standing and talking with her friends.
"Hey Ginny, um so about today, yeah I'd love to go with you to Hogsmade, um I guess I'll pick you up around 11:30, that way we can get some lunch," said Harry a bit unenthusiastically.
"OH MY GOD!!! THAT WOULD BE GREAT, I CAN'T WAIT!!" screeched Ginny. She took a breath and seemed to calm down a little "I'll meet you in the common room at 11:30," and with that she ran off with her group of friends giggling.
"Girls," muttered Harry to himself.
