Friends with Lily Evans by Kizzibee

"Slimy haired git," growled sixth year student, Sirius Black under his breath. He had been forced to partner Severus Snape in his potions class. Severus Snape was a member of Slytherin house at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and was much hated by Sirius Black. Sirius had hoped to be partnered with his best friend, James Potter, but James was partnering another friend, Remus Lupin, while Peter Pettigrew was partnering a pretty but snobbish Slytherin girl called Narcissa Blue. Professor Rookwood, Potions master and head of Slytherin house, had forced Sirius to partner Severus out of spite.

"Professor Rookwood, sir!" cried Severus, grinning maliciously. "Black just insulted me, sir!" Sirius glared at him.

"Ten points from Gryffindor House, Mr Black," said Rookwood smoothly.

"What?" cried Sirius, angrily, but James, who was sitting next to him, kicked him under the table. "Don't push it," he said, quietly.

Severus Snape was clearly enjoying getting Sirius into trouble.

"You forgot to add the banshee hairs, Black," he said smoothly.

"No, I didn't! You said to add them after the cricket hairs! You were supposed to be reading the instructions!" snapped Sirius angrily.

"I believe I gave the correct instructions, and you weren't listening," smirked Snape.

"Yes, I was! You gave the wrong instructions on purpose!" Sirius was now red in the face.

"What's going on here?" asked Professor Rookwood, gliding over to their cauldron.

"Snape gave me the wrong instructions, and the potion's turned red instead of purple," complained Sirius.

"In other words, you were not paying attention, Black," said Rookwood, his eyes narrowed.

"I was so!" Sirius shouted. "He gave the wrong instructions on purpose!" he pointed at Snape.

"Mr Snape is the best student in this class. He pays attention and does not make mistakes or cause trouble. Lets see...ten points to Slytherin to make up for Black's mess of Severus' work and ten points from Gryffindor. Detention also for Mr Black for not paying attention and causing extra unnecessary work." Rookwood walked back to the front of the class, leaving Sirius shaking with rage.

Sirius returned to the Gryffindor common room from the dungeons later that night, still furious. Rookwood had made him clean all the boys' toilets with a toothbrush, Muggle style. He was ready to complain to his friends, but holding their noses in disgust, they ordered him to have a shower first.

"I hate that Snape!" he cried savagely, coming out of the shower, still wet, with a towel wrapped around his waist. Some of the Gryffindor girls practically drooled over his muscular body. James rolled his eyes at Remus. Sirius threw himself into an armchair in the Gryffindor tower common room, still complaining.

"We all hate Snape, but you shouldn't let him provoke you," said Remus calmly

"Provoke me! You try partnering him!" snapped Sirius.

"Snape's definitely gone too far this time," agreed James grimly. "That's a hundred points we've lost from Gryffindor this year thanks to him provoking us and Rookwood believing him all the time."

"I still think we should just ignore him," responded Remus

"But he'll only find another way to lose us points!" piped up Peter Pettigrew. "None of the other Gryffindors are talking to us, what with all the points we've lost."

"What we need..." said James slowly. "Is a method of revenge, where no-one will suspect it is us."

Sirius brightened up. "So...what are you suggesting?"

"I'm suggesting...and this involves the Marauders Map...and my cloak..."

"We won't all fit under it," Remus pointed out.

"You're such a spoilsport! Where's your sense of fun?" snapped Sirius

"I want to see Snape get his comeuppance as much as you do Sirius, but I'm being realistic. We WON'T all fit under the cloak."

"Remus is right. We'll just take the Marauder's map, and try to dodge anyone who comes near us," said James.

"So what's the plan?" asked Peter.

"I think..." and James looked at Sirius, "we should sneak into the Slytherin common room."

"We don't know the password," interrupted Remus

"REMUS!" cried James and Sirius.

"Okay...I'll shut up!" grinned Remus

"As for the password..." James continued. "The map will tell us what the password is. Once we get in, we head for the Slytherin boys' bathroom. We replace their shampoo with...um..."

"Lavender?" suggested Sirius

"Yeah...lavender. Make them all sweet smelling. Snape sure does need it. They all do."

"Okay...when?" asked Peter.

"No time like the present," replied Remus, standing up. His sense of fun had apparently returned.

"Okay. Accio map!" cried James. With the marauder's map now in his hands, he stood up also. "Not that there's much chance of being caught in the middle of the night."

So they set off, walking quietly out of the portrait hole, ignoring the scolds of the Fat Lady, and walked quietly down staircases and corridors on their way to the dungeons. Once they had to slip into an empty classroom, when the map showed the bad-tempered caretaker, Filch, coming their way as he patrolled the corridors.

Finally, they reached what they knew to be the Slytherin common room. They were standing by a statue of a mean-looking wizard. They glanced down at the Marauder's map. A tiny speech bubble next to the dot labelled "James Potter" said "Wideous".

"Wideous!" James whispered, and the stone statue moved aside, revealing the entrance to the Slytherin common room.

Sirius stepped inside first. Once they were all inside, they looked around, inspecting their enemies' common room. It was empty, very bare, and dimly lit. There were no windows. Black leather sofas were placed around the fire and there were also a few tables and chairs, obviously for studying. There were no pictures on the walls and it was extremely cold looking.

"I don't like it here," whispered Peter, nervously.

"Don't worry," said Remus, reassuringly; "we won't be staying long."

They started walking up one of the staircases leading off the common room, not sure whether it would take them to the boys or girls' dormitories. They stopped outside a door with a sign marked 'bathroom' and stepped inside. One look informed them that they were in the girls' bathroom.

"Let's go spy on the girls!" grinned Sirius, rubbing his hands together gleefully.

"NO, Sirius. They might wake up," said James, "let's just go find the boys' bathroom."

So back to the common room they went and ascended the other staircase. This time, they opened the door of the boys' bathroom.

"Uuuurrrrggh!" cried Sirius, picking up a bottle of aftershave and holding it under his nose. "This is why they smell so bad!"

"Give it here," ordered James. "And shut up, will you?" He took the bottle of aftershave from Sirius and poured it down the sink. Taking another bottle out of his pocket, he poured its contents into the now-empty bottle of aftershave. "There! Lavender!" He and Sirius grinned wickedly.

"I have an idea," said Remus, and with a flick of his wand, he turned all the Slytherin boys' towels from green to bright pink. "Great, Remus!" cried Sirius

"Shuuuuush!" whispered Peter, who looked more and more nervous the longer they spent here.

James replaced the contents of the boys' deodorants with lavender oil also, while Sirius emptied out shampoo bottles and replaced them with rose smelling shampoo. Once finished, they stood back to admire their handiwork.

"Oh, I can't wait to see their faces!" crowed Sirius.

"We'd better go, quick!" whispered Peter. The others nodded in agreement and left the common room, Sirius still muttering gleefully. They stepped out of the entrance hole and watched the stone statue slide back in place.

"JAMES!" cried a voice, and they all spun round.

Their fellow Gryffindor sixth year, and a prefect, Lily Evans was standing at the other side of the corridor, glaring at them. "What do you think you're doing, out of the common room?" she spoke, advancing towards them. "Next to the Slytherin house entrance?"

"We...wanted to...do some late night studying. And...we got lost!" said Remus, thinking quickly.

"Oh really?" said Lily, eyebrows raised. "A likely story! I know you four are always up to something. Got some trick planned? I expected better of you, James, being a fellow prefect. I told Professor McGonagall she was making a mistake, making you a prefect!"

"Shut up, you snobby cow!" snapped Sirius. "James is a good prefect!"

"Funny way of showing it, hasn't he? Roaming the corridors at night, up to no good! That's another ten points you've lost from Gryffindor! Yes! From another prefect! I shall be speaking to Professor McGonagall about you four!" With that, Lily marched away.

Sirius muttered very colourful language under his breath.

"Don't. Lily's usually okay," said James. "And we shouldn't have been sneaking out."

"It was your idea! Now we've lost more points!" snapped Remus

"Let's get back to our dormitory," said Peter; before a fight could break out, for the other three were looking daggers at each other. Murmuring agreement, they headed back to their dormitory.

The next day, however, cheered them up, for each lesson with the Slytherins was full of the scents of lavender and rose. Severus Snape was furious that someone had tampered with their bathroom toiletries and kept sending the four Gryffindors dirty looks, obviously suspecting them, but he could not prove it. He had to endure much taunting from his Gryffindor classmates about his new smell. Lily Evans had reported them to Professor McGonagall but fortunately; however, McGonagall did not seem to think that they had actually been inside Slytherin tower. But she did give them a long lecture on being an example to other students and not being out of bed at nighttimes. She gave them all detention helping the Hogwarts gamekeeper Hagrid in the Forbidden Forest. "This is NOT an opportunity to enjoy yourselves!" she snapped. "You will be doing some work, and any misbehaving will lead to expulsion!"

They arrived at Hagrid's cabin later that night and knocked. Hagrid opened the door. "Yeh four again," he grinned down at them. "Almost got yeh all living wi' me. See yeh's tha' often. Alrigh', c'mon then!"

"Where are we going, Hagrid?" asked Sirius, as they ran to keep up with him.

"Forbidden forest. Yeh know tha'," said Hagrid.

"Yes, but why?" James corrected Sirius.

"Vampires," replied Hagrid.

The four boys stopped, looking terrified, even the usually brave Sirius Black.

"V...vam...vampires?" whimpered Peter

"Yeah, got loads o' 'em. Gotta cut their numbers, see? Tae keep 'em under control. But there no' easy to handle, tha's why I brought yeh lot WI me. Whassa matter? Thought yeh were a brave bunch," he smirked at them. They were shaking, not feeling very brave at all.

Hagrid patted James in the back, sending him sinking a few inches into the ground. "It's alrigh'. Got lotsa stakes here," he handed each boy a stake. "An' I got some crosses too," he handed them some stakes.

"Alrigh'? Lets go then." And he marched into the forest, the four boys following them. It got darker and darker the further they went into the forest.

"Shush!" whispered Hagrid, throwing out an arm and catching Sirius in the chest, knocking the wind out of him. "Yeah, tha's one coming." They all hid behind a tree, peeking out as the male vampire came nearer, fangs bared, seemingly sniffing the air around him. With a roar, Hagrid jumped out from behind his tree and jumped on top of the vampire, which, taken by surprise, did not have time to get out of the way. In one quick motion, Hagrid had staked the vampire and it disappeared in a puff of smoke.

"Righ' then. Tha's one outta the way," said Hagrid, straightening himself up. "Ah!" he cursed loudly as he remembered something. "Ah forgot the holy water! Ah'd better get back an' get some, can' be too careful, yeh know? Best get more supplies. Yeh'll be alrigh' boys. Ah'll no' be long." And off he went. The four boys were left looking at each other nervously.

"Hagrid makes it look really easy. But if a vampire comes near me...!" whispered Sirius, after several minutes of silence.

"I know. I'll be dead for sure," whimpered cowardly Peter.

"How are you getting on?" said a new voice, making them all jump.

"Lily!" cried James; "you nearly made us wet ourselves!"

"Believe me, James, I really don't want to be here."

"Neither do we. Least of all with you," snapped Sirius.

"Hagrid sent me to make sure you were alright," said Lily, ignoring Sirius. "He's been held up. And will you lot stop staring at me like that?"

"Lily...go!" cried James, his eyes fixed behind her.

"I told you, I have to keep an eye...AHHHHHH!" she screamed

A vampire had crept up behind her, had grabbed her head, pulling it sideways, and was now preparing to bite into her exposed neck.

"You guys go!" yelled Remus, stepping forward. "Quick! Get help!"

"No!" yelled James, "we're not leaving you both here!"

"I said NO!" yelled Remus. And with extraordinary strength for a seventeen-year-old boy, he had grabbed the vampire and thrown it away from Lily, who slumped to the ground, uninjured but trembling with fear. The vampire advanced on him instead, and he started punching it while the vampire dug its fangs into any part of exposed flesh it could find.

"REMUS!" yelled Sirius

Remus was gasping with pain, but still trying to fight off the vampire, keeping it away from Lily and the other boys.

"Oh my god!" whispered Lily, from her spot on the ground.

"Peter, get Hagrid!" yelled James. Peter quickly spun around and sped off in the direction of Hagrid's cabin. As soon as he left, James and Sirius transformed themselves into a beautiful white stag and an enormous black shaggy haired dog.

"What...?" whispered Lily, totally confused, wondering if she had hurt her head. The stag and the dog had now joined the fight and were attacking the vampire too. Snarling, the vampire backed off, unable to fight three attackers.

Once it had left, James and Sirius transformed back into themselves. They were both naked, their clothes having been ripped as they transformed into animals. Lily tried her best not to look below their waists (which was hard, as they were quite well endowed) as she shakily stood up.

"Are you...are you okay?" she asked Remus, not wanting to go near.

"Yeah, I'm fine."

"But...it bit you! You could be...a vampire too! And how...how did you two do that?"

"Going to tell on us are you?" asked Sirius, scathingly, picking up his torn robes and putting them back on.

"No..." whispered Lily. "You guys just saved my life."

"You guys should have left," said Remus, rubbing his wounds and grimacing.

"Like hell. We wouldn't leave you there with that beast," said James.

"But I was fine, don't you know...?"

"Yes, we do know," cut in Sirius. "We know the only thing that can kill a werewolf is silver, not a vampire or anything else."

"You're...you're...a WEREWOLF?" gasped Lily.

The others had forgotten she was there. They jumped. Remus turned to her. "Yes." He sighed. "Yes, I am."

"That's why...you were always in the hospital wing?" Remus nodded.

"And you guys..." Lily gestured to James and Sirius.

"Yeah, we're animagi. We can't keep Remus company in human form while he's a werewolf, but a werewolf can't harm other animals," said Sirius. "We're not licensed, in case you hadn't guessed, so don't go telling on us."

"I won't...wow..." replied Lily, wide-eyed.

Thunderous footsteps told them that Hagrid and Peter were approaching. Hagrid soon appeared. "Look at yeh!" he cried and lifted Remus up easily in his arms.

"I'm alright, Hagrid, really." Said Remus, struggling in Hagrid's arms and blushing furiously. The other boys grinned at each other.

"No yeh're not! Yeh're going tae the hospital wing! Get yersel' all fixed up." Hagrid started carrying a protesting Remus up to the castle. He headed towards the hospital wing, leaving the other boys and Lily to walk up to the Gryffindor tower. Once inside the common room, they looked at each other, embarrassed.

Finally, Lily spoke. "Thanks," she whispered, before hurrying up to her dormitory.

From that day on, Lily Evans became their friend (and in one case, future wife). For there are few things you can't share without becoming friends and fighting a vicious vampire is one of them.
