Chapter Three: The "Incident"

Hermione ran to the Gryffindor common room, told the members of S.P.E.W. that the meeting was off, then headed towards the library. She had remembered Malfoy telling them that they were going to go to the library so that's where she went. Sure enough, Harry and Ron were sitting library leaning over Quidditch Through the Ages by Kennilworthy Whisp. Hermione sat next to them.

"You know, Ron, the spell Surexcité doesn't have a memory charm connected with it, so I know everything that happened."

"Okay, so now can you tell us? We both don't know what happened after Malfoy came in," Ron said.

"Well, Malfoy came in, he wanted to join S.P.E.W., asked you guys what was wrong with me, I made a fool of myself, he was worried about me, you guys said he liked me, I blacked out, I was normal again, I got mad at him, and I left," Hermione said quickly.

"Ah, I see. How come I always miss the good stuff?" Ron asked.

"That fault is yours, not mine," Hermione told him.

"So, does he like you?" Harry asked quietly.

"Why do you care? Mind you, he told me nothing," Hermione, said with a bit of an attitude.

"Okay, okay! Settle down! What's with the attitude?" Ron yelled.

"What attitude? I was just saying it's none of his business!" Hermione yelled back as she stood up. "I'm leaving," she said going out the library door.

"What's with her?" Ron asked Harry who was watching Hermione carefully as she walked away.

Hermione didn't know what to think about everything going on. Malfoy is cute, she thought, and it is really flattering that he stares at me.

Hermione walked up to the Gryffindor common room looking at the ground, with these sorts of thoughts floating through her head.

She put her things away in her dormitory then decided to go on a walk by the lake.

As she approached the lake she took in the beautiful scenery surrounding Hogwarts. It was a beautiful old building near a beautiful lake. She sat down and leaned against a tall Willow Tree. She heard footsteps approaching her but didn't bother to look up.

"Leave. Now!" Hermione told the person who was standing directly beside her. She still didn't look up.

"Sorry," said a familiar voice and she looked up to see a blonde boy walking away.

"Malfoy?" Hermione said.

"What, Hermione?" said Malfoy, looking back at her. He was about 10 feet away.

"You wanted to join S.P.E.W.?"

"Yeah, I did. House-Elves deserve money," Malfoy said smiling.

"Really? I didn't know you agreed with me on that," Hermione smiled, S.P.E.W. did need more members.

"You don't know a lot about me," Malfoy told her.

"Really? Like what?" Hermione asked.

"Like that..." Malfoy paused and moved closer to Hermione who was now standing.

"Like?" Hermione said.

Malfoy was moving closer and now there was only a small gap between them.

"Like that I'm in love with Hermione Granger," Draco said as he pulled Hermione towards him and kissed her.

Hermione quickly pushed him away and started running as fast as she could to the building, not stopping until she got to the common room. She whispered the password and climbed into the portrait hole, not once looking back. She entered the common room panting and blushing, which brought a lot of attention to her.

Ginny was the first to come over to her. "Are you okay? You look sick."

"I am," she lied. "I'm going to go to sleep."

Hermione walked over to the staircase, which led to the girl's dormitories, but Ron and Harry stopped her.

"What's the matter?" Harry asked.

"Nothing, I'm just tired. Good night," she said climbing the stairs.

Hermione changed into her nightgown and sat down on her bed. The room was empty and Hermione was extremely happy for this; she wanted to be alone.

The kiss had been nice- very nice actually- and Hermione didn't know why she left. She did like Malfoy she couldn't deny it. Why had she broken off the kiss?

She didn't know why she did. It seemed like the right thing at the time.

What would Ron and Harry think? They wouldn't understand.

Hermione drifted off to sleep thinking of Malfoy.

Malfoy walked down to the lake after spending some time alone in the empty classroom. He spent the time alone thinking of the woman he loved- Hermione. She was hard working, determined, and beautiful. Just like me, Malfoy thought.

As Malfoy approached the lake, he saw he was not alone. He saw a girl sitting under a willow tree, staring into space. Hermione, he thought.

She had apparently heard him coming because when he took his next step she hissed, "Leave. Now," without looking up.

"Sorry," he heard himself mumble, and he turned to go back to the castle.

"Malfoy?" Hermione said turning towards him.

"What, Hermione?" he said sounded nervous. Why am I nervous? He asked himself.

"You wanted to join S.P.E.W.?"

"Yeah, House-elves deserve money," he said smiling. I'M SMILING? Malfoy couldn't believe himself. Smiling and saying House-elves deserve money! What is wrong with me?

"Really? I didn't know you agreed with me on that," Hermione said, smiling back. Hmmm, she smiled at me... It's a start!

"You don't know a lot about me," he said, realizing immediately that what he said sounded extremely cheesy.

"Really? Like what?" Hermione asked, now standing.

"Like that..." Malfoy started to move closer to Hermione.

"Like?" Hermione said.

Malfoy started to move closer. He didn't know what he was doing, but he had a feeling it would end well. There was only about six inches of a gap between the two students. "Like that I love Hermione Granger," he said that pulled her into a kiss.

The kiss that Malfoy had been longing for was over in less than a second. Hermione pulled away and started to run to the castle.

Malfoy didn't understand. She didn't object as he got closer to her but then she broke off the kiss. Malfoy just stood there, dumbstruck, as he watched Hermione run to castle. After a few minutes, he stormed back into the castle, mad. The girl he loved just rejected her. My father would be so mad, he thought cringing at the thought of Lucius Malfoy.

Malfoy went up to his dorm and sat on his bed. Crabbe and Goyle had come over to him but Malfoy told them there was some food down in the common room and they left quickly.

Malfoy drifted off to sleep thinking of how to win Hermione over.
