LOVE IN MOTION

A songfic written by forbidden-paradise

Featuring the lyrics: Icehouse - "Love in Motion"

Severus Snape had never been one to show his emotions. Always carrying a vacant expression, nobody really knew whether he was happy or sad, angry or excited. Not that he cared what other people thought of him, except for perhaps one significant other.

Give you my heart and soul

I give you everything

Sitting alongside him in Potions, Lily Evans successfully helped him make the Drought of Living Death. Her fascinating green eyes beamed into his empty black ones, and he couldn't help but show his delight.

He smiled.

Put it all in your hands

Now is it such a sin?

Ever since then, he and Lily had formed a slight friendship that not even Exploding Snap could disturb. It wasn't often Severus associated with Mudbloods, as Bellatrix Black liked to call them, but Lily seemed sort of, exceptional. After all, she was intelligent, witty and not to mention beautiful.

Severus never thought he would like her more than a friend, but very soon he couldn't avoid the feelings that were slowly bubbling up inside of him, rather like an almost-ready Felix Felicis potion. But did she feel the same way too? Was it a sin to like somebody from Gryffindor?

Uh huh, round again

Taking that back step one more time

Oh no, there she goes

Look at that girl, love in motion

He watched them dance; each step taken in perfect unison. James Potter guided Lily effortlessly around the room, and to Severus it seemed he had been dancing for years. Potter's hand on the small of her back made Severus glower in jealousy - how he wished it was he who was dancing with her. It seemed Lily was having a great time with Potter, but unbeknownst to him, Lily was secretly wishing to break free from his grasp. It wasn't as if she didn't not like him, he was just a little intimidating and conceited.

I'm gonna follow you

Anywhere you go

Severus paced up and down the Great Hall, following Potter and Lily's footsteps as they engaged in a slow dance. He fumed when James smiled at her, and to his horror, she smiled back (rather reluctantly, of course, but Severus didn't know that). He swore on his life that if Potter decided to do anything with her, he'd curse him. He knew quite a good curse that would leave him unconscious - sectumsempra anyone?

And when I make you mine

Won't ever let you go

Lily's friendship with Severus had sparked an unknown feeling he never knew he possessed. Soon, every note they passed in class meant something more, every glance, every joke shared. Severus couldn't help but fall for her gracious, caring ways. Yes, she was Muggleborn, but he was half-blood, and knew how it felt to live with Muggles. His own father, Tobias Snape, wasn't the most pleasant person he knew, after all.

One night in the dungeons, as Severus willed himself to sleep, he realised that perhaps he was in love with Lily, however unsure he was.

'Love is a strong word, Half-Blood Prince,' a voice told him. 'Perhaps it's lust you speak of.'

Severus contemplated this.

"If I'm in love with her, then I guess Hufflepuff will win the next House Cup," he whispered to himself (which would have made him sound insane if someone else had heard him) and then as sleep overtook him, he decided on something.

He would show her how much he cared, if it was the last thing he did.

Uh huh, round again

Taking that back step one more time

Severus nearly gasped as Potter dipped Lily, and grasped for his wand when he saw their lips almost touching. But as Potter took that back step once again, Severus didn't know what had come over him. Hexing his enemy in the middle of the Great Hall, at the sixth year St Valentine's Dance? What would his friends think of him, what would Lily think of him? It was too much, and therefore his wand was placed deftly into his black robes.

Besides, why would Severus Snape, the brilliant Half-Blood Prince, be jealous of James Potter, who was nothing but scum? Yeah, sure, Potter was perhaps a little better looking than he, and had girls hanging off his every word, but Severus was intelligent, quick, imaginative, and even slightly humorous when he wanted to be. James Potter was nothing compared to him.

Oh no, there she goes

Making it easy, feel like dancing

Lily caught Severus' eye at one stage, and smiled at him, catching him off guard. Quickly composing himself, he managed a small smile back. He quickly looked beside him for any sign of his fellow Slytherins - thankfully they were outside enjoying the quaint winter scene - as he wouldn't want anyone to know what he felt for her. His friends would probably disown him if they found out.

If Severus could, he would have asked Lily to dance before Potter forced her into it. But his dignity and reputation was at stake - although he really did feel like dancing.

Uh huh, round again

Only one thing gonna change your mind

Oh no, there she goes

Tell you that girl is love in motion

The only thing that would deter Severus from taking things further with Lily was if she had even the smallest feelings for Potter. It wouldn't be worth the effort anymore, as he knew Potter would gloat in it and snap her up in seconds. Even if Lily did so much as glance at Severus, Potter would go red with anger and clench his fists, so imagining what it would be like if Lily had smiled at Potter instead, well, Severus didn't want to know.

She was a candle; glowing brightly in even the darkest of places, and only some dim, arrogant twit (like Potter) could put her out.

Won't ever let you go

Love in motion

Severus Snape sat at his desk in the dungeons, trying desperately not to reminisce so far back in time. He lifted his wand and rested it against his head, out of it came a long, silvery thread and he placed it into the pensieve before him. He would never think of this memory again, and somehow, he felt a little guilty. Lily Evans was now a fading memory, and soon it would be gone.

Perhaps he hated Harry Potter so much because he was the product of the woman he once lusted for, and the man who treated him derogatively. The fact that Harry was famous for something he couldn't control and he, the Half-Blood Prince was not, despite the fact he could brew every single potion to date. Eileen Prince would have been proud, if she was still alive.

Then suddenly Severus understood.

He only despised Harry because he survived the Avada Kedavra curse, and Lily didn't.

A fading memory?

Look at that girl, love in motion.

Author notes: Hope you enjoyed it. I have a feeling I might get some contraversial reviews (not exactly sure why), but if you thought it was bad, explain why!

Thanks!
