A big thank you to Avril for being my inspiration. And to Rosa and Abbie...without you, Adara and Abbie wouldn't exist.

Prologue

Set in Adara's first year, approximately 2 months into the school year.

"Professor Dumbledore will see you now." A voice echoed from nowhere and to my left, a door swung open. I sighed, but followed orders for once, and marched in. My hands were slung deep into my jean pockets, my hair curtaining my eyes partly. Dumbledore was nowhere to be seen, so I simply took a seat in front of his desk.

His office was pretty amazing, but I wasn't about to appear interested. After all, he was probably looming in the shadows somewhere.

"Good afternoon Miss Lestrange." How right I was. I heard footsteps behind me, but did not turn or reply. He swept past me and seated himself in his chair; where once settled, placed his elbows upon the desk, clasped his fingertips together and looked over his spectacles at me.

"Professor McGonnagall asked me to speak to you. About your attitude."

I lifted my gaze to his, yet still said nothing.

"You realise we have a uniform here?"

"Yes."

"As a uniform, it should be followed."

"Make me." I rolled me eyes. No way was he getting me in some prissy skirt and stupid dress thing over the top. No way.

He smiled. "Oh I can, but I would prefer if I didn't have to." He sighed and shook his head. "Why are you doing this Adara?"

"Doing what?"

"Rebelling. Why is conforming so bad?"

"Because it's not me."

"How do you know unless you try?"

"Why should I try unless I know?" There was a silence, as he took in my words. I could beat him in a battle of wits any day.

"Is this because of your parents?"

"Who, Frank and Marie?"

He looked over his glasses further. "Your real parents."

"How would I know? Thanks to you I don't know them. Now if all you want to do is give me some stupid lecture, I don't want to hear it. I'm leaving." I stood, rolling my eyes.

"With or without my aid your parents would have given you up. Without my aid... they might've killed you. With my aid, you may see them again."

"I've got no wish to play happy families." My hand was on the doorknob.

"Sit down. We still have much more important issues to discuss."

I sighed, yet sat back down.

"I have come to notice, as have many people, your isolation. You have no friends. Why?"

I laughed mirthlessly. "Oh please. This is important?" I stood up again. "Let's get this straight. I'm not wearing a uniform, I'm not making friends, and I'm not going to see my parents. And I'm leaving now. Thanks for the 'inspirational' talk, but I don't need it. Kick me out of here, fine. Please, make my day." I yanked open the door, slamming it behind me. Something fell of a wall and smashed. "Good."

I stormed down the halls, unbelieving I had wasted half my evening already. I had work to do. There were footsteps behind me, catching up to me gradually. I turned my head to see who it was. Hopefully someone I could abuse. I rolled my eyes.

"Good evening. Cheerful as always, Adara?"

"I was until I saw you." I shook my head, and took up a faster place, but he caught up with me again.

"Is there something you want?"

"No."

I walked faster again, but he held my pace. I stopped dead.

"OK then, well why are you following me?"

"Because I'm in Slytherin as well, remember? This is the way to the Common Room." He smirked. Oh, how I hated that smirk.

"Well off you go then. I'd prefer to walk by myself."

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

"OW!" Somehow my arm had just grabbed his and twisted it behind his back, where I threatened to break it. As good as he was with spells, he sucked in combat.

"I'm going to ask you one more time Malfoy. Fuck off." I whispered it ever so lightly into his ear, before releasing him and pushing him away. With a final glare he did as I bid, and set off. I waited until his footsteps had faded away before I continued on...
