- Author's Note:
- This is to Sickle, Ickle, Pickle, and Nickle, my friends. Or frients as I once wrote.
It was around midnight when he was awakened by an oh-so-familiar tapping. Harry sat up in bed while reaching for his glasses. He glanced at the clock which read 1:00 AM. His birthday. He heard the tapping again and looked at the window. Six owls were each trying to force there way through the closed window. Harry rushed to the window and opened it. From his friends, each a letter contained birthday greetings. But one in particular caught his eye. The one from Cho, his girlfriend. Carefuly he opened her letter.
Dear Harry,
Happy birthday! I wasn't quite sure what to get you, but then I thought ' what do we both love besides each other?' Quidditch! So I hope you enjoy it.
Love,
Cho
Harry opened her package and into his hand fell a small globe and a pamphlet. Harry opened the book and read...
The amazing Wonder Globe!
Just put it on the end of your broomstick
and it will tell you where you are!
Want to know how far away from
something you are?
Ask the Wonder Globe!
Want to know where a town or
city is?
Want to know the exact time away from
something you are?
Yes, you've guessed it,
Just ask the Wonder Globe!
Made by WG Inc.
Harry turned to globe over in his hand. It was about the size of his fist.
And just barely visible, the pop out where you would attach it to your broom. Then he opened Ron's.
Harry,
Happy B-day! Mum made you this cake. She got the recipe from Witch Weekly.
Warning: Do not open the other package. Fred and George thought it would be amusing to send you a snake. Mum would've stopped them but by the time she found out they had already sent it. I don't think it's poisonous, but that's not what this is about. This warning is to alert you that that little devil is fast as lightning. Fred and George accidentally let him lose in the house and we had to find him before Mom found out. Remember when we watched that Muggle movie Mouse Hunt? That's what it was like. Although he's harmless I don't think you should take him to Hogwarts. Snakes aren't allowed 'cause they're the sign of You-Know-Who.
Ron
P.S. Why haven't we heard from you?
Harry warily opened one of the packages. Luckily it was the cake. Harry decided not to open the snake's box, and hoped Fred and George had put holes in it. Harry looked back down at the pile of letters Hermione's perfect writing shown like a beacon compared with the others. Even with the Hogwarts letter.
Dear Harry,
I do hope you are doing well. It has been such a long time since we last heard from you. My Mother made you this cake (sugar free of course). Please write soon. I'm going to Diagon Alley in a few days. Will you come with me. I don't think Ron has his things yet either. We could go together.
With Love,
Hermione
The next letter Harry picked up was attached to a small box. In it were some rock candies. "Oh, Hagrid." Harry decided to try to entice Dudley with them instead of eating them himself.
Dear Harry,
Happee Birthday Harry! How have yeh been doin'. Haven't heard form yeh in a while Harry, yeh alright? Can't wait ter see ya again.
Hagrid
Now there were only two letters left. Harry picked up the one from his Godfather. Although Harry barely knew him, Harry cared very deeply for him. When Harry opened it a beautiful Macaw feather floated to the floor. Harry bent down to pick it up, then went on to read Sirius' letter.
Dear Harry,
Can't tell you where I am but I can tell you it is beautiful here. But enough about me. I am correct in believing it is your birthday? A fine age sixteen. I'm sorry I couldn't get you anything, but I promise when I'm free I'll get you something better than a bird's feather. Harry I'm concerned about you. I haven't heard from you in a long time, and when I contacted Ron and Hermione they also have not received any letters from you. As soon as you read this, owl me so I know you're alright. Remember to tell me if the Dursley's aren't treating you right. I'd be there before you could say "Azkaban". (You know I would!)
Sirius
Just when Harry was going to open the Hogwarts letter, another owl flew in. It dropped the letter in his hands and flew back out.
Dear Harry,
I'm sorry if this a bit late, but I live in the heart of a forest and owl (mailing ones) are hard to come by. Sirius is perfectly safe, but we're worried about you.
Harry let out a long sigh.
We hear you haven't been mailing anyone Harry. Send Sirius and I an owl right away. It's not nice to worry us like this Harry. You're scaring Sirius half out of his wits. I hope your birthday is happy one.
Remus
Harry only glanced over the Hogwarts letter. He scooped up everything and put it under the lose floorboard, except the snake which he set on his desk. Harry laid down in bed frowning. Why did everybody think he needed protection? He had fended for himself as long as he could remember. Now wasn't any different. But as he drifted off to sleep the logical part of Harry's mind was arguing with the reckless part. Deep in him he knew the reckless would win, it always did. But logic had a good argument this time, and stumped him with a question he did not know the answer to. Why hadn't he mailed anyone?
