They Shook Hands: Year Two (Original Version)
- Story Summary:
- Harry Potter's holiday with the Muggles has been dreadful. He wants nothing more than to return to Hogwarts, but when he is rescued by a masked wizard in a black robe, it sets off a chain reaction of disasters. Things are no calmer at school as an ancient legend comes to life and a deadly monster stalks the halls. The new Defense professor boasts that he will end the threat, but can even the magical might of the famed Gilderoy Lockhart prevail against the Heir of Slytherin? Nobody knows who it could be, but the prime suspect is none other than Harry himself!
Harry Potter has had a lonely summer holiday. None of his friends have written to him, his Muggle relatives treat him worse than a dog, and he's not even allowed to mention the M-word. Fed up with the status quo, Harry resolves to run away, but his plans are interrupted by the arrival of a strange wizard at his door. Who is the wizard? What does he want with Harry? And why is he wearing a white mask?
It's Harry's first day of freedom from the Muggles, but his plans for playing Quidditch with his friends are derailed by the front page of the Daily Prophet. Elan and Draco are in trouble, but what can Harry do about it? Some of Lucius Malfoy's past comes to light as Harry gets answers to some of his questions.
Lucius Malfoy's reporter friend has come by to interview Harry for the Daily Prophet to disprove the reports of his abduction. Harry gets to see all his friends from school and finally play some Quidditch. They revive some old jokes, and the mystery of the missing letters is briefly discussed. Everything is going just peachy until Elan gets a strange letter at dinner.
Elan learns he is to be sent off to Durmstrang Academy, and a shouting match ensues. Draco has broom angst over his out-dated Comet-260. Harry's interview in the Sunday Prophet sets things right. It's the annual trip to Diagon Alley, and Harry tries several things for the first time. There are surprises all around as they get to meet the new Defense teacher.
Harry meets the new Defence professor in Flourish and Blotts and escapes only to confront Weasley in the street. Mr. Malfoy interrupts them but gets into his own fight with Weasley Sr. The boys get new robes, Harry is accosted in the Leaky Cauldron, and he receives quite a surprise back at the manor.
Harry and Draco prepare to return to Hogwarts while Elan leaves for Durmstrang, Mr. Malfoy lectures on house elves, and the boys find their friends on the Hogwarts Express. There's some important news in the Daily Prophet, but Weasley doesn't know anything about it.
The Slytherins discuss the Harry Potter Magical Child Protection Act with Terry Boot. Flint tries to recruit Crabbe and Goyle for the Quidditch team. Harry learns the identity of the Head Boy and Girl. All the students arrive at school and hear the Sorting Hat's new song.
Harry's homework has gone missing and he has to face Professor McGonagall! But he also has Potions class, which is good. At the end of the day, they will have their first Defence lesson. How will Lockhart measure up? Jenna and Harry have an interesting conversation, Harry copes with his fame, and Draco receives a letter.
Draco shares his letter from Elan; the Slytherins have their first Herbology class. Harry has detention with Lockhart and hears a mysterious voice. They all suffer through Defence class, and the Daily Prophet tells about the Ministry's new budget.
Halloween descends over Hogwarts, and the entire Weasley clan is fair game for Slytherin tricks. Draco takes it upon himself to push Percy to his limits, while the Quidditch team torments the twins. Music to sing in choir is discussed, but they can't come up with any good ideas. Everyone has fun at the Halloween Feast, but Draco goes missing, a prefect is dragged off by Snape, and Harry hears the phantom voice again. This time, there's a victim.
Harry and Tim report on the night's adventures, but not all is as it seems. The legend of the Chamber of Secrets is told. Gryffindor has lost a whole heap of points and her team Beaters as the Quidditch match looms. Harry learns that one Weasley is a decent sort, but takes delight in tormenting his favourite enemy.
Harry is accosted by Filch before breakfast. The old man's going barmy. The match starts off splendidly enough, but there's something wrong with one of the Bludgers. It won't leave Harry alone. Can he catch the Snitch if he has to play tag? What creative solution does Slytherin's Seeker devise? That night, the Heir of Slytherin strikes again as well, and Harry has a visitor in the night.
A Duelling Club is announced, so of course Harry and his friends will sign up. Young wizards encouraged to cast curses at each other? What could possibly go wrong? Harry realizes a new gift, and it could mean nothing but trouble. The young Slytherins find something strange on top of the Astronomy Tower, and a guest comes to Slytherin House.
Harry is troubled, and the school is all abuzz with rumors and speculation. Another attack leaves the castle stunned, and Professor Snape comes asking questions. One of Harry's secrets comes out, Jenna and Harry make fun of Draco, the choir rounds off the year with a Christmas performance, and Percy Weasley finally gets what he deserves.
Harry visits the Nott family for the holidays. Tim and his father treat Harry wonderfully, but he still feels apprehensive about the looming Christmas and New Year's parties. Harry meets Pansy's parents and loads of other important people. The girls tease Harry; the gang discusses Elan Malfoy and the Heir of Slytherin. All the girls dance with all the boys, except for Tim and Pansy. Christmas presents are exchanged, Wizarding society celebrates the new year, and kisses go all around.
Harry gets a letter from Flint shortly after he boards the Hogwarts Express. The team captain will not be returning to school, and Bletchley is appointed to fill his place. The Quidditch team begins an overdrive practice schedule under new leadership as they prepare to face Hufflepuff. The uneasy peace in the castle is broken as a sixth-year girl is Petrified. Chaos results shortly thereafter, and it's left to Professor Snape to return order. Slytherin plays against Hufflepuff, and Harry finds a clue that might help unravel the mystery of Slytherin's Heir.
It's St. Valentine's Day! Lockhart has surprises planned for the students, but his fellow teachers might just tar and feather him before he can count all his cards. Weasley's detention is over, but someone forgot to inform Professor Snape. Percy helps Harry out when an accident ruins his homework, but the accident lets an alert Harry unravel the secret of the little black diary. What he learns could solve the mystery of the Heir of Slytherin. Harry and Draco stumble on the scene of another attack, but something is horribly different this time. The Ministry of Magic finally takes some action, but is it the right action?
The castle tries to carry on after Hagrid's dramatic arrest as Harry's fears of the school closing grow stronger. Lucius Malfoy and the other governors finally get involved in the situation, and strict new security measures are put into place. In the process of flouting those restrictions, Harry and his friends stumble onto a clue which could unlock the mystery of the Beast of the Chamber! Lockhart acts as though he solved the problem personally, and Harry is tired of listening to the windbag. The Heir of Slytherin relentlessly attacks again, this time kidnapping a student into the very Chamber of Secrets itself!
Harry Potter has opened the Chamber of Secrets! Accompanied by Draco Malfoy and Timothy Nott, he advances into darkness to confront the Heir of Slytherin. Armed with wand, desperate courage, and the best guesses he and his friends can make, Harry's own life is in grave danger as faces his destiny once again.
The threat is over! Harry emerges from the Chamber of Secrets after confronting the Heir of Slytherin, and brings Ginny Weasley to Professor Snape's door. The girl's parents arrive, and Harry exchanges nasty words with her brothers. Percy expresses his thanks to Harry and gets in way over his head. Professor McGonagall announces the end of the terror and the resumption of normal activity, but Professor Lockhart has gone missing. Professor Snape figures more importantly to the Slytherins, the second years choose new classes, and Percy asks Harry for a personal favour.
The school year is over! Exams are finished! Yet there are still more surprises in store for the young Slytherins as a teacher returns to the school. Hermione Granger is remembered, the Hogwarts Express leaves for London, and Harry sees the Dursleys again. The exciting conclusion to They Shook Hands, Year Two.
