Chapter 1: Sleeping Arrangements

"Excuse me, but do you know where the library is?" Professor McGonagall asked a short, timid looking student once they reached the school. When they reached the east coast, the Knight Bus immediately drove to L.A., and then to the Sunnydale high school, where they were supposed to find the library. In the library, the "adopting" muggles were waiting for them. McGonagall followed the student's instruction and led her students to large double doors that according to the inscription above them, led to the library. "Now remember, perfect behavior." For some reason, she looked at Malfoy as she said this. They entered.

*********************

"Relax, Buff. There hasn't been a single weird thing since, um, since Jenny."

"I know. That's why I'm nervous. They're planning something. I know they are. Angel isn't the type to lay low for no reason."

"Yeah. I mean I thought he would try to kill you like fifteen times already. Maybe he's sick," Cordelia suggested.

"Cordelia? Don't help," Buffy said, a bit shocked.

"Where's Giles? He said he'd be right back," Willow asked, slightly worried.

"I really need to talk to him," Buffy said, as she paced restlessly in the room.

Giles entered the room from his office. He wasn't dressed in his usual tweed outfit. He wore a rather formal black jacket, on top of a white shirt and a tie.

"What happened?" Buffy asked, as she suppressed a laugh, "forgot your top hat?"

"Aww, you got all dressed up just for us? You shouldn't have..."

Xander said, amused.

"Yeah, Giles. We like the tweed," Willow said from her seat in front of the computer.

"How very funny you all are. I'm wearing this in honor of our guests."

"Huh?" Buffy said what every one looked.

"The expedition from England."

No one responded.

"The student exchange program," Giles explained again.

"That's today??" Buffy asked, surprised.

"Oh my god," Cordelia sounded panicked. She took out her mirror and immediately began applying make up to her face. Buffy gave Cordelia a disapproving look, but sent her hand through her hair, fixing it to her liking.

"I still don't understand why you made us sign up for this Giles. I mean, with everything going on..." Willow asked.

"Well Willow, because of everything that's going on, I figured that visitors from out of town would be safest with us. Otherwise they would be sitting ducks."

"Did you make sure that none of them is a mummy? 'Cause I don't really fell like going through the whole "I'll-make-you-my-eternal-partner" thing again," Xander said, a note of panic in his voice.

"Didn't Dru say that to you just last week?" Willow said, amused.

"Yeah well, it's becoming quite a popular line lately," Xander said a bit bitter. Just then McGonagall and her party entered.

"Wow Xander, a mummy and a vampire hit on you. And yet that's still an improvement in your love life," Cordelia taunted him.

"Well what can I say Cordy, only ghouls and monsters are attracted to me," Xander retorted, with a triumphant smile. Then they noticed their guests and became quiet.

"Hello. I'm Mr. Rupert Giles and you must be Professor McGonagall," Giles said and stretched out his hand. She shook it.

"Yes indeed. And these are Hermione Granger, Ronald Weasly,"

As Ron took a step forward Cordelia whispered to Buffy. "Hello salty goodness!"

McGonagall continued. "Harry Potter, Cho Chang,"

"I hope she's not a mummy," Xander said under his breath, so only Willow and Cordelia would hear.

"Ginny Weasly, Luna Lovegood and Draco Malfoy."

"Hello to all of you, and welcome," Giles said politely, "please meet: Buffy Summers-"

Buffy took a step forward and said "Hi" to the group.

"Alexander Harris, -"

"Hey! Call me Xander!"

Giles smiled and continued. "Willow Rosenberg, Cordelia Chase,"

"I hope I'm bunking with her!" Ron exclaimed in Harry's ear.

"And..." Giles paused to look around the library. "We are missing someone. I am sure he will be with us shortly."

There was an awkward moment of silence, until Cordelia approached Ron. She looked up at him, for at his height of 182 Centimeters he was significantly taller than her. "Hi. If you want you can sleep at my place."

Before Ron could answer Cordelia put her hand on his forearm.

"What school team are you on that you have such fine muscles?" Hermione, Willow and Buffy rolled their eyes simultaneously. Ginny giggled. Ron however, simply gazed at Cordelia, until it occurred to him he was expected to answer.

"Oh, um, Quidditch actually, Keeper, keeps Quaffle from getting out -"

"In," Ginny corrected her brother.

"In the hoops," Ron finished nervously.

Cordelia seemed pretty turned off by the tall redhead boy's weird answer. She turned to her friends and said "Weirdo!" in a tone that pretty much everyone heard. She turned back to Ron. "You know? I just remembered, father is sick and I'm not sure I should bring a boy..."

"Is that the internet?" Hermione asked Willow, as she walked towards her and the computer. Willow was a bit surprised by Hermione's enthusiasm.

"Oh yes. You know how to use it?"

"Well not really. But I heard all about it," Hermione sat down next to Willow in front of the computer.

"Here I'll show you," Willow said.

"Well looks like we have one sleeping arrangement," Giles said. Willow and Hermione nodded their approval.

Buffy decided it was time for her to take action. She approached the red haired girl. "Hi. Ginny, right? You can sleep at my place if you want."

"Yeah, sure," Ginny said, A bit disappointed. She thought it could've been fun to be with that Xander guy for a while...

"I want to sleep at the funny muggle's house!" Malfoy said and began to walk towards Xander.

"You can't Malfoy. It has been decided that you and Harry will sleep at Mr. Giles' home with me."

"What???" Harry and Malfoy said as they turned to McGonagall and began to protest.

Meanwhile Cordelia was trying to decide who she will invite to her house. She didn't want the weird kid, and the Asian was too beautiful - she might steal Cordelia's spotlight if they met someone. The other girl looked nice and normal. Cordelia approached Luna Lovegood.

"Hey. Want to sleep at my place?"

"Okay," Luna answered rather indifferently.

Xander was about to approach Cho when Ron called him. "Oi! Xander! Mind if I stay at your place?"

"No. Not at all," Xander answered, reluctantly.

Then someone entered the library. A teen that seemed 17 also, with wild black hair, kind of like Harry's, a somewhat dark complexion, walked in to the room, wearing a tank top and jeans.

Hey Rupert! Did ya get "It" yet?" he noticed there were several other people in the room. "Hi Buffy. Xander. Cordy Willow and...?"

"Hi Dean," Buffy answered.

Dean tried to remember the name of Hermione who was sitting next to Willow. "I'm sorry, I don't think I know you," he turned to the group of wizards. "Or any of you for that matter," he smiled at Cho.

"These are the foreign exchange students you signed to host, Dean,"

Giles said and gave Dean a reproachful look.

"Oh that's today??"

"Yes. Here," Giles handed Dean a very thick book with a picture of a clown on it.

"You going to read all that?" Buffy said with a note of skepticism in her voice.

"I guess you're not very busy," Xander said.

"Well it's a Stephen King, so I read it quick."

"No thank you. I didn't come anywhere near a dog till last year because of Cujo," Willow, said a little frightened.

"What is it about?" everyone turned around a bit surprised, as Cho asked this.

"Well, it's about a group of selected kids that decide to fight a... creature. An evil creature. A shape shifter. That turns into whatever thing that frightens his victim the most."

Harry, Hermione, Ron, shared a slightly amused smile, very similar to the one Buffy, Willow and Xander shared.

"So, which one of you will be my guest?" Dean asked.

"Cho Chang," McGonagall answered, and indicated towards Cho.

Dean turned to her with a smile. "Must be my lucky day."

Cho smiled. Harry's face resembled the expression of someone eating something very sour. Dean looked at the rest of the group. When he reached Harry he paused. "Nice hair mate."

*********************

"I am not sleeping next to him!"

"Oh yes you are. And you will also lower your tone since we are guests at Mr. Giles' house. I will sleep at the guest room and you two will sleep on this extendable sofa," McGonagall's tone left no room for argument. She went upstairs to her room. Reluctantly, Harry switched to his Pajamas as Malfoy did the same.

"I don't believe this. Not only is this a muggle bed, but I have to share it with you!" Malfoy said as he slipped under the covers.

"Oh, as if!" Harry said as he sat on the bed.

"What's that supposed to mean??" Malfoy said, his tone threatening.

"I heard the rumors!"

"You wish, Potter!"

Harry drew a thin red line with his wand in the middle of the bed.

"Whatever! But if so much as one of your magically-dyed-blond hairs crosses this line, an alarm will set off that will wake up a very pissed McGonagall. So don't get any ideas!"

**************

"So I can send almost every thing on your computer, to anyone anywhere who has this ICQ thing?" Hermione asked, enthusiastic.

"Well it shouldn't be a very big file, cause that would take hours. But that's the only limitation."

"And people can talk and see you because you have that camera connected to the computer?"

"Yep. And I can see them."

"Like Floo powder," Hermione muttered to herself.

"Umm, could you wait a minute? I think nature calls..." Willow said.

"Sure."

Willow got up and left the room. Hermione gazed at the computer and toyed with the mouse a bit. She was fascinated. "I should write this down..." Hermione searched her pockets, and then her eyes rested at her open suitcase, lying on the bed across the room. "Accio notebook!" Hermione exclaimed, and her notebook zoomed towards her from across the room. Just then Willow entered the room.

"You can do a summoning charm??" Willow said, impressed.

Hermione looked dumbfounded. "What? No! I just... It slipped," Hermione paused for a second, processing what Willow said. "How did you know that was a summoning charm?"

"Well I've been practicing it for weeks, y'know, concentrating on objects and trying to summon them? Sometimes I make them twitch a little."

Willow turned to a pencil on the table and focused on it. "Pencil!" Willow called. The pencil rolled and fell of the table.

Hermione was in complete shock. "You need to say the incantation, "Accio!", and you need -"

Before Hermione continued Willow decided to try again. "Accio pencil!" The pencil zoomed from the floor into Willow's hand.

"A wand," Hermione finished, surprised even more by the perfect summoning charm she just witnessed.

"I did it! I actually did it! Did you see that? Just whoosh! And it was in my hand! Thanks!" Willow said, with a broad grin on her face. She began to focus on her alarm clock, when Hermione began to talk to her.

"How did you do that without a wand?"

"What?"

Hermione took out her wand and showed it to Willow. "Only very powerful witches can perform without wands."

Willow was examining Hermione's wand. "What? Nah. it was probably just beginner's luck," Willow moved a couple of steps towards the phone. She figured she might have to call Buffy soon. "Umm, Hermione? Why do you have a wand?"

Hermione flushed. "Oh, well..." Hermione paused. This girl obviously knew something about magic. On the other hand, this city was placed on the hellmouth. And that couldn't be good. Eventually, Hermione decided to keep quiet, until she would know more about what's happening here. "It's a prop. We're raising a school play."

"Then how did you know about the spell?"

"Willow I'm sorry, but I'm very tired," Hermione faked a yawn. "I think I'll go to sleep."

"Yeah, sure."

Willow turned of all the lights. After a while, when she thought Hermione had fallen asleep, Willow got out of bed and called Buffy.

**************

"You know what? You can sleep in my room. I'll sleep in the basement for a couple of days. I'll be out of this dump in a year anyway," Xander said to Ron as they sat in Xander's living room, where Ron was putting his new Twinkie-eating skill in to use. A lot of use. "I saw you met Cordelia. I wish I could have saved you that horrible moment."

"Why? She was way hot and it seemed like she fancied me!"

Xander punched Ron in the forearm. "She's my girlfriend! She was just trying to make me jealous."

Ron got red in the face.

"Although, I have to admit, she can flirt with you as much as she wants as long as I get to spend some quality time alone with that redhead chick..."

Now it was Ron's turn to punch Xander in the forearm. "She's my sister you git!"

"Ohhh sorry..." Xander looked confused for a second.

"What's a git?"

**************

"What are you doing?" Cordelia said as she entered her bedroom, where she spread a mattress out on the floor, for Luna to sleep in. But Luna was checking something in Cordelia's pillowcase.

"I'm looking for nargles," Luna answered coolly.

"Oh. What are nargles?"

"Little winged worms that like to climb into your head through your ears," Luna said as she continued to look in the pillowcase.

At that moment, Cordelia decided she was never going to sign up for a foreign student exchange program ever again.

**************

Ginny took some popcorn from the plate on the table in Buffy's living room. They were both in their pajamas, watching a movie on television.

Ginny liked Buffy. They had a nice time, and ate a lot of chocolate. The "Oreo's" Buffy gave her tasted even better than chocolate frogs. Now however, the fluid conversation has stopped and they were just being quiet. Then Buffy broke the silence.

"Let's play a game."

"Sure." Ginny hoped it was a good game. Things were beginning to get a bit dull.

"It's called "Anywhere But Here". Do you know it?"

Ginny nodded. She remembered half the girls answering it didn't matter where they were as long as it was with Gilderoy Lockhart in her first year.

Buffy thought Ginny was pretty cool. But they pretty much exhausted the small talk and get to know routines by now. Buffy wondered if she dared to switch in to something more personal. She went for it.

"I think I know who you want to be "Anywhere But Here" with," Buffy said with a mischievous smile.

"Oh really?" Ginny replied, with a challenging look.

Buffy put her fingertips on her temples as if she were a charlatan psychic faking concentration. The gesture reminded Ginny of Professor Trelawney. "I see a dark haired boy... with some sort of scar..."

Ginny laughed. "You're a bit late. I used to fancy Harry. I've had several boyfriends since," Ginny said. "What about you Buffy? Do you have a boyfriend?"

Buffy was very relieved when the phone rang. She didn't feel like rehashing the Angel story, nor did she feel like lying to her new friend.

"I'll be right back," Buffy got up and went to the kitchen and picked up the phone.

Ginny was alone in the living room. There was a soft knock on the door. Ginny wasn't sure if she imagined it or not. She didn't see anyone by the door. For a second she thought of calling Buffy, but she didn't want to bother her for what was probably nothing. Ginny got up and walked towards a window that oversees the house entrance. She stuck her head out. Angelus grabbed her by the head and threw her on the front lawn.
