Chapter 2.

Loves Legend.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Draco Malfoy walked through the deserted halls of Hogwarts the next night, a letter clutched in his hands, and a frown on his face.

Draco,

What in the Dark Lords name do you think you're doing? Inviting a Slayer into our home? For dinner at best? You are an embarrassment! There was a reason our Lord chose to inform you of her presence, but now I am starting to regret that he did. You will inform Ms. Mahon that she will NOT in any way be attending the dinner party on Saturday night. Please do not insult me with your idiocy any further.

Lucius

He hadn't even bothered to address it with the false sincerity that he usually did. Draco was extremely confused. He tried to remember back to the time when they'd found out that Kathryn was one of the potentials. It hadn't been a big deal - she was one out of a very big group. Their method was to destroy the sense of security that these girls had - their family, their friends. In doing this, it would bring down the protecting walls around them, leaving them defenseless and vulnerable, and if one of these girls eventually became the Slayer, then she would not be a problem. They hadn't counted on the other Slayer dying though; they hadn't finished getting through all of the Slayer's. That's why when Kathryn became the Slayer they had to act quickly.

Lucius Malfoy did not inform Draco of a lot of things that had to do with the Dark Lord. And this was not an exception, Draco remembered how his father had gone on a 'business trip' for about a week and a half a few months ago, but he had not taken it into account. Could something really bad have happened? Could Lucius have done something to Kathryn? Draco was desperate to find out - he'd started to feel a connection to the girl, a connection he knew was extremely inappropriate but nonetheless there. He decided to visit the library and see what he could find out about Slayers and their connection to ... creatures of the night. He had learned early that the first Slayer had been created from an innocent girl, created with an element of darkness in her, giving her a choice where the light usually prevailed. But not all Slayers had gone this way. Take Faith for example, Draco had always wanted to meet this one, if not to ogle at her dark beauty but to learn how her change of heart had come about.

When Draco entered the library, there was no one there except the new assistant librarian. (No one, not even Voldemort knew yet that James Mathison was Kathryn's watcher - don't ask me why, maybe the old guy's loosing his touch hehe). When the man looked up a saw him, Draco was surprised to see a flash pass through his mild blue eyes. He reminded him a great deal of Professor Lupin, the Defense against the Dark Arts teacher he had had in third year. He was of a medium height, with light brown, almost sandy blonde hair and lean but fairly built for a man of his age. But it wasn't only in these features that he noticed the resemblance, it was those eyes, those eyes that deceived you on your first impression, for everyone had thought that Professor Lupin was just an ordinary Professor - until they'd found out that he was in fact a werewolf with incredible strength. It had been in Lupin's eyes, Draco thought, that he'd known there was something more to the man then he let on, and he felt the exact same way about this one. He glanced at Mr. Mathison but made sure to look away as he made his way along to the shelf that held all the myths about supernatural beings. Even in the wizarding world there was a lot of controversy about the topic of whether the Slayer truly existed. Running his long fingers across the selected shelf, he finally found what he was looking for. He pulled 'The Vampire Slayer; Myths and Legends' out of the shelf, and found himself a quiet corner in the back of the library. He opened it gently and scanned his eyes across the pages as he flipped them one by one. Finally, something caught his eye.

'There have not been many instances of a Vampire and Slayer falling in love, but when it happens, the love is in the truest form. Although both Vampire and Slayer have an element of darkness inside, regardless of the inequality, the magical forces that allow such a tainted creature as the Vampire to place love for a human being above all else, place this love on a pedestal, as do the forces that allow the Slayer, the fighter of all creatures evil, to find love and devotion towards and within the creature that has caused so much pain and destruction are moved beyond all expectations.'

Draco was surprised to say the least. His father had never mentioned anything like this - he'd never even known it could happen! He had to find out who these people were. His eager eyes traveled through the words as they came, but they strayed momentarily when he caught sight of a muggle-drawn picture on the next page.

The girl was petite, with long golden curls and smooth skin. She wore a blood-red dress with lace-trim suited to fit in during the medieval period. She had startling blue eyes, but they were not focused on the artist. She was looking up at the being in front of her. Those eyes, full of love and trust, staring into his face. The figure in front of her, whose expression mirrored her own, was tall and broad-shouldered, but his face was not one of humanity. He had been portrayed in his demon visage. Though frightening to some, Draco found an exquisite beauty in the hard lines and chiseled features of a vampire in its demon face.

The girl had a wooden cross in her hand, and she was holding it to the vampire's heart. Instead of shying away, the vampire had his hand clasped over hers, and was pressing it to him in a sign of trust and devotion.

Draco finally tore his eyes away from the picture and found where he had left off only moments before. Just as he was about to continue, his sharp senses picked up soft nearly silent footsteps stealthily headed towards him. Just as the figure came into view, he slammed the book shut.

It was James Mathison.

The assistant librarian eyed the book, his eyes hard. Draco stared back, not breaking eye contact. Finally, overwhelmed with Draco's practiced glare, Mr. Mathison looked away.

"Is there a reason you need to be reading that?" he asked in a cool voice. Draco glanced down at the book.

"Is there any reason I shouldn't be? It's not in the restricted section. You have no right to question me and what I choose to read," Draco retorted. Mr. Mathison seemed lost for words for a few moments.

"As full librarian of this library in Madam Pince's absence, I have the right to forbid any student to read a book I deem inappropriate. Yes, that includes the head boy," he said, answering the question that had been lingering on Draco's mouth. He picked up the large book.

"From now on, this book WILL be in the restricted section, and you are forbidden from reading it," he said, his voice turning harder by the second.

"What the hell is the problem? Why are you trying to keep me from reading about Slayer's? They're just a myth," Draco said, searching the man's eyes for a hint of knowledge or debate.

"Whether that is true or not is not the issue, now you'd best go back to your dormitory before I am forced to kick you out," Mr. Mathison said. Draco couldn't believe it. Who did this guy think he was?

"You better believe that Professor Dumbledore will be hearing about this," he spat out before standing up and stalking out. James watched the boy go, the book hugged to his chest. He put it on the table and looked down at it.

Why oh why did he have to choose this book of all books? Perhaps sheltering Kathryn from things that she really should know was not the right approach. James knew exactly who and what Draco Malfoy was and he also knew all about his father. He sighed heavily.

What was he going to do?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Kathryn had not had time to visit James over the last two days. Actually, that wasn't really the issue, she hadn't wanted to. She hadn't wanted to believe that James had lied to her. Well, not lie as such, but a lie of omission was lie enough. Her thoughts had been filled with the horrors she knew would come if she actually went through with the dinner this Saturday night. How could she face him? How could she face the man that had practically destroyed her life? She couldn't. So that's what she was on her way to do now. She was going to find Draco and tell him that thanks, but she would not be traveling to his house with them this weekend.

Being a Slayer, she could usually sense where a person one, so long as he or she wasn't too far away and only if she'd met them previously so she would know who's aura to look for. This also had to do with that fact that her Slayer/Witch capacities had opened up a whole world for her in Divination. The Divination teacher, Professor Trelawney had become obsessed with her! But if she really had the Sight then how come she hadn't realized that Kathryn was a Slayer yet? Duh!

Kathryn walked down a hallway that led off from the library, and felt it. He was in there. As quietly as she could, so as not to alert James, she eased the door open and tiptoed in, her Slayer abilities kicking into work. She needn't have worried though. James was standing behind a shelf, hiding himself from ... she craned to look past the shelves and saw a familiar head full of white-blonde hair. He was hiding from Draco? Hmm. She closed her eyes for a moment, after she'd made sure she wasn't visible to them and sucked in her breath. She was clearing her aura so that just in case Draco had any extra magical abilities (and she was beginning to think that he did) he would not be able to sense her draw near. She walked stealthily towards the shelves where the two men were situated. She crept up to a shelf behind James and saw that he was watching Draco read a book. She narrowed her eyes, and used her night-vision to grasp the title. The Vampire Slayer; Myths and Legends'. Whoa. What the hell? What was going on? How did Draco know? But her attention was strayed when she remembered that James was just standing there watching him. She decided to wait it out.

After a few more tense minutes, James finally made his move, and an argument ensued. Why was he so against Draco reading about Slayer's? If he'd already found out, then there was nothing they could do about it. After a few more hard words, Draco stalked off haughtily leaving James looking after him in wonderment. She waited a little longer and James put the book in the restricted section. Damn, how was she going to get to it now? Dinner was surely over by the time he left, locking the doors behind him, nothing an 'Alohamora' couldn't fix, so Kathryn had nothing else to do but go back to the Slytherin dormitories.

"I'll come back tonight, when everyone's in bed," she decided, and left.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

That night, more determined then ever, Draco produced the invisibility coat his father had given him for his 15th birthday from his trunk and pulled it over himself, making sure it covered all of him. He'd waited until all of his roommates were asleep, but when he got to the common room, Kathryn was leaving through the entrance. Where could she be going? He thought. He decided to follow her; he could always go to the library later. Making sure he was completely invisible, he followed her out of the Slytherin entrance, and up the many stairs that took them to a level that wasn't associated with the dungeons. After a few more turns and corridors he realized that she was actually going to the library herself! She whispered the unlocking spell and the lock on the door magically clicked open. Pushing the door open, she walked in quietly and he slipped in after her as she'd left the door slightly ajar.

Draco followed her as she made her way to the restricted section, suddenly wondering if he should keep his distance. Could she sense him? No, she would have done something by now if she could. She unlocked the doors to the restricted section the same way she had the library and entered. It was as if she knew exactly where she was going. Draco wasn't sure whether this was because she'd been in there so many times or if she was just drawn to something. When she pulled a book from the shelf, Draco realized with a start that it was the exact one he had been reading earlier that evening! He watched as she opened it to the page he had left, and stared breathlessly as she ran her finger over a mark that he'd accidentally made by smudging some of the old ink. It was as if she ... as if she knew. She sat down and started to read the page. He crept silently to her side and read along with her. Kathryn's head suddenly snapped up and she jumped up. Draco barely made it out of her way as she flung her arms round. Seemingly satisfied that she was alone, she sat down again, and they both began to read.

'The first Slayer to ever love and have her love reciprocated by a Vampire was the Slayer Jessique Duchamps in 1724 of Marseilles in France. The Vampire in question, Auguste, from the Order of Fontancês had been sired by the head of this Order, Fredêrick Fontancês himself. Auguste was to follow in his sire's footsteps, but instead had fallen under the spell of Jessique's utter and devoted love. Jessique's watcher, George Johansson was so overcome with rage at this prospect that he hunted Auguste down himself and staked him. Jessique, so distraught by the loss of her one and only love, killed herself.'

Kathryn sat back in her chair, shocked. She'd noticed the picture on the other page; the girl had been beautiful ...how could she have fallen in love with something so vile? Intrigued, she turned over the page and read on.

'In 1845, the Russian Slayer Sabine Misha fell in love with the Vampire Yvegeny of the Order of Kônstantin. This was a particularly known case as the Vampire in question had been none other then the one that had killed her entire family and watcher. Sabine had searched for him; searched all around the world, traveled for years, and whence finally she came of him they fought until she had her stake held at his heart. It is said that in this moment, the two saw a lifetime pass through their connected eyes and she could not kill him. The Council dismissed her from their office and sent trackers to find her and kill her so that the next Slayer would be chosen. Sabine and Yvegeny fought for their lives for many years, but finally, a Councilman poisoned Sabine through a goblet of wine. At her last breath, Yvegeny made a life-changing decision, and turned her. When the Council discovered this, they had both of them eliminated immediately - a Slayer turned Vampire would be the greatest threat.'

Draco's heart was pounding as he read through the page. He had to remember to keep silent, because he knew that the slightest sound he made would alert Kathryn's supernatural senses immediately. He eagerly read on.

'The last case of a Vampire and Slayer love is one of the most unique, for it involves two Vampires. The current Vampire Slayer, Buffy Summers - (at this, Kathryn let out an indignant snort) - Fell into a tumultuous love affair with the Vampire Angelus, a direct descendant from the Brethren of Aurelius. Angelus, known in early days as the Scourge of Europe and vicious killer was sired by the notorious Vampiress Darla. Though Darla herself had been sired by the Master of this order, Angelus became a more powerful and influential figure then his sire and was soon well known in many parts of the world. One day, Angelus killed a young gypsy girl and her family took revenge on him by restoring his soul. This case is unique partly because it is not known whether Angelus, presently known as Angel, and Buffy would have fallen in love if his soul had not been restored, therefore it cannot be said that this is a pure love. It is also unique because the Slayer has fallen in love with another Vampire, a Vampire that is to be unnamed until the love is consummated.'

Kathryn closed the book before her, staring into space, a million thoughts running through her head. A noise behind her startled her and she leapt into Slayer mode, pouncing. She grabbed into something soft and filmy, and when she pulled at it, a figure appeared before her. She gasped as she looked up into his stormy gray eyes, full of passion and intense. This was the son of the man who killed her entire family.

Draco took her brief moment of shock to grab her and pin her against a shelf. She gasped again, shocked that he had strength enough to match her own. Their faces were so close, she could feel his breath against her flushed cheek.

"What are you doing here?" she hissed. He looked at her, looked through her soul. She shivered under the intensity of his gaze. She never knew that being in such close proximity to him could have this effect on her.

"I could ask you that same question," he said softly. Her breathing had become shallow and ragged as she looked back up at him.

"Draco ..." she whispered, but was cut off when he brought his lips to hers and they met in a fiery battle of heat and passion. His lips were ice cold, but when they touched hers, they heated up immediately. It was the most intense kiss Kathryn had ever experienced, it felt as if when they had touched, a bond had been created and she felt exhilarated in his arms. When she finally realized the wrongness of the situation she pushed him away roughly.

"What do you think you're doing?" she choked out. Draco looked at her through hard eyes.

"I was doing exactly what you wanted to do," he replied, not letting go of her.

"Draco ... we can't," she stuttered. She saw his eyes flash in anger; it was an anger that she'd never seen before.

"What do you mean we can't? We just did! What, am I not good enough for you?" he spat out. She opened her mouth to reply, but he cut her off.

"Do Slayers only go for the good guys? Am I not high enough on your list?" he raged on. He was getting angrier by the second; she could see the fury rising up in his cheeks.

"Draco-" but then he did something she never would have thought he would do in a million years. Those beautiful eyes flashed again and turned a feral yellow as he growled, and his features changed. Kathryn gasped ... oh god ... no. She started screaming but he covered her mouth with his hand. They struggled and finally, she overpowered him and threw him across the room.

Draco saw the flash of fear and utter despair in her eyes when he had changed and immediately the fury left him, only desperation was left behind.

"Kathryn, I-" he never got to finish.

"Get the hell away from me! Don't ever come near me again!" she sobbed before rushing past his fallen figure out of the door and out of his life.

"What have I done?"

AN: Hey guys, cliffy huh? I hope you enjoyed that chapter, I really truly enjoyed writing that; I've always wanted to delve into this issue - about a Slayer/Vampire love. I think the 'unnamed' Vampire is pretty obvious, can anybody guess? Okay, well, the next chapter is going to be a couple of dream sequences - you know those premonitions that both Kat and Draco got the first time they met? And I might include how Kathryn got her scar as well, also, it's time to meet the Gryffindor's!

Review Response;

Slytherine_Sweetie; Hey, I read what you wrote about the whole Quidditch and old people thing ... hmm; I sorta thought that her parents were really young when they had her? Coz you know, it wasn't really THAT long ago that ppl were having kids really early, so if he was 18 when she was born then he'd only be about thirty something, that should be okay. And he'd been playing for a while, so he was a really seasoned player and he would have been retiring soon. Is that okay? Email me with any more troubles! Thanks for reviewing as well, that was the longest review I've ever seen in my life! It was great! P.S I'm a Sydneyian! I am an avid train/bus catcher although I have a car. Email me!

Evillian; I'm glad to hear that my fic had an effect on you, I love reading fics that really have an impact on me and it was flattering to read that mine did! So thanks for reviewing and keep reading!

Elsila; Faithful reviewer! Draco didn't know what Lucius did and he invited Kathryn off-hand. As you read in the beginning Lucius was furious! Imagine having a Slayer in his home? She'd kill him for sure! Draco's still at the stage of deciding. Thanks heaps for the review, I hope you keep reading.

AN: I forgot to mention that Kathryn will be taking time to visit Buffy pretty soon, so watch out!
