- Author's Note:
- Dedicated to my girlfriend, Arunika, and to others. You know who you are.
I see you.
You're arrogant, cunning and clever. You have flying skills that are among the best-trained talents of your year, although you had them taught, rather than a natural talent. If Potter or Chang ever had proper training, they would wipe the floor with you. But that's the point is it not?
You have conceit, a very Slytherin trait, but you allow it to blind you. You don't have your father's brains or skill, if challenged; you would fight if you believed that you had a chance of victory, not back down because it would hurt your pride. Do you really think that's important? Bravery is a Gryffindor trait, after all, its also part of Slytherin, but we know when to discount pride and back down, even if we would win, because the cost would be too high.
But you don't.
You don't hide your beliefs or prejudices. How very Gryffindor of you. How many times have you called the Granger girl a 'mudblood'? At least twenty times in her hearing and I've heard you mention it under your breath many more times. You're a bigoted fool, she's becoming powerful indeed, and the balance between you is in her favour, because you don't think and you don't use your talents to their best endeavour. Adava Kedvara is such a simple spell really, all you need is hatred. She hates you, you fool, and one day she'll snap and you'll be blown out of your own body, lost forever.
True Slytherins know better. If I hate, I keep it to myself and plot revenge. Fred and George Weasley, those you mock for being poor (as if they could help it) have far more Slytherin minds than you, I've had joke wars with them throughout most of the time I've been at Hogwarts, they are cunning, skilled and have that fun streak of harmless malice that keeps them joking. We'll need laughs this year. You don't have the patience for such fun diversions, you always need to rush in like a fool - or a Gryffindor - and end up getting treated roughly. When will you learn?
I suppose it could be blamed on your father. Lucius is a hard man to please and you do try so hard, but you've inherited his conceit without the brains. You use his influence to aid you, to become seeker, to learn about the triwizard cup, to try to have an innocent beast executed for your own mistake. But your father's money can't buy everything. Pansy may have lost her virginity to you, but she hates you deep inside, she knows you're not for her. She wants Longbottom, do you know that? Does he?
Your gorilla friends. They can't help you in anything other than brute force. Granger could outthink them, Potter could out magic them, and even Weasley could out smart them if pressed. If it was not for Snape cheating on their exam papers, they would have been expelled by now.
Snape. He cares for you. I don't know if he does it out of respect for your father, who was an old school chum, as far as Slytherins have friends, or out of a desire not to lose another student to Voldemort. He's been trying to reach out to you, but you have little respect for him and therefore he will fail. How ironic. Your Gryffindor traits are preventing the one who could help you find your path to touch you. How sad. Voldemort will have a field day with you.
Voldemort.
Absolute darkness personified. Gryffindor Vs. Slytherin. The old conflict repeating its self over and over again. Grindelwald faced Dumbledore and lost. How, I don't know, Dumbledore won't speak of it, even to me. But, later, Tom Riddle became Voldemort and faced Harry Potter for the first time - and lost.
Oh, Grindelwald, Voldemort, you, don't you see? What did Salazar Slytherin really say? Untrustworthy, he said, about the muggleborn. What does that mean? Not that they were bad wizards, but that they could betray the school to the muggles. Did you never realise that?
I fear for you when Voldemort comes for you, and, if you continue like this, he will. He'll use you as a puppet, like your ever-so-brave dad, who was more than willing to assist in muggle-torturing, but was relieved when Voldemort vanished. Voldemort will kill him for that, eventually, no matter what you do. A true Slytherin would be able to admit that to himself.
But you can't.
I don't know which side will win the war, but I know, as long as you are like this, who will lose. The side you join. Your nature will drag you down and bring others down with you.
I fear for you. I fear for you and those who you have hurt. Will hurt. Its not too late to become a true Slytherin, to be cunning and calculating, to play your cards close to your chest. To develop your natural skills.
But you won't.
The Sorting Hat offers us a choice. You chose Slytherin because you thought that was what your dad wanted. You thought it was cool. You would have done much better in Gryffindor.
Are you sure you made the right choice, Draco?
Please read and review. This is my first fic so please go easy.
