Chapter three
"I'm not so sure that I want to know now!" Harry commented. It was true; he didn't like the sound of it!
"Harry, ignore anything that I have told you about Lord Voldemort being the last remaining heir," Dumbledore said ignoring Harry's comment, "there is another one Harry!"
At first Harry was confused, then he was anxious to find out more.
"How? Who?" Dumbledore held his hand up to stop Harry.
"Those questions, I cannot answer. I don't know how this happened and I have had a talk with the heir and-"
"WOAH! Wait a minute! You had a talk with the heir of Slytherin?"
"Well, yes. He is a pupil at this school after all."
"WHAT! He's here? He could be plotting revenge at this very minute... I could've talked to him! I might've-"
"Harry," Dumbledore said, his voice still friendly, "he is of little threat to you at the present. When Voldemort is killed and he becomes the last heir, then you can start to panic. For now though, you can relax!"
"Relax? RELAX? Now there are two evil buggers out there out to kill me and you want me to relax? One is bad enough thank you very much!" Harry was now on his feet.
"As I told you Harry, he is of little threat to you for the time being! He is in the same position as you."
Harry looked at his headmaster, a quizzical look on his face. "What do you mean?"
"When Voldemort is gone, he will be the last remaining heir, like you. He is sixteen, like you. He has a lot of pressure on him to fulfil his destiny, just like you Harry! He is probably scared of you too; he probably thinks the same things you are thinking! He is more than likely thinking that you are going to kill him. That's one of the reasons why he doesn't want anyone to know!"
"Who is he? I need to know! I promise I won't say a word and I won't do anything to him. I won't even hurt him.... Yet...."
"As I tried to say earlier," Dumbledore was getting impatient now but he didn't show it, "I had a chat with him earlier on this morning and we made a deal that if I kept his secret, he would not do anything to harm anyone. Even you."
"You trust him?"
"Well, yes. He is a person after all. It's not what he is that matters, it's what he does and how loyal he is to his friends. He is like you in more ways than you think! You'd be surprised!"
Harry heaved a deep breath and asked, "When will I find out who it is?"
"When he is ready to tell anyone Harry. He has only known that he is the heir of Slytherin as long as you've known that you're the heir of Gryffindor. Maybe not even that long!"
Harry didn't want to stay for any longer. He told Dumbledore that he had better go and study for the next day. He went to find Ron and Hermione; he had so much to tell them.
"Hermione, could you pass me my drink please?" Ron asked yawning.
"Get it yourself Ron! I'm busy!" she answered.
"OH! But I haven't got the energy to move!"
"Then stop talking!"
" But I'm thirsty!"
"THAT'S IT!" Hermione half shouted as she slammed her book shut and began to walk out the door when Harry came in. "Talk to him!" she pointed over to Ron as she walked out the door.
"What did you do to her this time?" Harry asked sitting beside his friend.
Ron looked pathetic and confused, "I asked for her to pass me my glass of pumpkin juice!" he said pathetically.
Harry slowly raised an eyebrow as if to say, 'say what?' but he then remembered that Hermione does lose her temper more easily when studying was involved. "I'd better get started on my studying,"
"What did Proffy D say?" Ron asked innocently.
"I'll tell you later on when loads of other people can't over hear us! It's strictly confidential for us to know ONLY!"
"Ah!" was all Ron replied until they were swept over by the boredom of studying.
"Cheer up! It's the last day of the exams tomorrow. Why so dismal?" Dominic asked Draco as he shut his Care of Magical Creatures book for good.
"Give me one good reason why I should be happy," Draco replied his voice muffled with his arm as he lay his head down on the desk.
"Give me one good reason for you not to be!" Dominic teased. Draco should've known better than to start this kind of conversation with Dominic. It was just like going round in circles.
"I could give you about ten!" he said raising his head, "but I couldn't be bothered right now, I'm tired!" he lay his head down again.
"Draco, I am sick of you being so negative lately! They are just exams. Chill out!"
Draco looked up. "Who said anything about exams freaking me out? My life just sucks!"
"What's wrong? Tell me! I'm your friend!" Dominic pleaded.
"I'm going to go for a walk," Draco announced ignoring Dominic.
"If it's about that letter you got, I totally understand!" Dominic called after him.
"No, you don't understand. You have known about it for ages! Why didn't you tell me? In fact, I don't want to know the answer. I'm going." And with that, he disappeared out the exit and into the dungeon corridor.
"I couldn't..." Dominic whispered to himself as he walked up to his dormitory.
As soon as Harry and Ron were alone in the common room, when everyone else had retreated to bed, Harry told Ron about what Dumbledore had said.
"He told me that there is another heir of Slytherin after Voldemort!" Harry started. Ron looked a bit scared and opened his mouth to comment but Hermione walked in and got there first.
"WHAT?" she squealed, "but that's impossible!"
Harry turned around at the sound of Hermione's voice.
"That's exactly what I thought but even Dumbledore doesn't know how this came about!"
"Who is it then? We need to destroy it before it finds you!" Ron asked with a note of panic.
"He wouldn't tell me!" Harry said shrugging, Ron looked stunned so Harry explained a bit, "he said that he is of no threat to me until Voldemort is destroyed and that he is a pupil at this school and in our year so he wouldn't try and attack me while Dumbledore is here. Dumbledore made a deal with the heir anyway, if he didn't hurt anyone then Dumbledore wouldn't tell anyone who he was!"
"He trusts an heir of Slytherin?" Hermione asked confused.
"That's what shocked me too! But I trust Dumbledore. If he says that the younger heir is no threat to me, then I believe him!"
Hermione and Ron weren't so sure.
"I'm going to bed," Harry announced heading towards his dormitory.
"So, can I have that drink now?" Ron teased Hermione.
Hermione walked over to the desk, grabbed a glass of pumpkin juice and walked up to Ron. "Sure!" she smiled, as she poured it over Ron's head and set the glass back down on the desk. She grinned evilly at him and walked off towards her dormitory, leaving Ron on his own. Stunned.
As soon as Harry woke up the next morning, he wrote a letter to Sirius telling him that he had talked to Dumbledore about it. Hoping that Sirius would fall for it, he asked him who the heir was. He didn't think that he would but it was worth a try!
When Ron and Hermione got up they headed to the owlery to give Hedwig the letter for Sirius.
Their exams that day were easy enough and that made Harry feel better.
"EXAMS ARE OFFICIALLY OVER!" Ron yelled as he ran out of the astronomy classroom at full speed. Harry and Hermione ran after him. He ran outside onto the grounds and collapsed on the ground panting. Harry and Hermione lay down on the grass beside him.
It was a warm afternoon and very few clouds were in the sky.
"Freedom..... Wonderful freedom!" Ron puffed.
"Yea! We are now free until we have to find out how bad we did in them!" Harry smiled.
"I think I did OK in them!" Came Hermione's voice.
Harry and Ron threw grass at her but they laughed. Hermione didn't laugh. She didn't even move. She didn't seem happy at all.
"What's up Herm?" Harry asked getting concerned.
"Nothing, I'm just glad that I don't have to stay up all night and study."
Harry wasn't convinced but he decided not to interfere.
They walked back in and Harry and Ron went to the Gryffindor common room while Hermione went for a walk around the school to clear her head a bit.
Hermione was trying to find a quite spot to be alone but she could fight against it. She sat down against the wall in the dark, quite corridor and cried. She was so worried about Harry. What if both heirs ganged up on Harry and killed him? She knew that Harry was a great wizard and all but he wasn't powerful enough to take on them both. Hermione couldn't stop crying even when she thought she heard footsteps. She only looked up when she heard a familiar voice talk to her.
"Are you OK? What are you doing up here alone? What's up with you?" It was Draco. Hermione wiped her tears away.
"I'm OK. I'm just... oh you wouldn't understand," She said getting up then realising something, "Draco, you're a Slytherin right?"
Draco looked stunned.
"Last time I checked, yeah!" he answered looking at the Slytherin crest on his robes then from side to side.
"Then you would know about the heir of Slytherin won't you?"
"Yeah, everybody knows about you-know-who! Are you sure you're feeling OK?"
"Nonono! I mean the younger one, the new one. The one that is at this school and in our year! You would know him, wouldn't you?"
"A new heir? I haven't heard anything about it!" Draco lied, "Why do you want to know?"
Hermione suddenly burst into tears again.
"Hey, hey, hey! Calm down!" he said quickly but softly as he grabbed her by her shoulders and turned her towards him, "Why is this so important to you?"
Hermione told him, "There is another heir of Slytherin in our year and I was worried about Harry! They might both attack him at the same time and gang up on him! They might kill him and I don't want that to happen! If we knew who it was, we could stay clear from him and watch out for him but we don't know who to suspect!" she was still crying. Draco didn't know what to do.
"It's OK," He comforted giving her a comforting hug, she cried on his shoulder, "I know what Potter is like and as much as I hate to admit it, he's a great wizard, and he has been through stuff like this before. I'm sure he can handle it no problem!" Hermione stopped crying.
"Thanks, Draco! I really needed that! I know you are only saying that about Harry to make me feel better but it's working!" She was only now realising that they were hugging each other, she smiled secretly to herself.
"Where's Hermione? It's nearly time for dinner!" Ron pointed out looking at his watch.
His question was answered when Hermione came through the portrait hole into the Gryffindor common room.
"Let's go! I'm starving!" she announced seeming more bubbly than she was earlier.
"Where were you?" Harry asked.
"I told you, I went for a walk!" she answered.
"For an hour and a half? Around the school?" Ron asked.
"Yeah! Where else could I of gone?"
"Who cares! Lets go, I'm hungry!" Harry put in before an argument broke out.
"As long as Hermione doesn't pour pumpkin juice over my head again!" Ron sulked.
"Say what?" Harry asked raising an eyebrow. Hermione giggled and ran out of the common room and down to the great hall for dinner.
"She poured pumpkin juice on my head last night!"
"What did you do to her?"
"I asked her for a drink again!"
"Then don't ask her for a drink and she won't do anything to ya!" Harry pointed out smiling, "race ya!"
They set off towards the Great hall at full pelt.
"Right, which one could it be?" Ron said as they all stared over at the Slytherin table looking for the heir.
"Could it be Crabbe or Goyle?" Harry asked.
"Nah! They're too stupid! I mean, they got held back a year for God's sake!" Ron answered.
"... er... Jonny?" Harry tried again. Jonny was very tall, had black hair and grey-blue eyes. He wasn't all that evil or scary looking, he was actually quite friendly looking and not at all 'heir-of-Slytherin' like but everyone was a suspect after all!
"Too clueless, not cunning enough!" Ron answered again. (Author's note- Sorry Jonny!)
"Mmn... Malfoy?" Harry asked again.
Hermione answered this time. "I sense a little deja vous here! We found out it wasn't him in second year!"
"Oh yeah!" Harry realised, "Well, how about Dom-"
Harry was cut short by an explosion from the other end of the Gryffindor table. Seamus had tried to transfigure his fork into a new broomstick for the matches next year, only to result in what he was best at. Blowing things up!
"Nice one Finnigan! Like what you've done with your eyebrows!" Malfoy shouted across the hall at him.
"Yeah! And a nice new hairstyle to go with it!" Dominic followed up. The Slytherins started to laugh.
"Leave Seamus alone you two!" Neville shouted over.
"Or you'll do what Longbottom? Sit on us?" Jonny joined in and all the Slytherins were cheering now. They seemed to think that Slytherin had got a point there. Dumbledore stood up.
"That is enough! Now calm down and either get back to dinner or go back to your common rooms!" He shouted. He didn't sound angry but it was firm.
After a while Harry and Ron went back to the Gryffindor common room with Seamus and Neville while Hermione stayed behind to talk with Lavender and Parvatti.
"You learn to ignore them after a while guys! Just let them have that one! We'll get them back!" Harry reassured his friends.
"We will! Next year in Quidditch! We'll kick their ass!" Seamus punched the air.
"So that's what you think then is it?" They heard Jonny's voice from the bottom of the stairs.
"What makes you think that then?" Dominic's voice followed.
"Well, considering we have won nearly every match against you, I think we stand a good chance!" Seamus shouted down to them.
"What do you mean 'nearly'? Oh yeah! I beat Harry earlier this year and the year before that!" Draco emerged from the Great hall, his voice heavy with sarcasm.
"The score is still three wins to two, Malfoy! There is still next year to go!" Harry stepped in front of Seamus.
"OH! The last Quidditch match against you! This shall be interesting! Just to see your face once you lose will be a prise on it's own, it's your last chance to beat me after all!" Draco jeered.
"We'll see about that!" Ron shouted, "Harry will catch the snitch so fast, you will hardly of had a chance to get off the ground!" Ron turned and walked off and the rest followed, not wanting to stay and argue with the Slytherins.
"What makes him think that he will live to see next year?!" Dominic asked with a note of humour in his voice. He smirked and glanced over at his companions with a raised eyebrow.
Draco grinned weakly in response. He remembered how upset Hermione was earlier about thinking that Harry was going to be killed. What would she be like if it really did happen? He had always wanted Harry out of his life but he didn't want Hermione to be unhappy. What could he do? He couldn't tell Harry about the new heir of Slytherin and his plans with Voldemort to kill him! Could he?
To be continued...
(Hehe! What fun! Before anyone says anything, Jonny is this kool boy at our school that my friends and I have sworn to annoy as much as possible...only because he annoys us! Nah, we're all friends really. Who is the heir? E-mail me at [email protected] with your ideas and I'll say how many are right! But I'm not telling who is! Well OK it gets pretty obvious throughout the story but hey, it's something interesting! Can Hermione and Draco's affection for each other last? How long until people find out? Will either of them admit it? Find out soon!)
