Vengeance; revenge? No. That wasn't it. You lot have it all wrong. I did it because I loved them. I cared about them and wanted to protect them. That's why I infiltrated the Death Eaters' inner circle. It was about protection; an immeasurable amount of love. I never meant their death. It's true, and you know it. I marked my shoulder and sold my soul for them.

My world.

That's what they were. They were my refugee, my own little private world. I could go there whenever things got too rough, whenever they ordered me to kill someone, and I obeyed. It's funny, actually. Thinking about it reminds me they never once noticed the change in my behaviour. They could have saved me then, if only they had watched more carefully. They would have noticed my essence fading out.

My family.

My parents died when I was thirteen years old. Ha. They were confronted by a pack of drunken Death Eaters. Ironic, wouldn't you say? They stuck together with me. They assisted the funeral, and henceforth I became one of them. They became my only true family. I wouldn't kill my family. It's not ethical. Friends, oh, those come and go, but family. Family sticks together when the times get rough. Family survives everything and anything. Well, they survive almost everything and anything.

Power.

Now there's a true reason. Power can break up the closest of families. It has been seen since the beginning of time. The story of Cain and Abel comes to mind. Wouldn't you agree? Families fight each other for control. Dad versus Mum, brother versus sister, children versus parents; they're all fighting each other. They love each other dearly, but they fancy power beyond anything else. The story of your life, oh, yes, I know you've lived this. You know what it's like. You know you can't do anything to stop the human yearning. We're designed this way, to desire, to long for power. And power, well, power brings up other issues.

Confrontation.

This is the part where you can't sleep in your own bed without looking sideways. You can't stand having your family around. They are around because they want your power. You're so consumed by it you don't know or care about anything. Power confronts families. Power corrupts families. Power corrupted me. I can't be held responsible for my actions. It was power who put me up to it. It lured me to the Dark Side and it made me like it.

Good; Evil.

Where do you draw the line, anyway? It is all defined by one's perspective and one's perspective is defined by their position. And their position is defined by their influences. It all comes down to power, if you think about it. You could be the meanest man in the world because you murdered your two best friends, or you could be the evilest man on Earth because you watched a murder, and did nothing to stop it. Either way you're mean, you're bad, and you're loathed. Either way, you're feared. There is no good. There is no evil. There is only manhood, and where it'll finally draw its limitations.

Love.

As I said, I did what I did out of love. I joined the Dark Side to protect them because I loved them. I experienced...I tasted evilness because I wanted to look after them. I wanted to make them proud, because they were my family, my world, and I loved them. So, Harry, before you kill me. I will answer your question. No, I didn't do it out of spite. I didn't do it for vengeance or revenge. I did it because I cared about them. I loved them.

And they didn't love me back.
