Unexplainable Chapter 1

Finally they left me alone. Not that they ever look twice at me but still, at least they didn't want me in their compartment this time. Ginny pulled her trunk behind her as she walked further down the Hogwarts Express. Alone, this is what I was used to, not groups or crowds. Ah! An empty compartment, now if only no one comes looking for me.

Ginny pulled her trunk behind her, closing the door and settling in. She wasn't looking forward to another year of Ron's behavior. He would be so damned over- protective one minute and ignore her existence the next. At least Fred and George left her to her own devices unless she asked for their help. Thank the Gods Percy was finally gone; he had been the worst of all. A good book, that's what I need to keep my mind of my problems. The potions book should do the trick. I love potions even if Snape is a git.

Her pleasant trip was interrupted a few minutes later. She heard a commotion outside and the compartment door slid open. Her eyes widened as she looked up to see Malfoy! Oh hell, what is he going to harass me about this time?

I am so tired of harassing the Golden Trio, but one must keep up appearances. Gods, they made it so easy most of the time; at least I have a store of insults from the past three years. I want to be alone, Crabbe and Goyle are complete idiots and I don't know if I can take another year of them following me like puppies. If I could only find an empty compartment, the gits are just dumb enough to stand 'guard' the whole trip. Finally, the back of the train doesn't seem so crowded. The last one there on the left looks empty. Peeking through the glass, I realized Weasley- the girl one, was in there. Perfect, I haven't harassed her for a long time; maybe she won't make a fuss. I have to make sure the goons don't see her or there will be trouble. Standing with his back to the door he said, "I want to be alone. You two need to stand guard and don't let anyone in. Keep your backs to the door so Potty and his pals don't try anything." They both nodded stupidly as Draco slipped into the compartment. Turning to look at Weasley, he noticed the look of 'what now' on her face. "Settle down, I am not going to curse, hex or otherwise harass you. I just want to be left alone, alright." Opening his trunk, he pulled out one of his Slytherin robes. He tossed it to her, "Put this on to cover your hair."

"Why?" She was confused, why was Draco Malfoy being nice?

Before he answered, he turned to the door and put up a silencing charm. It wouldn't do for anyone to recognize her voice. "Because Weasley, there is no reason for us to harass each other when the time would best spend in other ways."

"Oh really?" Ginny's eyes narrowed, wondering what other ways, he was referring to.

"Get a grip; I am not going to attack you either. Are you going to put the robe on or sit there holding it the whole trip?"

She slid her arms into the robe, tucking her hair up in the hood. "You really aren't just waiting until I let my guard down then?"

He shook his head, pulling out his potions book. Ginny snickered, who would have thought they both enjoyed potions.

"What is so funny?"

She held up her potions book with a smile. Really he didn't seem bad, once you got past the snarky attitude. "Would it kill you to use my name?"

"Ginevra. There are you happy now?" She was smiling at him again, it was very unsettling. What on earth made him think he could ignore her the whole trip? She was actually rather pretty- once you got past the fact hat she was a Weasley.

"Why did you warn Hermione, you know at the World Cup?" She had been wondering about that ever since Hermione had explained what all had happened in the woods.

"Warn her? I didn't warn her about anything. Where did you get an idea like that?"

"Well it seems to me that if you really are a Junior Death Eater, you would have wanted her to get caught. Yet you told them to hurry up and get away. They all took it as you being nasty though."

"A Junior Death Eater, how do you know I'm not a Death Eater right now?"

He was quick, but Ginny was quicker as she grabbed his arm and pulled back his sleeve. "No Dark Mark, that's how I know."

Draco was taken aback at her certainty. Even his house mates figured he already had the mark. Yet this girl, this Weasley, knew the truth. "How do you know the Mark isn't there and you just can't see it?"

"Because I have seen one other Death Eater's Mark; that is how I know."

Draco was extremely grateful that he has put up the silencing charm. If Crabbe and Goyle had heard this conversation, Ginevra would have been in danger. No one outside the Death Eater's and their families were supposed to know about the Dark Mark! Weighing his options, he decided to tell her something that no one knew. "You do realize that if anyone found out we spent the train ride together, it would cause you loads of problems, don't you?"

"Of course I know that. I am not prepared to be harassed every minute of everyday."

"So if I were to tell you something, you wouldn't repeat it?" Insane that is what I am, thinking of telling her my biggest secret.

"I won't repeat it, I swear."

"I don't ever plan on becoming a Death Eater. I realized after my father did something very cruel to an innocent person, that I never wanted to be like him." Shit, I hope she doesn't figure out what I am talking about.

"So tell Dumbledore, he would help you."

"It isn't that simple Ginevra." Looking at his watch he realized that it was almost time for the trolley to come past. "Do you want anything from the trolley?" She was still holding his other arm, he realized.

Ginny blushed and let go. "Mum sent me sandwiches, but thank you for asking."

He looked at her, could this slip of a girl really be so kind? He didn't know girls even blushed anymore. Although the blush just made her prettier. Stop those thoughts, she is a Weasley and I am a Malfoy. Thoughts like that will get one of us killed. "Okay if you are sure. Pull that robe a bit closer around you so I can slip out."

He was concerned for me! Yeah right more likely he was concerned for his reputation. It wouldn't do for Draco Malfoy to be seen with a Weasley. Her brothers would kill him that is if his father didn't get to him first. She listened as he lifted the silencing charm so he could enter the corridor.

"Draco, can we sit with you now? Potty and the Weasel don't seem interested in a fight."

"Yeah, Crabbe and I are hungry."

"I didn't say you idiots couldn't eat, I said you stay out here so I am not disturbed," Draco snarled at them.

He made short work of getting the snacks. He re-entered the compartment dropping an armload of food into her lap. Turning to redo the silencing charm, he missed the look of confusion on Ginny's face. He dropped down into the seat next to her with a smile. She was sitting there, staring at him, wondering what had happened to the real Draco Malfoy and if this one could stay. He pulled his trunk over and helped her put all the food on the top of it. She was still quite confused. Was it possible that none of them had taken the time to look beyond his name? Was Draco really a nice person, even though he was a Malfoy and a Slytherin?

They chatted about everything from potions to Quidditch while he convinced her that he couldn't possibly eat all the snacks. The trip seemed to fly by. Ginny was getting sleepy; she had been up since the crack of dawn getting everything packed. Not realizing what she was doing she leaned over and put her head on Draco's shoulder. He had slung his arm across the seat back while they were talking, which meant he was now holding her. Too tired for any of this to register, she fell asleep.

Draco watched her as she snuggled closer to him. Dressed in his school robe, she looked beautiful. When he was sure she was asleep, he tucked a stray bit of her hair back under the hood. He had no idea how long he sat there, holding her and staring at her. He had pulled her as close to him as possible when he realized she was sound asleep. With his other hand he pulled the robe over her legs. As he watched the sun set, he admitted that Ginevra Weasley was his first true friend. She had broken all the rules, looking past his name and his house. He wondered if there was anyway for them to continue their tentative friendship once they reached Hogwarts. Realizing the time, she gently woke her. They would both have to change soon and she couldn't be seen in Slytherin robes.

She woke slowly, usually waking her was gambling with your life. But she knew Draco was holding her and she felt safe. She snuggled closer as she became awake.

"Thanks," she whispered.

"What for? We will be in Hogsmeade soon, you will have to change."

"Holding me while I slept, being nice to me this whole trip; for looking beneath the surface and seeing the real me."

Draco blushed, which embarrassed him even more. Malfoys do not blush; it was one of the many rules drilled into him. Then again Malfoys aren't nice to Gryffindor's or Weasley's either. It seemed Ginevra wasn't the only one breaking all the rules. "You did the same for me. You do realize that I will have to return to my mean and hateful self once we get to school, don't you?"

Ginny smiled, he looked so cute sitting there blushing from her compliments. "I realize you will have to keep up appearances. Will you try to cut back though?"

"As much as I can but no promises, Potter had been my favorite target since the day he refused my friendship. It would defiantly seem odd for me to leave him alone."

"Friends?" Ginny held out her hand.

"Of course, we will have to be careful about being seen together. Watch for my owl. I will send you messages in the evening...if that is okay."

Ginny threw her arms around him, still covered by his robe. He held her tightly. "Keep the robe; it may make it easier for us to meet up if you wear it."

The train slowed. Draco turned to her. "You go first," she said. "It will be easier for me to slip through the crowd."

He looked at her one last time, he wasn't sure what it was he was feeling for her but it was a foreign feeling. He sighed; it was time to put on the show. At least now he had one person that he could count on.
