Devil's Snare in the Girls Bathroom
Chapter 1
Jakkin Pillburg impatiently stalked impatiently around the Gryffindor common room, waiting for Ron and Harry to put away the chess set and leave. He ran a hand through his messy black hair, and he finally sat down, and glanced at his time piece, and tucked it back away in his robes. Four-Thirty. You'd think they'd get to homework soon! In his boredom, Jakkin half heartedly pulled out his wand, and started playing a game with himself that included flying, crashing textbooks. "Wingardium Leviosa. Accio!" Almost before the last charm left his lips, the book flew over his head and crashed into a window, shattering it. Completely annoyed, Jakkin slouched back, aimed his wand at the window, and muttered "Repairo," just as Prof. McGonagall walked in on her daily checkups on her house.
She noticed Jakkin right away, and let him fix the window before she said, "Mr. Pillburg. I'd hope you'll have my report on advanced transfiguration ready by now I presume?"
Whirling around, Jakkin saw the professor, and put on his face of innocence, and responded, "Well.... you see? The thing with the window is that.... um..." then stopped. "Oh, my essay, yes, it's done." He walked over to McGonagall, and handed her a rolled up piece of parchment. "432 words, full illustrations and diagrams included," he grinned up at her.
McGonagall thought that she detected something wrong. She couldn't place it, but the feeling was there. "Very well Mr. Pillburg, I shall hope you didn't rush, as you know, this is worth one third of your grade." Jakkin just continued smiling, until McGonagall turned and left in a flutter of robes.
When she left, Jakkin turned around to see Ron folding up his wooden chessboard, and Harry putting the pieces in their boxes. He heard Harry say, "I think it's about time we meet Hermione in the library." Ron muttered a response, and when they left, Jakkin strode over to the Place, and glanced around. Sure that no one was watching, he patted his pocket full of sickles and Galleons, and then he reached into another pocket in his robe while stepping into the fireplace. Double checking his surroundings, he stood up in the fireplace, whispered, "Hogsmeade," then threw down his floo power. In a puff of green fire, he was gone.
Chapter 2
Jakkin burst out from the fireplace on Zonko's Joke Shop. He stood up, dusted himself off and looked around. The shop owner that he knew well and a few customers were staring at the unexpected guest. Before long, they went back to there business as if nothing had happened. Jakkin took a quick look around, and decided that he would come back later when he went back to Hogwarts, and use some spare money to buy prank materials.
Jakkin walked out of the shop, and looked around the familiar street. He strolled around, ignoring vendors' shouts, looking for the hooded wizard that usually sold him his floo powder. He was a strange old man, and undoubtedly knew some stuff, stuff that only he knows. But at the moment Jakkin didn't care. He only needed the man because of his unbeatable prices. At last, he found him, about one-hundred yards up from Zonko's. The old wizard noticed him instantly, and called in a crackled tone, "Jakkin, back for some more powder?" Jakkin looked at him very surprised. He didn't remember telling him his name, and he said so. "I know. I know. But I know some things, Jakkin," the old wizard said in amusement.
Jakkin, just getting over his shock, whispered, "Ummm.... Sir, may I know your name? For some reason, when I see you, I keep thinking--"
He never finished. The old wizard cut him off, and finished for him, "Dumbledore? Yes, you are gifted boy, and there are things you will learn... in time. Name is Samuel, but call me Sam. I see something in you Jakkin, something special. Today, I think I will give you your powder free of charge. Jakkin was going to say something, but he was once again cut of. "No questions, no comments. They will all be answered in time. Now go. I will begin to get in touch with you." He shoved a bag of floo powder into the shocked Jakkin's hands, and in a *pop*, disapparated.
Jakkin started walking again, thinking about what Jakkin had said, "You are a gifted boy, and there are thinks you will learn..." While pondering the happenings of the last few minutes, Jakkin found himself beside a small shop that he had never noticed before. Jakkin read the sign, "Exotic Wizarding Plants." He shrugged and walked in, hoping to take his mind off of recent events.
The shop was incredible, even more so than Madam Sprout's green houses. And it did take his mind off of things. Pots with quivering plants in them, strange bushes with purple leaves, and 3 heads full of fangs, but Jakkin's eyes fell on a sign that read, "Light Resistant Devil's Snare Seeds: 4 Galleons Apiece".Light resistant Devil's Snare? Whoever heard of such a thing? Jakkin walked over, and saw a box full orange seeds, about the size and shape of walnuts. He read the description beside the box:
After reading, Jakkin thought he might actually buy one, and think of what to do with it. Then he remembered the Gryffindor Prefect, Janine. Such a winch sometimes he thought. Then a new scheme started to unfold in his mind. "Perfect!" he though, picking up a seed. It was heavier than he had expected, and he carried it over to the counter. The Witch that was keeping the shop looked at him as if he was from Mars, but nonetheless, rang him out. "Four galleons," she said, still eyeing him suspiciously. Jakkin reached into his robe's pocket, and presented the four gold pieces, then slapped them onto the counter.
The Witch wrapped the seed up in parcel after putting it in a little box, and did a little spell so that it was tied up in twine. Jakkin thanked her, and started for the door. Before he reached it, the Shop keeper called to him. "Good luck," she said, still looking at him in that strange way. Jakkin just shrugged, and stepped back onto the street.
He glanced at his time piece and gasped. Almost been 1 hour and a half. He would surely be missed if he didn't get back soon. He hurried back to Zonko's, picked out some fake wands that Fred and George Weasley must've sold to the store, and asked if he could use the fireplace, while longingly remembering that he missed going to the Three Broomsticks for his usual butterbeer. Knowing he couldn't risk going, he stepped into the fireplace after getting the okay from the shop owner and pulled some floo powder from the bag he had. The floo powder suddenly made him remember Samuel. He knew he could think later. He just had to get back now! Holding up the floo powder, be yelled, "Gryffindor Common Room!" and prayed that it would be empty. He threw down the floo powder, and disappeared in a puff of green smoke.
Who is the old man? What did he mean? What did Jakkin plan to do with the seed? Answers will come in future chapters. They may surprise you. Coming soon!
