Chapter One: The Prologue

The night air seemed to thicken as darkness seemed to consume the night. Fear ran through Melanie's body as she ran through the forest, carrying a baby in her arms. She was being hunted down by the baby's father, Augustus. Melanie continued to run as fast as she could but, after a short while she became sore and was not able to run any longer. She knew sooner of later she wouldn't even be able to even walk. No matter what, all she wanted was for her baby not to going into the hands of the man who betrayed her. His voice made her stop in her tracks. Her heart pounded faster and faster as he walked closer towards her.

"Time is up Melanie...hand her over," growled Augustus.

"No, you can't have her!" she exclaimed, holding her baby tight against her chest.

"Don't be a fool...hand her over and you can go freely," he said trying to persuade her. "If not, then I may have to rely on violence."

"Like that hasn't stopped you before, Augustus," she replied coldly.

Under his dark cloak, Augustus clenched his wand in his right hand.

"You have just proven my statement true. Do you honestly think I didn't see your wand in your right hand, Augustus? How dimwitted do you think I am?" she questioned him.

"Damn it Melanie...damn you and your powers," he cursed.

Melanie was amused that he hated the fact that she had 'the sight' which is a very powerful power that not so many Witches and Wizards had.

"What's the matter Augustus...afraid are we?" she asked mockingly.

He clenched his wand tighter and pulled it out from under his cloak, pointing it right at her. Sweat ran down his neck; veins swelling from stress of being mocked.

"What use is my baby to you anyway?" she questioned him again.

"I'm not allowed to share that information with you," he replied coldly.

"Oh try me Augustus...she is my baby I have right to know why the hell you want to take her from me when you didn't bloody well want her before!" Melanie exclaimed. "Why in the bloody hell would I hand over my baby to the man who betrayed me and left me while I was carrying his child?!"

The wind began to pick up blowing Melanie's curly, blond hair. Her light blue eyes were filled with tears. She held the baby even closer to her and began to run further into the forest to get away from him.

Augustus put his wand back into his cloak pocket and ran after her.

"You knew this is how it would end!" he shouted. "If you were the slightest bit smart, you'd hand her over."

Melanie tripped; the baby flew out of her grasp. Augustus pulled out his wand, muttering a quick spell. The baby was suddenly floating in midair. He floated the baby into his arms. Melanie looked up in terror seeing him hold her baby.

"Please, Augustus I beg of you give me back Jennifer," she begged.

"So her name is Jennifer is it?" he asked.

"Yes...her name is Jennifer, Jennifer Alisa," she whispered; tears streamed down from her light blue eyes down to her rosy cheeks.

"She'll be better off without you as her mother," he began to say. "Without you, she won't be held back from what she is descended for."

"And what would that be?" she asked curiously.

"To help start the pure race of only purebloods in the Wizardry community by marrying the son of Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy...who are a very wealthy pureblooded family. The Dark Lord's dream of finally eliminating the filthy half bloods and mudbloods is almost reality," he explained excitedly.

"How could you sell your own flesh and blood to such a wrenched family? The Dark Lord is dead haven't you heard?" she replied.

"He isn't dead," he snapped.

"You can't have her," Melanie said pulling out her wand; pointing the wand at him. "I don't know how I ever thought I loved you! You told me you wanted nothing to do with me or the baby so leave it that way! I don't want you in our lives and neither does she! I don't love you nor will I ever...I hate you Augustus Rookwood!"

"I have enough of your bickering, Melanie!" he said pulling out his wand once again and pointing it towards her.

Melanie was in shock...so much shock that she dropped her wand. Her eyes were open wide with fear.

"Avada Kedavra!" he yelled as green lights shot out of wand.

The green lights hit Melanie right in her chest.

"Ahhhhhh!!!" she screamed, falling onto the ground.

Augustus began to breathe heavily as he put his wand back into his cloak pocket. The baby began to cry loudly. He pulled back the blanket to see the baby's face. She looked just like her mother. Augustus shivered and covered the baby back up. He placed the baby down on the ground and walked over to her mother's dead body. Augustus kneeled beside her body and ran his fingers through her curly blond hair.

"I'm sorry Melanie," Augustus whispered as he kissed her still warm lips.

He got off the ground and picked the baby back up. Augustus began to walk away from the scene but, turned around to see her dead body once more. A tear fell from his eye, but he quickly took his free hand and washed the tear away onto his cloak.

The window panes on the mansion reflected the moon light onto the dark gravel road that lead up to the mansion. Augustus, still carrying the baby under his cloak, made his way up the gravel road. The dark oak door flung open to reveal a small house elf who was wearing what looked like an old flower bag as clothing.

"Master Malfoy has been awaiting you Master Rookwood," squeaked the house elf. "Master Malfoy and his Mistress are waiting for you in the parlor room sir."

The house elf led Augustus through the main entrance hall through another hall which led to many other rooms in the mansion. The first door on the left was quickly opened by the house elf. Augustus walked into the room where there were the Malfoys' sat. Narcissa Malfoy was sitting on the couch nearest to the fireplace was holding a child in her arms. Lucius was sitting beside his wife.

"You're much later then you said you'd be, Augustus," Lucius sneered.

"I- I had to retrieve her from her mother, Lucius," Augustus replied bitterly.

"Excuses, excuses," Lucius said, shaking his head.

Narcissa frowned at Lucius. "Darling aren't you forgetting why you even called for him?" Narcissa said trying to change the subject.

"Of course I haven't forgotten dear...it's just that I don't understand why it would take so long to retrieve the girl?" Lucius muttered to his wife. "But, that isn't why I have called you here for. We are on the account of our children's behalf."

"So you would like my daughter to marry your son?" Augustus questioned him.

"Yes, like we have discussed before my dear friend. Our children will marry one another when they are of suitable age," Lucius replied. He then peered over at Augustus. "Where is the girl?"

Augustus pulling off the part of the cloak that had been hiding the baby to reveal a beautiful curly, light brown haired baby girl who had emerald green eyes and light freckles under her eyes and a little on her nose.

"Oh Lucius isn't she adorable!" Narcissa exclaimed happily. "Draco and her will have such beautiful pure blooded children...don't you agree?"

"Yes, Narcissa she is 'cute' but, back to the matter at hand." He turned to face Augustus. "You won't regret this I promise you. Not only does this help produce more of our kind but, this also gives you even more power then you already had before. You won't have to worry about watching over her and you'll be able to continue your 'work' at the Ministry of Magic without having to raise a daughter." Lucius smiled. "Before we go on Augustus...what is her name? She must have a name!"

"Her name is Jennifer...Jennifer Alisa Rookwood," Augustus replied.

Lucius simply nodded.

"Does this agreement satisfy you, Augustus?" Lucius asked.

"Yes, it does. So all I have to do is hand her over to you then?"

Augustus looked down at his daughter. She had fallen asleep shortly after he had pulled the cloak off of her. He kissed his daughter's forehead and handed his daughter to Lucius.

"You won't regret this, Augustus, I assure you," Lucius said again, taking Jennifer in his arms.

Augustus stood up and then walked out of the room. Lucius looked down at the baby that was in his arms and then he looked over at his own son. Only sixteen years from now, his son Draco would marry Augustus's daughter, Jennifer.
