Prologue

It was in the middle of the first Voldemort War. James Potter and Sirius Black had just graduated from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. James was still dating Lily Evans, something most students thought would never happen. Sirius was dating Julia Fortescue, something much more predictable. Within two years of graduation both couples were married. It was an odd thing to get married during such times, but they loved each other so much, it didn't matter how easy it was for their happiness to be broken apart in the future, now was all that mattered. Both Sirius and James had inherited some money (James, from his parents, Sirius from his uncle), and hardly needed to work. This did not mean they were going to be useless, because they had another thing in common: Their hatred of Dark Arts. Julia's older sister Meredith Dawson and her husband, Luke Dawson, were already in the Order of the Phoenix. Already, there had been many deaths in the war, but that did not deter Black, Potter and their wives from taking the oath to join The Order. Shortly after this, their other friends from school, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew signed up as well.

These men and women knew what they were risking when they joined, and it wasn't long before those risks became real. James soon lost his parents in a battle, thus, intensifying his hatred of the Dark Arts to such an extent, he vowed to personally seek revenge on the Dark Lord. Something which he and his wife succeeded at three times and three times made it out alive.

Tragedy struck for Sirius and Julia only a few months after they were married. Meredith and Luke were killed and their two year-old son, Simon, was orphaned. Julia and Sirius had to take him in, putting a burden on the newly wed couple. Julia became pregnant soon after the boy arrived. About a month later, Lily announced that she, too, was expecting a baby.

One night, in the Potter household, James broke the news to Lily that they would have to go into hiding.

"Voldemort is out to get us, and Dumbledore reckons someone in the Order is a spy for him, someone close to us."

"Wh- but we've already gotten past him three times. Can't we just-"

"I'm afraid it's not like that this time, Lily. We're going to have to go into hiding. Besides, we can't risk another battle, not with, well...you know." He nodded towards Lily's womb. Lily couldn't believe what she was hearing; James didn't want to take a risk? And she did?

"He recommends," James went on "That we use the Fidelius Charm, which means that we enlist a Secret-Keeper, someone we trust to remember our new location and not tell anyone."

"I know what it means, James, I suppose you want to use Sirius?"

"Of course, Dumbledore offered himself, he seemed to think Sirius might not be trustworthy. I told him I would trust Sirius with anything."

There was silence, and then Lily asked:

"Do you think it wise to trust him so blindly?"

"Why not? We're practically brothers! He's nothing like the rest of his family, you know that Lily!"

"Yes, but sometimes I wonder, James...." She trailed off, not being able to think of a better response. "Where are we moving?" she asked next.

"I thought we'd use that small cottage my family owned in Godric's Hollow."

Aside from James's blind trust of Sirius, to which Lily realized she had no real argument, she found nothing wrong with their plan. So, within a few days' time Sirius had been confided in, and the Potters were on their way with moving to Godric's Hollow.

The Potters had been living safely in Godric's Hollow for about a year. During that time, little Paul Black was born (Sirius's son), a month later so was little Harry Potter (James's son). They were beautiful, healthy, babies, both had their fathers' jet black hair, and their mothers' eyes.

**************

One afternoon, in late October, Sirius came to James with an idea.

"You know, James, I've been thinking, you know Voldemort's getting more powerful by the day. I needn't tell you the chaos that's been going. Little Simon, he's only just stopped asking when his parents are coming to take him home. I just think...I just think it won't be long before he finds out about this little... charm we have here."

"It's worked so far, Lily, Harry and I have been safe and sound for about a year," replied James.

"I know, but, I dunno, some instinct tells me it won't last."

"Some instinct?" James raised an eybrow.

"Just hear me out will you? Maybe, we should make Peter the Secret Keeper. James let me finish, it will make sense I promise! If you want to know the truth, I'm considering going into hiding myself." he said as James gave another weird face, at making Peter a Secret Keeper. It straightened out at this last news.

"So, everyone knows I'm the Secret Keeper now right? You know that's makes life very risky for me since Voldemort is so interested in getting you. Not that I have any objections to that of course. Well, what if we made Peter the Keeper? I mean, Voldemort would never think we'd choose someone like him and I get the feeling Peter isn't exactly the kind of talent Voldemort would employ for himself. So this way, Voldemort goes for me, my family will be in hiding, and Peter will be the real keeper! Well, what do you think?"

James considered for a while. It didn't sound like a bad plan now that he heard it, and it was true, Sirius was in some danger, and if Sirius was in danger that meant he and Lily were too, and Harry....

James soon agreed to the plan, and Peter was secretly made the new Secret Keeper.

One night, a week later, Sirius made an appointment to check up on Peter, just to see how he was doing. Julia decided to stay at home with Paul and Simon that night. As Peter lived in a Muggle neighborhood, Sirius thought it was best to use his flying motor-bike to get there since that would be much less conspicuous than Apparition.

As Sirius walked up the steps to Peter's house he felt a strange feeling, as though something wasn't quite right. No one answered when he knocked on the door. When he called out there was still no answer. Finally, losing patience and still thinking how unlike Peter this was, he pulled out his wand and muttered:

"Alohomora" The door opened. There was clearly no body at home. He wondered at first, if Peter had been attacked, yet there was no sign of a struggle. Something was wrong. He wondered if the Potters might know anything about this. He went back outside, it was late and getting rather dark, he climbed onto his motorcycle, put a Disillusionment Charm on it, and flew up, towards Godric's Hollow.

What he saw when he got there, made his heart nearly stop.

The house was in ruins. There was debris everywhere and Muggles were crowding around. But this was not the worst of it. As Sirius walked a little closer to the devastated house he saw the worst sight he'd seen in his life.

James and Lily's bodies were lying, dead. Baby Harry was on the floor, crying. Sirius noticed a rather large, mysterious, lightning-bolt shaped scar on his head.

He understood what this meant immediately. Peter had betrayed them. Sirius had been so confident that Voldemort would never use someone as stupid and talent-less as Peter, but he had been wrong. White hot anger coursed through Sirius, he felt ready to kill that stupid, weak rat. Oh he should've known, it all made sense now, of course it did, it was even symbolic, it was obvious. But as that anger and frustration pulsed through him, and as he thought about the situation more, he began to understand the other meaning as well. Despite what he knew, everyone in the Order thought he was the Potter's Secret Keeper. They didn't know about the switch. They would think he had betrayed them. He would have to run. He walked a little further towards the house and bent down to pick up little Harry. Maybe he would have time to get back home, give him to Julia, and then make his escape.

Suddenly he heard heavy, gruff breathing behind him. He turned around.

It was only Hagrid, pushing through the Muggles to get to the house, although it was a bit more like bowling them over.

"'Lo Sirius" he said, gruffly. "Yeh've heard?"

"Err, yea I have. It's horrible..." Sirius trailed off, he looked nervously at Hagrid. Hagrid didn't know anything about the Keeper business. Thank Merlin.

"'orrible! That don't cut it!" He said, heavily, "I'd never met nicer people than them! It's such a shame!"

Sirius took a deep breath, he put a hand on Hagrid's back. He didn't say anything.

"I s'ppose ih jus' hasn't 'it me yet." He said, continuing "Mind you, when it does I'll be lookin' much worse."

At least that was one good thing about having to leave so soon, he'd seen Hagrid sob before, after other deaths, it hadn't been pretty.

"There is good news though," He said, his voice clearing up. "You-know-who's gone! No one knows why or how, but he's gone! It seems somethin' about youn' Harry here stopped him. Inn't that weird?" Said Hagrid, as he scooped Harry up in his arms.

So that explained the scar.

"Yeah, weird," Sirius said quietly.

"Listen, err, nice talkin' to yer Sirius, but I 'ave me orders from Dumbledore. I gotta bring young 'arry 'ere to his aunt and uncle."

This woke Sirius out of his daze a little.

"No, Hagrid please let me. Let me take him, I'll bring him to Julia, we're his godparents."

"Sorry, Sirius, but I got me orders from Dumbledore. Yeh'd have to take it up with him."

Sirius's heart sank. So there went that idea.

"Where are his aunt and uncle anyway?"

"Surrey. Yeah, it'll be some distance."

"How about-how about you take my motorbike? I won't be needing it. I'll just Apparate home."

Hagrid raised his eyebrows at this offer. He knew how attached Sirius was to his motorbike; it seemed odd that he was giving it away like this.

"Are yeh sure?" asked Hagrid.

"Yes, positive. Here, I'll put an Engorgement Charm on it for you and you can just fly it to Surrey. It won't run out of fuel, trust me. I gotta get home."

Julia understood. She had heard about the Potters in the Daily Prophet and she understood what it all meant. Sirius had to leave. He might never even come back. They hugged and kissed, and she promised to keep his secret. If members of the Order showed up, she'd tell them he'd gone out a while ago, she'd play innocent. Sirius left the house with only one thought on his mind.

By the next morning, he'd succeeded in hunting Peter down in a Muggle street.

"Lily and James, Peter, how could you?" Sirius said in a dangerous, quiet voice, anger filling him.

"LILY AND JAMES, SIRIUS! HOW COULD YOU?" Peter shrieked, much louder than Sirius. Practically the whole street heard him, some looked around briefly but shrugged and went back. Sirius stood, looking at Peter, he raised his wand, but Peter was faster. Peter pointed his wand behind Sirius and shouted a curse Sirius had never even heard before. Suddenly, he felt the ground shake; he could also hear people screaming behind him. He turned around to see a chasm in the middle of the street, so deep the water pipe at the bottom was visible. There were bodies of Muggles lying dead. He whipped around, but Peter was gone, all Sirius could see was a bloody finger lying on the ground. He turned again and saw a rat, scampering away into the sewer. It was the precise moment, when Peter disappeared underground that ministry hit wizards began to Apparate. Sirius was shortly arrested and charged with the murder of 12 muggles and being a Death Eater. Naturally, there was no trial. Barty Crouch saw to that.

The day soon came to see Sirius off on the train to Azkaban, Julia was there along with Paul and Simon. Sirius looked at his children. Paul was just over a year old, and Simon...Simon was only three. What were they going to do?

"Don't worry about me Sirius." Julia said, as though reading his mind.

"I do worry about you. Oh Julia...."

They hugged a hug that seemed to last forever. Eventually, they finally broke away. Sirius bent down, level to his sons.

"Simon, take care of your mother and brother for me, will you? Paul, please be a good boy. I love you both." He kissed both boys, Simon clung to his father for a while, a sort of soft pleading in his eyes. He had one last, very long embrace with Julia. It was only when the Dementors began to pull them away that they had to let go. As he walked backwards, towards the train, he felt the tears in his eyes and could seem them reflected in Julia's too. 'I'm innocent,' he thought, 'I'm innocent, I didn't kill those people'. He repeated the thought to himself as he boarded the train and waved good-bye to his family.

Within the next weeks, Julia filed for divorce. But not out of lack of love, it was done more to save face and to have the option of remarriage than anything else. She then sold their house in the country and moved in with her parents above their ice-cream shop in Diagon Alley. She got a job at Obscurus Books, the publishing company known especially for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Remus hung around, more as a shoulder for Julia to cry on than as a real help. He generally kept his distance. 3-year-old Simon took over as the "man of the house"; he did all that his mother was unable to do while she was at work. This included everything from changing his brother's diapers to bathing him to feeding him. They were not chores Simon resented; indeed, he often pushed his grandparents away when they tried to lend a hand because he liked doing them so much. They did all they could anyway.
