"Oh come on! You know that I'm right, Mum!" shrieked Petunia Evans. Her blonde hair was hanging around her neck, swishing madly as she stamped her foot. "She's a freak, and I don't want to live here any longer if she still is! You know she is Mother, don't give me that look!"

"I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ANY MORE OF YOUR COMPLAINING!" yelled Mr. Evans, storming into the kitchen where Petunia was yelling at her mother. "I am tired of you picking on your mother about this, just because she is a little lenient with you and Lily! Stop it! Lily's not leaving this family; she was born into it. My suggestions to you are that you either get used to your sister being here, or you move out. You're old enough. Go and think about it." Petunia stared in disbelief, then smirked.

"I'm over eighteen; I don't have to listen to you."

"My roof, my rules. Upstairs, now," he said, pointing down the hall. Petunia scowled and stormed out of the kitchen. A pale, wet-faced Lily walked quietly and slowly into the kitchen. Her mother was instantly at her side, rubbing her back gently.

"It's all right, we all love you. Even your sister," she cooed, trying to comfort Lily, and failing miserably.

"Didn't you just hear her? She hates me!"

"Come on, time for bed. You've a train to catch in the morning," her mother said, gently pushing her down the hallway and up the stairs. Lily trudged down the hall and up the stairs, into her room in the attic. She stopped dead in her tracks. Petunia was standing in the doorway to her room.

"Move," she said coldly.

"You'll never fit in," she whispered as she moved aside and down the stairs.

Lily proceeded into her room and shut the door so hard that the windows rattled. She grabbed her trunk and heaved it next to the door. She then slipped out of her clothes and into her pajamas, then grabbed her Transfiguration textbook. She climbed into bed, not taking her eyes away from the page she was on. She looked up only when a black owl flew into her room. It had yellow eyes that followed her as she set down the book and trudged over to take the letter it had clasped tightly in its beak.

"Let's see, who do you belong to...ah, Remus got a new owl," she said, taking heed of Remus' name on the outside of the parchment. She opened it, and read it silently.

Lily,

How are you? I haven't heard from you since July! I believe you were on vacation for a month, but still, I haven't heard from you in ages it seems. Not much is going on here. I'm owling you from James' house. It's more of a hotel, or a mansion...or a castle. It's very spacious. Of course, Sirius is still being his loud talkative self, Peter is being funny without knowing he is, and James is reading up in Transfiguration so he can make sure to be better than you next year again. Sad, but true. I'm actually quite bored to tell you the truth. James and Sirius are playing muggle cards, poker I believe it's called, and Peter is sleeping like a baby. Snoring like a pot-bellied pig, but still sleeping soundly. You wouldn't believe the noise he's making, it's actually quite amusing. Ha, Sirius just folded when he had a very good hand, and James had a pair of fours...quite funny. Of course, Sirius won't hear the end of it at school from James, him being...well, him. James is still pining after you, by the way. I'm technically not supposed to let anyone know this, but I'll tell you anyway. Well, let me ask you this; are you extremely emotional about all of these guy-likes-girl-but-girl-hates-guy-and-guy-does-something-really-stupid things? Write back.

Sincerely yours,

Moony

Lily smiled at the last part. She could never figure out where they got their nicknames from, because Remus would never tell her. But, she vowed to him that she would find out before she died. Remus then said that the day she found out would be the day that she fell in love with James, which, in other words meant never.

James Potter. She hated that name. She also hated the person who carried that name. James Potter was an arrogant, self-centered git in Lily's opinion. He also was the most persistent person she knew. He had asked her out every school day since the middle of third year. She said no every time. He had virtually three best friends among his throng of admirers and other friends who knew him, but he hadn't a clue that they were his friends, much less their names. His three best friends were Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew, and Remus Lupin.

Sirius Black was the 'heartthrob' of seventh year. Shoulder length dark hair, brown eyes, very cute, Lily would admit. He was also the most loud and annoying, apart from James. He was incredibly selfish, very egotistical, loved his hair more than he loved his own mother, and had probably been with over fifty percent of the girls at Hogwarts by the time he was fifteen.

Peter Pettigrew was the follower of the group. He admired James and Sirius the most for their intellect and popularity, but was very nice all the same, although he tended to stare at Hilary a lot. Actually, he talked about her a lot too, and wrote letters to her, and tried to carry her books for her, and followed her, and...well, kind of stalked her.

Remus Lupin was most definitely the most sensible of the four, and also one of Lily's good friends. She had met him on the train the first day, and they had hit it off right away. He was very logical, although that part of his brain seemed to leave him whenever it came time for them to prank someone. He did worry Lily though, because he got sick all the time, and she knew that one's grandmother could only die...once. But she didn't press the issue, thinking that it would eventually stop, or that he would tell her.

Lily reached into her drawer and pulled out a quill and an ink bottle. She dipped her quill into it, and began to write on the back of the parchment.

Remus,

There's not much going on here either. I wish I had someone here though, all I have to do is...well, study Transfiguration so I won't absolutely die this year. Sounds like you're having an all right time at the Potter Estate anyways! I would've never thought that Peter snored! That's funny. And no, I'm not very emotional on the subject of guy-girl stuff, you can tell me. See you on Sept. 1st!

Much love,

Lily

She smiled, satisfied with her work. 'I hope James has a heart attack when he reads the end...'
