Sirius Potter had been so jealous when his older sister had gone to Hogwarts. He was eight years when Lily left on the Hogwarts Express; he'd been extremely lonely without her around. His dad told him loads of stories about Hogwarts, but that only made him more impatient to go.

Now he was sitting in a compartment on the Hogwarts Express with his sister and his friends. Lily's friends had seen him as cute at first, but were now ignoring him as they chatted. Sirius had always been shy. Lily was the complete opposite. She loved being the daughter of the famous Harry Potter. She loved the attention and the popularity. Sirius had sometimes overheard his parents talking about letters sent to them from Hogwarts about Lily's behaviour. She was slacking in class and bossed the other students around a lot. She had let the fact she was the daughter of the Boy Who Lived go to her head.

Sirius stroked Merlin's feathers gently with one finger through the bars of his cage. Merlin was the offspring of Harry's owl Hedwig. It seemed fitting somehow that the two of them should go to Hogwarts together. Apart from his sister and his elder cousins, Merlin was the only friend Sirius had.

"Appleby, Simon," called Professor Flitwick. A small blonde haired boy stepped forward to be sorted. It was only a few seconds before the Sorting Hat screamed,

"HUFFLEPUFF!" Sirius was terribly nervous. The Sorting Ceremony had only just started and yet he felt that everyone in the room was looking at him, waiting. The Great Hall was bigger than Sirius had imagined it, no one had told him about the floating candles. His sister and cousins were all sitting at the Gryffindor table waiting eagerly. He looked along the staff table. He could see Auntie Hermione, who gave him a warm smile.

He recognised some of the teachers, but not all of them. He knew the Headmaster, Professor Snape from what his father had told him about him. After both McGonagall and Dumbledore retired, Snape became Headmaster and Flitwick Deputy Headmaster. Sirius' eye scanned the rest of the table. He spotted Hagrid, who had always been like a grandfather to him. Sat next to Hagrid was Professor Lupin, who occasionally visited Harry and Ginny. A few chairs away was Uncle Neville, well Professor Longbottom he would have to call him now. Neville had got tired of the stress within the Ministry and took the job of Herbology teacher. Sirius was so busy recognising teachers he only just heard Professor Flitwick call his name.

"Potter, Sirius." The whole room really was looking at him now. He walked timidly to the stool and was handed the Sorting Hat by Professor Flitwick. He placed it carefully on his own head. A little voice began whispering in his ear,

"Hmm, ah yes, young Mr. Potter. Definitely like father like son. There's courage, but it's buried. Not that deeply mind, all you need is some support to help it surface. Well there's only one thing for it, GRYFFINDOR!" There were cheers from the majority of the hall. Sirius joined his sister and his cousins at the Gryffindor table. The twins both ruffled his hair as they cheered. Sirius could tell people were excited by the fact he was the son of Harry Potter, whether or not he could live up to it was another matter.

The next day, Sirius sat in the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom next to the rest of the Gryffindor first year boys. He had yet to make proper friends, he only knew the boys in his dormitory by name. There was David Carp and Luke Gardener, both Muggle born. There was also Michael Wood, son of Oliver Wood, and Scott Finnigan. It was Sirius' first day of actual lessons, so he had plenty of time to get to know people.

Professor Lupin used the lesson to introduce to what they would be studying in his lessons. He showed them slides of some of the strange and wonderful creatures they would be studying. He also demonstrated some of the spectacular spells they would learn. He had them hooked for the whole year. As the lesson ended and the others filed out of the room, Remus wandered over to Sirius, who was still packing his things away.

"So Mr. Potter, how do you find Hogwarts? Having any problems?"

"Not really, it's been kinda hard making friends."

Lupin smiled. "Well that won't be a problem. You seem to be very much like your father and your grandfather for that matter. Has anyone ever told you that you look just like them?"

"Only every teacher I've had today," said Sirius sheepily.

Lupin laughed. "Well, you've got their sense of humour as well. They made some very good friends at Hogwarts. I'm sure you will as well. Now run along, or you'll be late for Potions." Sirius smiled as he left the room.

"Queen to E5," said Henry as he finally creamed his twin brother at wizard chess. They both inherited their father's talent for the game, so between the two of them a match usually took hours. In a rare turn of events, Henry had managed to win in a few minutes. Donald sat on his own reading by the fire in the Gryffindor common room. Apart from Lily and a few of her friends chatting, the common room was empty.

"Did you see Snape at the feast yesterday?" asked Jonathan, trying to get his elder brother's attention. Donald carried on reading.

"You could tell he was pissed off. Being headmaster and still having to teach Potions? Serves him right, the git!" Donald put his book down. He had always been annoyed by his brothers, but now as Head Boy it became a serious problem to him.

"Professor Snape is taking on extra responsibilities due to difficult circumstances. He has been unable to find a replacement Potions Master."

"Doesn't stop him being a git," muttered Henry.

"Speaking of Snape and potions, shouldn't Sirius be back from his lesson with Snape? It's the last lesson of the day."

"You worry too much bruv," said Henry, "I expect Sirius went exploring the school grounds with his little friends." The portrait entrance to Gryffindor tower opened and Sirius walked in. Keeping his head down he half ran to the stairs to his dormitory. Henry could see what his brother's hadn't.

"Didn't you see that? He was close to tears!" Donald abandoned his book and went straight to Sirius' dormitory. Lily had barely noticed Sirius' entry at all. Donald found his young cousin alone in his dormitory. The other boys were indeed out exploring the grounds. Sirius was sitting on his bed with the curtains drawn. Donald could hear him crying, Sirius had always been a sensitive child. Donald drew back the curtain and sat down next to his cousin, who did his best to stop crying. He hated it when people saw him cry.

"You okay, Sirius?" Donald instantly realised what a stupid question that was. Of course he wasn't okay, the poor kid was crying. Sirius dried his eyes with his sleeve and nodded but Donald wasn't convinced. "You want to tell me what happened?"

Sirius sniffed. "It was P-P-Professor Snape. I w-w-went to his l-lesson..."

"Come on now Sirius, calm down first. I can't help you unless you calm down." Donald allowed Sirius some time. After a minute Sirius looked up at the cousin he had admired for so long.

"I went to Potions; I was a little late because Professor Lupin wanted to talk to me. Professor Snape said that was no excuse and took ten points from Gryffindor. He gave us a potion to brew ... I only spilled a little bit of the powdered beetles. Professor Snape said to see him after the lesson."

"What did he say?"

"He said I had no regard for the rules, just like my father and my grandfather. He called me a troublemaker and said that my dad was the same. He said he wouldn't put up with my arrogance for long and the only reason an idiot like me was in Hogwarts was because I'm the son of Harry Potter. I tried to apologise for spilling the powdered beetles but he just he just shouted 'Get out you useless boy!'"

Something surged through Donald that he hadn't felt before. The rational thing to do would be to tell Sirius to ignore what Snape had said, but Snape had crossed a line.

"Don't worry, Sirius. You're not useless. It'll be alright." Donald rose, went down the stairs and towards the portrait entrance.

"Hey, where are you going?" asked Jonathan.

"To have a word with the Headmaster," Donald said bluntly. He stopped by Lily and her friends. He leant forward. "Your brother is up in his dormitory in need of some support. If you're not too busy," he said coldly. Without another word he left Gryffindor tower.

Author notes: I hope this one was a bit longer than usual, I've had a lot of people saying my fics should be longer. Occasionally I'll write a really long fic, but if I make it too long I find that I start to waffle on a bit, pretty much like I'm doing right now. I hope you found this dramatic, to see if Snape gets what he deserves, look out for Like Mother Like Son, coming soon to a PC screen near you!
