Author's Note:
I always said I would never write this kind of fic. Nah well, you gotta go where the Muse takes you, right? Much love to Cronje for beta-ing.

It Looks Like Rain

Hermione angrily brushed away the tears silently streaming down her cheeks. The man in the driver's seat looked at her in the rear-view mirror, but said nothing.

She stared out the window, watching the light around her grow as the sun rose. And as the city around her began to wake, Hermione had an awakening of her own.

She began sobbing out loud, no longer caring what the taxi driver thought of her. How could she care, when her heart was broken?

Her whole life, Hermione had wished and hoped to meet a great guy and fall in love. Although everyone expected her to fall for Ron or Harry, she knew that would never happen - they were her family, nothing more and nothing less. But the closeness she felt with Harry and Ron only exacerbated her desire to find someone to love.

Even though she knew it was kind of silly, she would wish on stars and pray to whoever was listening, hoping to find someone. Clearly, Hermione now thought with a sob, I should have added some fine print.

Hermione had gotten her wish. She had fallen in love.

The previous night, she had gone to Remus's house for dinner. A friendly meal between good friends. And they had a great time; laughing, talking, drinking and eating. As the hours ticked by, Hermione could feel herself being more and more drawn to Remus. And she could tell he was feeling the same way.

And then it happened. He kissed her. It was amazing; the kind of kiss that makes you light headed and sends tingles down your spine. They stumbled to his bedroom, never breaking contact.

Later, as Hermione lay in Remus's bed, tangled in his arms, she realised that he was the one she had been looking for the entire time. Remus was the answer to every wish and every prayer she had made - he was everything she always wanted.

She smiled at him, lightly tracing her fingertips over his face as he slept. He stirred, though he didn't wake, and mumbled, "Tonks."

Hermione froze. She lay there immobile, her hand still on his cheek, having absolutely no idea what to do.

Biting down on her lip in the hope it would stifle her tears, Hermione quickly and quietly extracted herself from Remus's arms and climbed out of his bed. She dressed in silence, all the while keeping a subtle watch on the man in the bed. She couldn't help it - it broke her heart to look upon someone she loved, who didn't love her back, but she couldn't tear her eyes away.

There was a notepad on the bedside table. Hermione moved over to it, intending to write a note to explain her absence when Remus awoke. But when she held the pen and paper in her hand, no words came.

What on earth can I write? Hermione wondered. Dear Remus, Mere moments after I realised you were the love of my life, I also realised you were still in love with Tonks. I couldn't bear to stay in your arms when I knew it was all a lie. I love you, Hermione.

She put down the blank paper and, after one last glance at a still sleeping Remus, walked through the door.

Hermione stood on the edge of the street, disoriented and numb. A taxi pulled up and the driver rolled down his window and asked if she needed a ride. She nodded vaguely and got into the back seat of the car, giving the driver her address.

"It looks like rain," the taxi driver said, bringing Hermione from her reverie.

She turned to him. This is London! her mind screamed. Of course it looks like it's going to rain!

But instead of saying that, she merely wiped away yet another tear and said, "Yeah. Yeah, it does."
