Why Magical Folk Have Such Small Families

"Harry... what are you doing?" Ginny pushed Harry off of her.

"Well... this is what married people do," he responded slowly. "I know you wanted to wait, and I'm really glad we did, but this is our wedding night. I didn't think it would be a problem."

"But..." Ginny seemed genuinely confused. "You don't want to have a baby right away, do you? I thought we talked about this and decided to have some time to ourselves first, you know, have some fun, get to know each other better."

"We did! And so I thought you would have taken care of protection."

"What kind of protection?"

Harry tried to remain calm. This was his bride. His Ginny. His One and Only. She wasn't always the pointiest wand in the box, but he loved her. "So you don't get pregnant. Didn't your mum tell you about this? Muggles have a pill they can take. Don't you have a potion or charm or something?"

"Not that I know of," she replied, a bit defensively.

Harry sighed deeply. "Okay, tomorrow I'll buy some condoms, but for tonight, I'll be really careful." He leaned over her again, covering her face with tender kisses. "I won't ... you know ... let it go too far. I really want to make you mine..." He put one leg over her again.

Ginny pushed him back. "But Harry! What are you talking about? As soon as you ... put it in ..." she said meaningfully, "it'll be gone and I'll be pregnant!"

Now it was Harry's turn to be confused. "Gone?"

"You mean you really don't know?"

"Know what?"

"About what happens when a witch and a wizard have sex?"

"Uh... aside from having a really good time?"

"Harry..." Ginny laid her hand on his arm as if breaking bad news to him. "When a wizard and witch have sex, the man's ... part ... comes off. It stays in the witch and grows into a baby."

There was silence while Harry ran that past himself. Then he giggled. "No it doesn't!"

"Well, I don't know about Muggleborns, but for fullblooded wizards, it does."

Harry looked at Ginny's face. She was dead serious. He laughed again. "That's ridiculous! That sounds like something your parents told you to keep you from having sex. That can't be true. Otherwise... how come some families have more than one child?" He triumphantly pointed out the flaw in her theory.

"Well, aside from cases where a witch has children by more than one father, some wizards, rarely, have two."

Harry thought for a moment. Then he gaped.

"Two... parts?!"

Ginny shrugged. "It happens."

"Wait... you have six brothers. Are you not all Arthur's?"

"Oh, we are." She looked at him with solemn eyes.

"So you mean..."

"Apparently he's something of a medical curiosity. But let's not talk about my father, it spoils the mood."

Ginny cuddled up against Harry and sighed contentedly.

Harry patted her shoulder absently. Maybe he could take up golf.
