Author's Note:
This is the first Romance fic I’ve done so I’d love constructive comments from anyone and everyone. D/G is a favourite pairing of mine, and I’ve only recently got up enough courage to start and put my ideas down on paper. Read and enjoy!

The Fire Begins To Burn

The pupils all filed into the Great Hall for the feast that evening. The room was looking as beautiful as always. There were candles floating just above their heads, which cleverly moved out of the way as people moved through the hall. The Sorting had already been completed by the time Draco arrived, late and wheezing from having run all the way from the dungeons. He stopped just outside the doors, catching his breath and organising his robes. He then opened the doors and walked in. The long tables were set out as he had remembered, and all of the students were watching him walk to his place.

The feast was nearly over, all the plates were empty and Dumbledore was standing at the top end of the Hall addressing the pupils. As Draco walked in, Dumbledore nodded and smiled at him, saying, ‘Now that we are all present, I would like to welcome you all to another new year at Hogwarts. As you all know, we won the Triwizard Tournament last year and set a series of events in progress. I want you all to do your best this year, and above all, do not venture outside the castle at night. The punishments the rest of the professors and I will give out will be nothing when compared with what the consequences could be. Voldemort…’ Here all of the people sitting in the hall shuddered with the exception of a few Slytherins and Harry. ‘Sorry, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has risen again and this castle could well be under his gaze. I urge you all to be careful, but above all I want you to learn as much as you can. Defence Against the Dark Arts classes will be doubled in length, and this time will be taken from the Potions and Herbology lessons.’ Snape and Neville both looked downcast at this point, but Harry and Ron grinned madly at each other. Draco saw Ron’s lips form the words ‘No more Snape and the Slytherins!’

Dumbledore continued, ‘I myself will be taking these classes. Have a good year everyone. Your time is now your own, you may stay and partake of some more of this excellent food or you may leave for your houses.’

The girl from his dreamsÂ’ eyes followed him, seeming to burn into him as he sat down.

When he had taken his place, he looked up and met her eyes. As their eyes locked, the hall and the people seemed to fade out around him, and he was back in the classroom with her.

‘Kiss me, Draco’ she whispered into his ear. ‘I’ve missed you, us, and this.’ As she spoke that final word, she inclined her head down so her lips met his again. ‘Draco, how is this going to work?’ He shook his head as if to say, ‘ it doesn’t matter’ and kissed her again. ‘No, really, Draco,’ she said, pulling away from his touch, ‘I don’t know, I just don’t know Ginny’.

There was suddenly a shout from beside him. Crabbe was standing up and looking angrily at Draco.

‘How dare you? How dare you call me Ginny? Do I look like a Ginny?’ Then Crabbe noticed where Draco’s eyes were gazing. ‘Oh no, Draco… hello?’

He waved a hand in front of his face, then pulled his arm and dragged him off towards the Slytherin Common Room. The last face he saw in the Hall was GinnyÂ’s looking troubled.

As they arrived in the dungeon room, Crabbe looked at Draco. ‘What kind of sick mind have you got Draco?'

‘What? I don’t get it. How has my mind suddenly been classified as sick? And how dare you talk to me like this? I’ll tell Professor Snape it was you who raided his storeroom last year. ’

‘You wouldn’t Draco, anyway, he’s only going to want to know why, and I’ll have to tell him that it was for your little Polyjuice experiment.’

‘Ok, ok, I won’t tell him anything. So, how is my mind sick then? Are you going to tell me or not?’

‘Ginny Weasley? Ring any bells?’

‘That Muggle-loving twit? What has she got to do with anything?’

‘Hmm, let me think, perhaps she was the reason that you didn’t eat any dinner tonight?’

‘Don’t be stupid Crabbe, please use your common sense, if you’ve got any. I don’t see what she’s got to do with anything.’

‘Well, you couldn’t seem to keep your eyes off the twit-loving-twit.’

‘Don’t call her a mug… Oh, I see. Ginny. Yes. Hmm. What do I do? You’ve guessed what’s going on, what do I do? Do you think she might…’

‘No, Draco! You hate the Weasleys. They’re practically Mudbloods. You’ve said that yourself so many times. What changed?’

‘My mind, Crabbe, my mind.’ Saying that he left the dungeons, and wandered towards Gryffindor Tower. Crabbe sat there, sadly shaking his head at the now empty doorway.

As this was going on, back at the hall, Ron turned to Harry, whispering to him, ‘ I have to get out of here, need to talk to you.’ Harry and Ron both left the hall. As they passed through the Entrance Hall, Ron turned to Harry.

‘Well, did you see him? Draco flaming Malfoy, staring at my sister like she was a big bit of chocolate cake! Let’s go pound him, no, better yet, we’ll get Hermione to pound him… where is she anyway?’

‘She went to the common room, which is where we should be heading for as well,’ Harry answered.

‘Oh, right.’ they turned to go to the Gryffindor Tower.

As Draco got near to the Gryffindor common room, he heard Ron and Harry coming around the corner.

‘Did you see? Did you see the look on his slimy face?’ Ron’s voice was loud and angry, cutting the air like a knife. ‘ My sister, Merlin’s beard, she’s only fourteen, FOURTEEN!!!’

‘Okay, Ron, I get it. She’s fourteen, way too young for the Slytherin creep. What if I wanted to go out with her?’

‘You want to go out with her? That’s great! Oh…’ Ron’s voice tailed off. ‘Okay, so I can’t hold the age thing against him, but he’s in Slytherin, probably has a special fireplace for the Dark Lord. There’s no way, I’d slit his throat before I let him even look at her.’

‘Ron, you’d gladly slit his throat anyway.’

‘True, but…this is Ginny, this is my little sister…’

‘I know Ron, I know. Anyway, she might not have noticed him…’ Draco could hear the voices coming closer so he darted round the back of a pillar and let them walk past him, straight up to the wall opposite.

‘Oh, she noticed, I could see her little smirk, the one that she thinks makes her look really cute… I can’t believe it; my little sister wants to go out with You-Know-Who’s sidekick. I can just hear him now… "My Lord, I have deleted your Fireplace from my Floo network, would you mind writing it down for me again? I am so sorry… I thought it was already tuned into a fireplace, but my mother replaced it with the hairdressers…"’ Harry smirked.

‘Oh, erm, password, what is it again?’

‘Rosmarinus.’

Draco watched the portrait on the wall of an overweight lady in a pink dress swing aside, and Harry and Ron disappeared into their common room.

Draco leaned against the wall, his eyes wide. ‘She noticed me,’ he thought, ‘This could be good, but then again, it could be the worst thing that ever happened to me... What do I do, please someone tell me what the hell I’m supposed to be doing?’ He took deep breaths, trying to clear all the nonsense out of his head and concentrate on what was happening to him. ‘Okay, so, I’ve fallen for a Weasley. I suppose it serves me right, after all the times I’ve insulted them... Right, well, there’s nothing I can do about the fact that I like her, but what I can do is make sure that nothing happens about it, whether she likes me or not. So what am I doing standing here?’ Draco suddenly realised where he was standing, right outside the entrance to the Gryffindor common room, he sprinted off down the hallway to the dungeons. Once he had got into the Slytherin common room, he dashed past a shocked Crabbe straight to his dormitory and disappeared under the duvet.

Draco would have been surprised and strangely gratified that while he was hiding under the duvet, Ginny had fallen asleep in one of the comfy chairs in the Gryffindor common room, in front of the fire. What he would have been even more interested in, was the dream she was havingÂ…

She was walking along the Charms corridor when she turned and saw him following her and her friends. She half-smiled at him and dropped her book. Telling her friends to go on without her, she turned to pick up the book. As their hands closed around the book, their eyes locked onto each other and she pulled open the door to a classroom. He followed her in. As she shut the door behind them, she kissed him deeply. He wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. She pulled away, and sighed, ‘I should be in class.’

‘Shut up and kiss me,’ he whispered.

‘Oh, Draco,’ she murmured, ‘I have to go.’ He reached out for her as she pulled away. ‘Draco, later.’

Ginny woke up with a start. It was true that she had noticed him at dinner, but had not thought that she could feel the same way. She opened her eyes to see Ron grinning at her.

‘What?’ she murmured sleepily.

‘Oh, nothing. Just wondered what you think of dear old Draco?’ he said in a sarcastic voice.

‘Why? Why would I even think about Draco Malfoy?’

‘I don’t know, but you just told him ‘later’ and I was curious to know why?’ He bounced away to tell Harry and Hermione the news.

‘Oh, great…’ Ginny thought, ‘Now Ron thinks he knows something that even I can’t figure out right now…’

Author notes: I’d like to thank everyone who’s reviewed so far, it’s great to know that things that I’m writing are actually being read!
