Anniversary with a Mind Lost

When he woke up, all he saw was white. White everywhere. He didn't like it. His eyes hurt. He closed them and fell asleep again.

About an hour later, strange noises woke him again. "I think he's waking up." It sounded familiar. It sounded warm and he didn't know why, but he wanted to hear it again.

He opened his eyes again. Still the strange white, but now he saw coloured blurs too. He didn't recognise the other sounds. All he knew was that he felt cold. He tried to let the blurs know, but he didn't know how. He let his eyes fall shut. It made the world go black. He opened his eyes again. White. Black, white, black, white. He giggled.

The sounds took on another tone. The warmth was gone and it gave him chills. "Tell us, Doctor! What is wrong with him?"

Draco Malfoy was walking through Hogsmeade, trying to find Harry. He was cursing under his breath about 'that blasted Potter'. They were supposed to meet at the Three Broomsticks an hour ago. He had sat there waiting, but Harry had never shown up.

Eventually he decided he would look for him, and when he found him, he was going to pay. No one left him waiting! He was still a Malfoy, even though he was disinherited. All because of Harry and now the bastard had stood him up. Like all his sacrifices for this relationship had been nothing.

He had probably forgotten their one-year-anniversary and was drinking something with his friends, laughing and making jokes, maybe still sitting merrily in Gryffindor Tower.

The more he thought about it the angrier he became. This was their day, damn it! The stupid Gryffindor was going to beg for forgiveness when he found him. Certain now that Harry was just with his friends at Hogwarts, Draco started walking furiously back to the school.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hey, Hermione, isn't that Malfoy there? Wasn't he supposed to meet Harry now?" Ron pointed to where a lonely figure with unmistakable blond hair was walking fast in the direction of Hogwarts. "I think they had a fight or something; he looks pretty angry."

"Ah, Ron, you know how they are, they will make up tonight. Probably loudly," Hermione said, giggling.

Ron groaned. Wasn't it enough he had accepted their relationship? He really didn't need to be reminded they also had sex. "Please, Hermione, spare me. Still, maybe we should check on him."

Hermione agreed, so they ran after Malfoy, calling, "Hey, Malfoy, wait up!"

Draco looked surprised to see them. "Aren't you supposed to be with Harry having all kinds of fun?" he asked snidely.

Hermione looked at him strangely. "You're the one Harry's supposed to be with. One-year-anniversary and all. He was talking about it all week. You didn't have a fight or something, did you?"

"Not yet we didn't, seeing as how the bastard never showed up!"

Ron and Hermione suddenly looked very worried. "What do you mean he never showed up? He left us about an hour and a half ago to go meet you."

"Well, obviously he didn't, Weasley, pay attention! Apparently he found something more interesting along the way, or it found him." Draco didn't want to admit this scared him a lot.

"Oh, God." Hermione began to look sick. "Something must have happened. We have to look for him!"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They had searched everywhere they could think of, except for one place. Draco really didn't want to go there, since he still didn't know the real story behind it, but Hermione and Ron assured him it was quite safe there. So they went to the Shrieking Shack.

They walked up to the little house and immediately Draco felt something weird. It was like there was a cloak of danger around the Shack. He tried to convince himself it was just the old wives' tales he had heard since he was small, but somehow it didn't seem likely.

He didn't know how, but he just knew. "He's here!" Not waiting for Hermione and Ron to follow, he ran into the house. All cowardice gone, he flew up the stairs. He opened the door. The last thing he heard, before a small green light hit him, was, "Draco! Noooo!"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Tell us, Doctor! What is wrong with him?" Harry asked. Hermione stood next to him. He was grateful for her presence. When Draco had woken up, he had hoped everything would be okay. That was until Draco started blinking and giggling and didn't react to anything they said. He had the feeling he was slowly falling apart after the whole incident in the Shrieking Shack.

When Harry was on his way to meet Draco, he had suddenly been grabbed from behind. He hadn't seen his captors, but he thought he had heard Lucius Malfoy's voice. They had knocked him unconscious and when he woke up, he was in the Shack. And facing him was Voldemort.

A duel had followed, and Harry remembered a curse Hermione had taught him, because she thought it could come in useful when he inevitably was landed in such a situation as this again.

Harry had tried to cast the Mind-Splitting Curse at the Dark Lord. It had hit him, and Voldemort had disappeared in a confused mess taking the few Death Eaters with him. Harry had no doubt though that he would be back.

The spell wasn't completely gone though. It was still flying through the room like it had never hit anything. The spell was flying right at the door when Draco opened it. Harry had screamed something; he couldn't remember what. The moment he saw Draco falling to the floor was forever etched into his mind.

When Ron and Hermione came upon the scene, Harry had been rocking Draco's unconscious body saying over and over again, "What have I done, what have I done?"

When he had pulled himself somewhat together, they had gone to St. Mungo's. Where they were now waiting for whatever the doctor was going to tell them.

His mind jumped back to the present. He looked pleadingly at the man, hoping he would tell them Draco was going to be okay.

"Mr. Potter. You said you used a Mind-Splitting Curse? You do know those are only for people with a Multiple Personality Disorder? What this basically means is that one personality is banned from the body.

"Seeing as that the spell wasn't complete anymore when it hit Mr. Malfoy, this isn't the case. However, his mind is greatly changed. We don't know if his mind will ever be whole again, or if it will stay in this state forever. All we can do now is wait and see.

"I'm sorry."

Harry felt like someone had hit him. Hard. He felt his knees give away beneath him. Hermione knelt before him and embraced him. He couldn't help but blame her a bit for teaching him the spell. It might have saved his life, but it had taken Draco's mind. The mind he loved.

He would never forgive himself for casting it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Draco felt cold again. The noises were gone. The blurs and the white were gone too. Everything felt wrong.

He was all alone in the dark where no one could reach him.
