Chapter 2: Who am I?
September 3rd- He hasn't written back yet, I wonder why. I think I was too hasty, he might recognize my voice. What if Ron heard it? I wonder if that's why he hasn't written back. I want to hear form him soon, his voice is so soothing. The Rap or Try... I need you...just tell me that you need me too.
Ginny put her diary away, under her bed. It was late at night, all her roommates were asleep. The bright moon was shining just above the horizon. She heard the howls of werewolves in the Forbidden Forest, making some of the people stir in their bed. She lay down in her bed when she heard a startling loud 'Hoot' from the window, making the girl in the bed next to her mumble, "Oh, go away," and fall back asleep. Ginny noticed an owl trying to get through the closed window. She got rid of the covers and shot towards the window. She nudged open the window to get a small draft of cold air and a face full of white and brown feathers. The owl dropped a note to Ginny's feet and darted away, as if afraid of her. She slowly made her way back to the bed. She heaved herself upon the bed and put the letter down in front of her. She sat there, on the bed, staring at the letter. It seemed to be mocking to open it up and see what's inside. She knew who it was from, but didn't know what was inside. She needed to see what was inside, what he had said. Had he noticed it was her or would she be secret another day. She sat there, as if waiting for something to just happen. Then, from the furthest corner and distance of her ear, came the slightest steps pacing. It seemed to be coming from the common room. Who would be up this late...was it Harry, did he ask her to meet her tonight? At that very instant, she tore into the note and read,
Ginny, is that you? Your voice...wow. If it's you, meet me in the common room as soon as you get this. If it's not you, send back word and sorry.
-HARRY
He knew, she had gone to fast, but he wanted to meet her...now. He liked her voice. Why did he want to meet her tonight? Without thought, she darted out of the room without even taking time to 'look nice'. She quietly made her way down the staircase till she could see into the common room. There he was, pacing in front of the fire place, with his hair blazing in every direction. There he was, he knew it was her and he was all alone, right there. This was the moment she wanted. This was when she was going tell him. But he already knew. If she took one more step, he would know. Why not show herself, he seemed to already know. But if she just walked away, she would suffer no pain, but no love. But the pain would be too much.
Her mind was spinning, becoming very confused and a little frightened. With her mind waving by her without thought, she turned and ran, stumbling on the top step. The pacing by the fire stopped and started in her direction. The fire head shadow was drawing nearer as she scrambled to her feet. Just as he came into view, she darted out of sight.
A slight, "Hello?" came from down the stairs. She threw herself against the wall so she could listen, not daring to show herself.
"Is that you Ginny...or whoever you are?" Came a somewhat nervous voice from down the stairs. But she dare not speak, now on the verge of tears.
"Look, whoever you are, your voice, your word...they're beautiful." She couldn't handle it, her back slowly made its way down the wall as she burst in to tears. A shrill silence followed this. Ginny was suspecting that he had heard her tears. Then a slow tapping started up the stairs, nearing her. She sat there frozen, unable to move as she trembled in her spot on the floor. At every step, her heart sank lower, but leap higher. She buried her face in her arms as he reached the top. A strange silence fell upon the two figures; she could feel his eyes upon her.
"Ginny...?" said a newly proud voice. Ginny jumped at the voice, for it most certainly didn't belong to Harry, but it seemed as if she had heard it before. She jumped when she made the match and looked up to see the snarling face of Tom Riddle. A screech was let out to among the Halls and through the dorm.
She stood up and faced him but slowly walked backward, the snarl still looking directly at her. Then his pursed lips part and release the word, "Your way of words will wary our ways, for you are..." he re-pursed his lips and vanished in a ball of smoke as many hallway doors opened and small heads peaked out at the sight.
"What happened here?" Ginny wiped around a stared right into the shady eyes of Professor McGonagall.
"...He's back...He's here..." she stumbled over her words, almost unable to stand as tears steadily made their way back. Professor McGonagall reached out and bumped Ginny's chin up, staring at each other for a few moments.
"Who, who was it?" expecting to embrace the worst.
Ginny stumbled through her tears, "It was Tom...Voldemort." She turned her eyes to the growing group of guys gathering at the top of the stairs, and directed her cloudy vision to the real Harry, who seemed extremely worried about the situation.
Professor McGonagall released her grip slowly and looked around at the gathering people, "People, most of you have done this before, follow me to the Great Hall. You will spend the night there. The other houses will join you shortly." She trotted of and urged the boys to get a move on.
Ginny, on the verge of collapsing, was comforted by some of her friend who slowly but surly made their way down the stairs. They made their way past the fire which seemed to still illuminate the face of Tom. She broke from her glance and made her way through the portrait hole. Her friends didn't dare ask her what was going on, still fearing that she might collapse at any moment. She looked ahead and noticed Harry walking a bit in front of her, looking back every now and then. She smiled to herself and pushed herself forward. But the words were now throbbing in her mind, "Your way of words will wary our ways, for you are..."
As they entered the Great Hall, they noticed an endless line of sleeping bags around the room. The tables were floating near the ceiling to make room for them all. Some teachers were already waiting and directing the students where to go. Ginny and her friends were directed towards the center where they took their seat on their blood-red or sky-blue sleeping bag.
Talking erupted in the room and Ginny, wanting to forget what happened joined in on a conversation with her friend. But they had no idea what kind of a night this was about to be.
