Sustenance And Poison Of The Dragon- Chapter 1- Hurt Feelings and Destructive Decisions

"I love her father. I don’t care what you say; she is the only reason I care to live anymore. I don‘t want to be a Death Eater. I don‘t want to join your evil clan, I‘m not like you. You have shaped the way I live my life, and mother‘s, but you won‘t anymore." A tall, slim, eighteen-year-old man, with blonde hair that hung over his gray, empty, eyes stood in front of and older man, a man with the same basic physique, his father.

His eyes were empty because he longed for a girl that he could never have. A happy, pure, intelligent, and beautiful girl. The girl he spoke of was a Muggle born witch by the name of Hermione Granger. Despite his love and desire for her, he knew that his love would always be unrequited. This is because of one man, the man that had dictated the way he lived his life since birth, his father. Because of his father’s stronghold on him, could never tell Hermione how he felt about her. Instead, she would just go on hating him. Hating him on a count of his family, the notorious Malfoys, second in command to none other than Voldemort, the dark lord. Draco would never become one of them. Sure, two years ago he would of. But not now, now he wanted to live. He had new reason to live. Hermione.

Tonight was the night he was supposed to become a death eater, like his parents. He knew that tonight, Harry Potter would die. Harry was the only person standing in Voldemort’s way. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger’s best friend. Of course he hated Potter, Mr. Perfect, Mr. Popular. He hated everything about him.

But he knew how Hermione would feel. The same way he felt when he himself looked at her. Excited, yet at the same time, sad. Sad because she was too good for him. As much as he wanted her and loved her, he didn’t want her to be caught up in his life, his horrible, confused, and dark life. He couldn’t help falling in love with her, she was perfect. To him, anyway. It wasn’t easy to love her. It was the most painful thing in the world, but couldn’t help it, after all. It was like drowning in slow motion, only you can never reach the top, never get that breath of fresh air, never get what you want. What you need. She was his breath, and his life was his asthma. He knew he would never have a chance with her. He was in way over his head with the situation. He loved in his own dream world, a world where everything is the way he wants it to be. A world where he had what he needed, Hermione. But she would always see him the same way she had since first year; A Mudblood hating, rich, daddy’s boy. He had changed, and because of the way he always treated her, she would never know.

He knew Voldemort’s plan to kill Potter that night, and he wanted to stop it, he had to stop it. For Hermione. He knew that by doing this, he would be putting his own life on the line. That was all right, what did he have to live for, anyway? He knew, furthermore, that if Voldemort were killed that night, all the Death Eaters on earth would die. The active ones, anyway.

"Is this your idea of a joke, Draco?" his father asked with a cold glint of madness in his eye.

"No father," Draco answered.

"You would give up the honor and the privilege of serving the dark lord for a little...Mudblood?" his father retorted with a sneer.

"Don’t you ever call her that! She is perfect, and good. Everything that I’m not, but long to be. And it’s your fault that I can’t have her. Your fault I’m confused. Your fault I have to live with this heartache. But you wouldn’t know what that’s like, would you father? You have never felt love. I have just been your tool, your game. You made me this way for your amusement, so you can sit back and watch my own self-destruction. You never loved me. Well, I have news for you, father. I will no longer be a puppet in your sick game. I’m stronger than that, than you."

"Don’t be a fool, boy. You need me to survive. You may be a good wizard, but you and Mudblood and Muggle loving friends can’t with hold the wrath of Voldemort. You will shrivel up and die, just as your mother did when she tried to escape," his father said in a shrill, evil voice, "She will never love you, you know, your little mudblood love. As long as I’m around, you will always be a Malfoy. She will see you just as I see you, a confused, lost little coward." Lucius Malfoy said this last part very slowly; making sure it sunk deep into his son’s mind, and worse, his heart.

Draco turned to face the fire in his father’s drawing room, a silent tear falling down his cheek. His father had hit him hard with his words; he had known exactly how to get him, his mother. The topic of his beloved mother’s death tore him apart, and his father knew it. His father never loved his mother. She, like Draco, was just a mere toy to his father. It was his father that had ultimately killed his mother; she was gaining strength, ready to fight his father’s lord. He also cried for what he knew was true, Hermione would never love him, he knew it, as did his father. He wiped the tear and the memory of his mother away and tuned to face his father once again.

"Your right..." Draco began.

"I always am," his father interrupted.

"I wasn’t finished. You’re right, I am a Malfoy. There is nothing I can do to change that, it is my blood. And your also right, Hermione may never love me back and I may live the rest of my life thinking ‘what if,’ but you were wrong in all other aspects of your little speech." Draco said threateningly.

"Am I now, how do you figure that, foolish boy," his father asked, a hint of nerviness in his voice at the new amount of confidence in his son’s voice.

"Voldemort can be defeated," Draco continued, "and I will be there when he is, and you won’t stop me father. Nobody will."

"Fine, dear son, go. Go and get yourself killed. As a matter of fact, I was going to do it my self, but why bother with the mess; I’ll be sure to tell Voldemort to do it, he never like you, he always saw you for what you would become. He saw you as this. I never believed him, of course, but now I do. Yes, after he is through with Potter, I know he would be more than happy to destroy you. So, enjoy the time you have left. Potter will be dead in less then an hour. With him gone, nothing will stand in the way of the Death Eaters and our lord. Not even you and that Granger Mudblood." Once again, Lucius drew out the last word of his phrase, Mudblood.

Draco just stood there looking at his father, now his enemy. He had to think fast about what to do. His thoughts came back to Hermione. He couldn’t let any harm come to Potter, it would crush her. He would die before he let her get hurt. He had to warn Potter, and quick. He had to help him somehow. So, without another word to his father, he swept past him and out the door of the drawing room. Knowing all the while, that it was the last time he would ever see his father. Tonight, Voldemort would die.
