Life Of A Redhead
Chapter 1
Off The Plane
By: PlaidPajamas1015
Ginny Weasley cautiously walked out of the plane and down the stairway safely to the ground. She sighed heavily, happy to be on solid gravel again. She never did trust Muggle devices, but it was the only way to travel from London to America without being thought of as "abnormal." And it was much safer this way, because if she had traveled by broomstick, she'd have to worry about being 'seen' and exposing the Magical World.
She jogged into the airport, looking around for a man with a sign that said Weasley. She quickly walked past a teenager, who looked just about her age, only with blue hair. The girl gave her a nasty glare, and Ginny became tense. She never did like the 'punk' thing, as some would call it.
This caused her to jog a little faster. She didn't want to be in a fist fight her first day here. That would ruin her whole vacation.
She walked passed the ladies' lavatory, then the men's, and then the help desk. She was starting to get worried. What if her cab driver got lost, or didn't feel like driving anywhere? Or maybe he didn't like women?
She mentally told herself to get a grip. She was completely overreacting, and she knew it. That was one of the main reasons she had came to America. One, was to find out who she truly was inside, two, was to change her innocent-little-helpless-redhead profile that haunted her since her first year at Hogwarts, and three, to let go of her old habits.
"There you are!" yelled Ginny, throwing her hands up in relief to the guy in a black suit who was holding a big sign that read "WEASLEY, VIRGINIA.
"Yea.. sorry 'bout that. I had to rush out of the agency because someone got the time wrong, and when I got here I had to use the bathroom." He said it with a half-smile face, and for some reason, she felt sorry for him.
She noticed that his facial expressions made him look sincere, so she smiled, and said "That's alright. I shouldn't have freaked out like that."
There was an awkward silence, then...
"So, shall we?" the man said. He lead her out the front of the airport towards a blue Saturn. "My boss told me that you flew in from London, and you need a job. He recommended me to be your mentor, because I have lived here longer than the rest of our drivers. So, first thing's first, My name is Cole Turner and I live here in San Francisco."
She smiled, and replied with, "Well, as you already know, my name is Virginia Weasley. I would like to be called Ginny, mind you."
"Alright, Ginny. Since I am your mentor, and I am helping you with your jobs and such, what are your interests?" He opened the car door for her, and took her things.
She only had a few suitcases, considering she wasn't the richest person in the world. Ginny stepped into the backseat of the car, and looked around. It was very clean, and a picture of a beautiful woman hung on the rear-view mirror. (Ginny had to take extra time out of her day to have lessons with Hermione so Ginny would be ready for the Muggle world. She had many lessons and tests.)
As soon as the driver door opened, Ginny said, "Actually, I'm staying in a San Francisco hotel. I've taken lots of classes for nursing, and since I'm not ready for children, I hope to get a job as a full-time nanny. Well, not nanny, but you understand.."
"Yes, I do." He stopped for a second, obviously collecting his thoughts, while Ginny's eyes traveled once again, toward the picture of the beautiful brunette that hung from the mirror.
"Who's that?" Ginny said, rather unexpectedly.
"Her?" he said, pointing at the picture. "She's my ex-wife."
"Oh. Why did you break up?"
"Well..."
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't be so nosy. I have a tendency to wonder. You don't have to explain, it's none of my business."
He saw her sorry expression, but he really didn't mind. It was kind of nice to have someone outside of the house to talk to like this.
"It's fine, really. She and I had some issues, so we decided to divorce. Then it got kind of ugly, but now were okay. I live with her, as a matter of fact. And her sisters and brother-in-law. Were all like one big family. Then there's her nephew."
He stopped, noticing her eagerness to say something, so he then gave her time to speak up before he finished, and she said lightly, "That's wonderful! That you can have such a hard time with someone, and then still live with them. I come from a big family myself, and it gets kinda boring, and sometimes tense. But that's probably because I have 5 brothers." She giggled, and then said, "What were you saying about her nephew?"
"Well, he's only about 1, and Phoebe," he said, pointing to the picture, "her sister Piper has been looking for a babysitter. And you were looking for a job.. so... you getting my drift?" he asked, a slight smile on his face.
She was totally shocked. She was also very speechless. The teenage-redhead could not believe what she was hearing. Someone she had just met, who had picked her up from San Francisco in America, was trying to get her a job. These people are very nice, she thought.
"Yes, I understand. But aren't you worried about my age? I'm turning 16, just to let ya know. Is that old enough for your sister? Mind if I call her that?"
"No, you can call her that. It's what she's like to me, anyway. I think that she's just worried if you'll pass her.. umm.. standards."
And with that, nothing else was said.
