- Author's Note:
- I decided to do this fic because the song has struck me so many times as a James and Lily story. In fact, if you go on the assumption that Harry was born in 1980, the night James and Lily died would be a Saturday night, so that part does fit. Anyway, as I said in the description this is my first attempt at a fic, so if it's horrible, go ahead and tell me. I promise I won't be offended. If you like it, please tell me and boost my ego....yes, that was my lame attempt to get you to review. I hope you enjoyed!
I really should get to bed, Lily, thought. It was well after midnight, Halloween night. Harry was in bed and safe. James was in his office, working. And I'm sitting here alone, in the dark worrying about something that probably isn't going to happen. We're safe. Peter will never crack...I hope.
For several months, Lily and James had known that Voldemort was after them. For 3 months, they had been planning on going into hiding. And for 3 months, they had planned on Sirius being their Secret Keeper. Everyone knew that James and Sirius were inseparable, so the choice was an obvious one. But then, last week, James had switched to Peter. No explanations, no warnings. "It's better this way," James had said. "Just trust me.
Lily sighed. I wonder why the sudden change of heart, she thought, for the hundredth time since the exchange had been made. Maybe I should ask.
Before she could change her mind, Lily walked into the room they had converted into James' office. James was slumped in his chair, fast asleep. She stopped in the doorway, and looked at her husband, thinking about how things had changed in the past 10 years. 10 years ago, there had been no mention of the war, or Voldemort. 10 years ago she was just a normal 11-year-old girl, starting he first year at a new school. 10 years ago, she sort of had a crush on James Potter, but wouldn't admit it. 7 years ago, she thought he was an annoying prat. Then, 3 years ago, she married him. Things really do changed.
"Are you going to stand there all night, sweetheart?" James asked, breaking her out of her reverie.
"Yep. I'm just going to stare at you and think of how great you are while you're sleeping," she replied with a grin.
James snorted a little bit. Then, he sobered. "You want to know why we used Peter instead of Sirius," he said. It wasn't a question. Lily nodded. "Because Sirius was the most obvious choice. Everyone who knew the Marauders at school knew Sirius, Remus, and me. Pete was an after thought to the group in their mind. Both Sirius and I figured that that fact would make him less of a target," James stopped his narration and sighed. "Now, though, I'm not so sure. I've been getting this sinking feeling that something's going to happen to us. There hasn't been any sign of intensified searching for us, and that scares me. It should be the opposite. Right?"
"What are you saying? Do you think that Peter broke? Are we in trouble? What about Harry?" The thought of something happening to her baby son brought Lily to tears.
James was on his feet in an instant to comfort her. "Baby, I'm not going to let anything happen to you. And I know that Harry will be safe. Don't ask me how, but I do. This will all work out, trust me."
"Ok. I'll do my best. But, James, if something were to happen to us..." He put a finger to her lips to silence her. "Harry will be fine. Sirius has promised to take care of him, and if worst comes to worst, he could live with your sister." He smirked. "Let's just hope that never happens." James looked at his watch. "Damn, it's nearly 4. Time for you to get to bed, darling. Harry will be awake soon."
They left the office and went into the family room. The trees outside were blowing eerily in the wind. They didn't immediately register the greenish light their yard was bathed in. "Oh, my God," James breathed. "Lily, take Harry and go! It's him! Go! Run! I'll hold him off--"
Harry woke with a start. He was in his bed, at Hogwarts. There's no way a Dementor could be here, he thought. Sighing, he looked over at his watch. It was four in the morning. Sighing, he lay back down and tried to go back to sleep.
The last that she ever saw him
Carried away by a moonlight shadow
He passed on worried and warning
Carried away by a moonlight shadow
Lost in a rhythm that Saturday night
Far away on the other side
He was caught in the middle of a desperate fight
And she couldn't find how to push through
The trees that whisper in the evening
Carried away by a moonlight shadow
Sing a song of sorrow and grieving
Carried away by a moonlight shadow
All she saw was a silhouette of a gun
Far away on the other side
He was shot six times by a man on the run
And she couldn't find how to push through
I stay, I pray
See you in heaven one day
Four a.m. in the morning
Carried away by a moonlight shadow
I watched your vision forming
Carried away by a moonlight shadow
