A Letter to Lily
Lily Evans walked into her dorm, to pick up her books for her next class. When she got to her bed, she saw a piece of parchment lying on her pillow. She picked it up, and read:
Dear Lily,
You know I love you. And what I want to say isn't easy, so please bear with me.
Lily sat down on her bed, before continuing to read.
I'm in love with you Lily Evans, and I can't stand the mere thought of not being with you for the rest of my life. I hope you feel the same way. But, if you don't, please burn this letter, on the count of I don't think I could stand the humiliation.
Lily laughed at the last line.
But, if you do, please keep reading. You probably think of me as a coward for not asking you this to your face. But for me, it is easier to say it on paper. As you know, our seventh year at Hogwarts is almost over. After this year, we will be responsible for our own lives. I know I wouldn't be able to live without you. I think about you every second of the day. I am having real problems trying to study for my exams!
She laughed again, because James had always been top of their class, without studying once.
You are the only reason I wake up in the morning. But, I wish I was waking up to your beautiful face. Okay, listen to me, I a rambling idiot. Right, I'm just going to ask you. In the name of love, will you marry me? If your answer is yes, will you meet me down by the lake in 'our spot'? Let's say around lunchtime? I will bring the food. But, if your answer is no, I'll understand. I just want you to know that I would do anything for you. And I sincerely hope you will say yes, because I would love for you to be my wife.
Forever Yours,
James
Lily was in tears by the end of the letter (tears of joy, mind you!).
At lunchtime, she headed out for the lake. She didn't know what she was going to say to him, she just knew what her answer was.
She saw him sitting on the ground in 'their spot', with a basket of food beside him. She couldn't help but smile.
When she finally reached him, she sat down beside him and took his hand. He was smiling from ear to ear. She imagined she must look exactly the same.
The next moment, she was in his arms, kissing him. The tears had come back. They didn't really say anything to each other. They didn't need to. All that needed to be said, was said. In unspoken words.
An hour later, when they realized they should be getting back up to the castle, James slipped his grandmothers wedding ring on her finger, and leaned in for their last kiss, before facing the whole school.
They walked back to the castle, hand in hand.
