If Something Should Happen

Sirius walked into the bar and quickly looked around. Spotting his friend at a table close to the bar, he waltzed over and sat down. The black haired man in front of him stared deeply into space, his left hand absently stroking the rim of his stein. Sirius waved to the old barkeep and waited for James to speak.

"I see you made it," James said dryly and took a deep drink from his flagon.

"Well it was rather hard to get away from Moony tonight, Prongs," Sirius said with a smile. "He met me at the door."

James raised an eyebrow. "So? What's so special about that?"

"Wearing nothing but a smile," Sirius said with another grin and a wink.

Sirius noticed that James's smile didn't reach his eyes. He watched his friend closely and took a sip of ale. Looking up, Sirius smiled seductively at the girl at the end of the bar who had been eyeing him since he had come in. James looked between them and sighed.

"You'll never change will you, Pads?" he said with a wry smile. "Still a Lady's Man after all these years; I thought you and Remus were happy together."

"We are Jamie," Sirius said with a grin. "I can't flirt with some tart if I want? It's not like I was going to take her home shag her senseless tonight. Besides, why would I want to cheat on our dear Moony?"

James sighed again and sat his stein down with a resounding thud. Sirius noticed that James suddenly looked older than his twenty-one years- but they all had aged tremendously since the war started. James had dark circles under his eyes, which held an emotion that Sirius couldn't quite name. From his messy hair to his wrinkled jeans, James looked like he had lost a fight with a Hippogriff.

"You look like hell. Anything wrong Jamie? You sounded pretty worried when you called." Sirius's eyebrows furrowed into a frown. "Are Lily and the baby all right?"

James smiled. "Last night I had to go find haggis, sardines, and orange sherbet for Lily. We were both up all night since she couldn't sleep. But there has been something weighing on my mind for a while now...."

"'Ello hot stuff," the tart from the bar said as she swaggered up to Sirius and James's table and ran a hand down Sirius's arm. "Mind if I take you home?"

Sirius and James exchanged a humored look.

"He's gay, honey," James said.

"Wot's he talking about?" the girl asked, looking confused, tears filling her eyes.

"What he's trying to say, love, is that I'm currently quite happy with my current relationship, which just happens to be with a bloke," Sirius said and removed her arm from his shoulder. She sniffed as she went back to the bar and ordered up a round of tequila.

"Lady's man!" James said and burst into hysterics. The bar patrons stared at the pair, eventually dismissing the outburst.

Sirius sighed as James tried to collect himself. When he finished laughing, James took to staring at the table again, his hand running up and down the side of his stein. Sirius clapped James's shoulder and stared him dead in the eye.

"What's bothering you mate? I haven't seen you this down since you proposed to Lily. Still don't know why you thought she'd say no."

James looked up at Sirius and smiled weakly.

"Padfoot," he said, "You know I'm not one to think about the future in a less than cheerful manner, but right now things are looking pretty bleak for the Order, what with all these Death Eater attacks left and right. I'm afraid things aren't looking too bright for our cause. The thing is, Lily and I want to make sure that if something should happen, that the baby's taken care of."

Sirius's eyes grew wide. "James, I know what you're about to ask, but why me of all people? Why not Remus? He's much more responsible than I am. Or even Peter. But me?"

James took a drink and looked at Sirius gravely. "You know as well as I do that Peter can barely take care of himself. Hell, he still lives at home with his mother. You're right of course, Remus would make and excellent godfather, but the Ministry would beg to differ. It seems they don't trust werewolves, given their bad rap. They'd probably take it to the Wizengammot no matter what Dumbledore said if worst comes to worst. They'd just place the baby in some orphanage or worse- send them to Lily's sister and brother-in-law. Did you know they had a little boy? Named him Dudley; awful name if you ask me, but I'm getting off subject.

"You're my best friend, Sirius. We've been there for each other since before we could walk and we've stuck together through thick and thin. And I let you cry on my shoulder when Moony didn't even acknowledge your existence after the Whomping Willow incident back in sixth year and even helped you fix up that ridiculous old bike of yours. You're like the brother I never had, and you're one hell of a guy. We both love you like family. That's why Lily and I want you to be the baby's godfather."

"What did James want?" Remus sad sleepily from the bed as Sirius walked back into their bedroom. "Is everything all right?"

Sirius sat down on the bed and kissed Remus's shoulder. "He asked me to be Little Prongs's godfather."

Remus turned over and slowly wrapped his arms around Sirius's neck. "And?"

"And I said yes," Sirius said, straddling the werewolf and kissing him deeply.

Remus pulled away. "Does Peter know?"

"Forget Peter," Sirius said lustfully. "Right now, all I want is you."

Remus moaned as a summer May rain began to fall outside, beating down on the tin roof in time with their lovemaking.
