Chapter 1: Life In Hell
"Hell is empty and all the devils are here." - William Shakespeare
~*~
The Weasley family seemed to finally have gotten what they deserved for they were very nice people. The Weasleys had enough money to be able to not worry about anything. It seemed they had gotten the Ace of Cups.
Arthur and Molly were thrilled with their grandchildren and children-in law. They were all to visit frequently of course. Molly could not stand an empty house for too long.
Bill and Fleur were still happily married and had two adorable children named Marc and Chantal. Bill still had a desk job but occasionally he would take a field job and sometimes Fleur would join him. Molly would watch the children while they were away. She loved having children in the house again.
Charlie, amazingly enough, had a steady girlfriend of one year. She worked in Romania with dragons alongside him after transferring from Brazil. Her name was Carmen and she was a lovely girl. Molly had been overjoyed when she had met her.
Percy was still living in Paris but had showed up for one Christmas with Penelope Clearwater. Fred and George had a round too many and ended up dancing on the table singing 'I told you so'. At one point during the night they mentioned Justin Finch-Fletchley and Percy blushed before sputtering 'how did you know?' This was a shock to all and they thanked the heavens Molly had retired for the night.
Fred and George were still doing very well with their business and had branched out to Diagon Alley and a place near Beauxbons. Fred and Angelina had one child Rose Weasley now three. George had a girlfriend of three years and some thought he might propose soon. She was a friend of Oliver Wood's from Scotland named Lonna.
Ron and Hermione were married and expecting a child soon. She was on maternal leave and often visited Molly during the day while Ron was at work. Ron and Harry were both Aurors and highly respected and counted among the survivors. They had participated in many skirmishes against the Dark Side for the war was not over and the casualties had not stopped to increase.
However there was one Weasley that was not content with how she had ended up in the past few years. Ginny Weasley had only so much to be happy about and so much to be troubled about. Her life had changed quite a bit since she had become pregnant.
One of the reasons she was unhappy was her marriage to Blaise Zabini that was forced on her by his threats. At first he threatened her with her family's health but then he had found something else more effective. Blaise had stumbled in her room once while extremely drunk and fell asleep on her bed. She had not the strength or energy to remove him so she had slept as far as she could from him. Upon waking up the next morning and finding himself in her bed he came to the conclusion that Ginny was pregnant. Which was true but it was not Blaise's child. Even though the baby was born two months early he still did not connect the dots.
So Blaise took a hair from Ginny and one from himself and made a charm. It looked like any normal charm bracelet albeit a masculine one. But that one bracelet had the power to kill her daughter. Theoretically you needed hair from the biological father and mother, which it did not have but Ginny was not about to take any chances.
So Ginny endured a quiet life without her family that she had been forbidden to see. All she had was Jade who was now five years old and an exact replica of her mother. She had fiery red hair, porcelain skin, freckles, and a short petite frame. But her eyes were her fathers. They were blue-gray in the summer and as gray as a thunderstorm in the winter.
Now we start the story in the Zabini Manor on a stormy Monday during the summer. Ginny had just finished dressing her daughter, Jade Alexis Zabini. The girl had put her blouse on inside out and her robes on backwards. As soon as she deemed her daughter ready a house elf interrupted.
"Miss Ginny, Master is wanting you and Jade in the library. Miss, he is wanting you and Jade to bring the tea," Flora squeaked.
Ginny thanked the house elf before turning to Jade and smiling encouragingly.
"Come along. It's time to play good little housewife and daughter." Ginny winked.
Jade giggled and followed her mother to the library. Once there they took a plate each from Flora and entered the room. Ginny almost tripped when she saw whom Blaise was talking to.
But Ginny ignored the figure of Draco Malfoy sitting across from Blaise and placed the tea beside the cookies Jade had already placed on the table. Draco stayed silent only nodding his thanks as she poured them tea. Blaise nodded and introduced them both. After doing so he dismissed them. Jade hesitated a moment.
"Daddy, may I please have a cookie?" Jade asked politely.
"No you can go to the kitchens if you want a snack," he answered coldly.
Ginny snorted and reached forward and grabbed two cookies. After giving them both to Jade she sent her to her room.
"I'll be there in a minute, love," Ginny called after her.
Then the red head turned and fixed Blaise with a glare. If looks could kill he would be hung, roasted and decapitated.
"She is your daughter and you will not treat her like some pest you yearn to get rid of. I may allow you to treat me like crap but I will not allow you to treat her as such," Ginny snapped.
"Whatever you say," Blaise said indifferently.
"No not 'whatever'. You can go ahead and forget that or you will be in for a really bad hex. You can come up with something better or be ready to deflect it," Ginny retorted.
"Yes, Genevra, I got it," he answered sarcastically.
"Fucking childish bastard," Ginny muttered to herself as she turned to leave.
Blaise did not deal with embarrassment easily. He was out of his chair and had a grip on her arm in seconds. She could feel the bruise forming there the size of a handprint. He did not loosen his grip as he hissed in her ear.
"Do not disrespect those who hold your vulnerability," Blaise threatened.
Ginny nodded seeing him finger the charm on his wrist. She fought the urge to slap him and turned to walk out of the room. She found a room and slipped in before falling to the floor. Her breath was heavy and her arm was sore. She calmed herself before going to find Jade.
Jade sat in a rocking chair staring off into space. Her cookies lay forgotten on a table. Ginny cursed Blaise when she came close enough to see the tears. She picked her daughter up and sat down placing her in her lap.
"Mommy, why doesn't he want me?" Jade asked.
"Oh honey, Blaise is not a very nice person. Don't take it personally," Ginny said.
"No not him. I mean my other daddy. I heard you say one time that I had my daddy's eyes but daddy has brown eyes. I want to know why the daddy I haven't seen doesn't want me," Jade explained.
Ginny sat at a loss for words. She was amazed that her daughter had figured out what only she knew. When she had collected herself she answered her.
"Listen to me, love, your real daddy and I couldn't be together. We agreed on that along time ago. I never told him that you were his. I haven't told anyone. I am pretty sure he hasn't figured it out for himself," Ginny sighed.
"Why are you so sad, mommy?" Jade asked.
"I wish you could have met him at least once. He is so different from what everyone thought of him. He wasn't at all what you would expect. Someday I will ask him if he would like to meet you," Ginny answered.
"I would like that very much," Jade said while smiling.
"But you can't tell anyone. Especially Blaise okay?"
"Okay, mommy."
Ginny and Jade sat in silence for a while before Jade asked if they could go to Hogsmeade. Ginny told her daughter she would ask Blaise and left her daughter in her room. Walking down to the library again Ginny prepared for the worst as she entered the room.
Blaise and Draco had moved to a table in the far corner and were bent over a book. Ginny could not hear anything they were saying and chose to cough loudly to make her presence known. Blaise turned and cast an annoyed look at her.
"What do you want now?"
"Jade wants to go get some butterbeer in Hogsmeade and look around the village. I was wondering if that was all right with you," Ginny answered.
"You may but remember what I told you," Blaise said.
Ginny nodded her head and quickly retreated from the room. Jade was waiting with their cloaks and a bag of money. They rushed to the nearest chimney and flooed to the Three Broomsticks. Ginny watched Jade out of the corner of her eye while she went to buy two butterbeers and then sat down across from her daughter at a corner table.
"So where do you want to visit today?"
"I want to go to Weasleys Wizard Wheezes," Jade answered. "We haven't been there before."
"Sure, we can go there," Ginny agreed.
She knew she should not have said yes but she could not say no after the conversation she had earlier with her daughter. She hoped that Fred and George were not there. It would be the first time anyone from the Weasley clan would meet Jade. Ginny did not want to have to explain anything. Especially if it would get her in trouble. Blaise may be a daft idiot but he was not to be toyed with.
When they reached her brothers store she sighed with relief to see Angelina at the corner. Technically she was family but she was family who knew not to ask questions. It was much better than trying to explain to her brothers why they had never seen their niece.
"Good morning, Angelina," Ginny greeted going up to the counter as Jade went around the shop.
"Morning, Ginny. Long time no see. Can't say you have caught me on the best of days. I have been having morning sickness. I think I might be pregnant. Molly is thrilled of course. What's new with you?" Angelina said smiling.
"Not much. Just the same as always except for a few small things," Ginny answered as Jade came up to the counter.
"You must be Jade. A spitting image of your mother except for your eyes. They are gorgeous," Angelina said while smiling at Jade.
"Thanks for the boost in confidence," Ginny said dryly.
"Oh you know I didn't mean it that way. I would kill for a pair of chocolate brown eyes like yours," Angelina said, beginning to ring up all of Jade's items. "Of course, I would kill for any chocolate at all right now."
When she handed the bag back to Jade and Ginny paid, Jade sat down and immediately began rummaging through the bag. When she found what she was looking for she stood up triumphantly.
"The chocolate bar is for you," she said handing it back across the counter.
"Are you sure you don't want it?" Angelina asked.
"Yes, too much chocolate makes my tummy hurt," she answered.
"That's too cute. Thank you, sweetie," Angelina smiled.
They bid Angelina goodbye and she thanked Jade for the chocolate bar again before they left the shop. They looked around a few more shops before deciding to floo home. Jade went first pronouncing Zabini Manor correctly and whizzing off. When Ginny followed she found Jade speaking to Draco Malfoy in the entranceway.
"So how old are you?" Draco asked.
"I am five years old" Jade revealed while showing the number on her hands.
"Wow you're getting old. You're going to start school in six years. Are you excited?" he asked next.
"My daddy wants me to go to Durmstrang but I don't like that school. My mommy is trying to convince him to let me go to Hogwarts," Jade answered.
"Well little one, I have to go but I'll see you around ok?"
"Ok, Mr. Malfoy," she smiled.
"Just call me Draco," he said and with a wink he left.
Ginny came out of the shadows and frowned at the smile on her face. Why must he make everything so difficult?
"Honey, what were you talking about?" Ginny asked.
"Draco told me I reminded him of you. Then he asked me how old I was... Why, mommy?" Jade asked.
"Nothing let's go upstairs..."
"Excuse me, Miss Ginny, Master Blaise would like to see you in the library," Tussle interrupted.
"Okay Tussle. Would you please run a bath for Jade? I will be up to get her in," Ginny said.
Ginny entered the library for the third time that day to find Blaise sitting at a desk alone, reading a letter. She sat across from him but not a word was spoken. The silence continued while he read the letter and Ginny looked around the room. It had shelves covering every wall from floor to ceiling, save a small space for the double doorway. All the shelves were full of books on various topics. The books were mostly dark as well as the shelves and the room had almost no light save a few lamps on tables around the room. The ceiling was of a Gothic style and there were no pictures or anything elaborate besides the tall leather chairs and mahogany desks. It was an eerie room but the darkness was comforting at times.
Blaise's voice broke her train of thought and brought her back down to earth. Not a place she was enjoying at the moment.
"Your mother has sent a letter concerning your fathers fortieth birthday. What do you think if it?"
"Every birthday of every year you forbid me to go to the party," Ginny responded. "Why would I think anything of it?"
"Your mothers seems to think it suspicious that you never attend these parties. Suspicion in your particular position," Blaise said delicately, "is not a good thing. So you will take Jade, but this is assuming that you do not speak of our arrangement. The bracelet will not leave my wrist and it will reach her wherever you go. Do you understand?"
"Yes," Ginny answered, hiding her joy.
"Good. You may go," he dismissed her.
Ginny could not wipe the grin off her face as she left the library in search of Jade. When she did find her she immediately told her daughter the news.
"Does that mean I get to meet your whole family?" Jade said overwhelmed.
"Yes all of the Weasleys and a few extras like Angelina. She is married to your uncle Fred and they have a daughter named Rose. But you will meet them all on Saturday. It is time for dinner now so go wash up, and throw on some pajamas. We can eat in my room and watch a movie," Ginny said.
Ginny watched her daughter disappear behind the bathroom door before going to the kitchen. She opened a few cupboards and found some ingredients before whipping up some spaghetti. While she was placing the plates on trays and grabbing some drinks Blaise came into the kitchen. She ignored him until he came up close behind her. She was so shocked when he touched her that she did not move as he placed his hands on her stomach and began to move them upwards.
"Blaise, kindly take your hands off my chest and back off," Ginny demanded.
Blaise ignored her and twisted her around to face him. As he leaned forward slightly she bent back against the counter. She could smell the alcohol on his breath and it was making her dizzy.
"Are you drunk? Never mind that was a stupid question," Ginny muttered.
"I want you," he said suddenly sounding like a child.
"I'm sure you do and that will be remedied in two minutes," Ginny snorted.
Ginny cast a sobering charm and stunned Blaise before he hurt himself or anybody else. She then made her way over to the fireplace and threw in some floo powder. Sticking her head in she named the place she wanted to contact and looked up to see into the kitchen of Parkinson Castle. Pansy Parkinson looked back at her while sitting down with a cup of tea.
"You planning on catching flies or taking care of the passed out love of your life?" Ginny barked.
"Blaise?" the blonde girl asked unsure.
"No the other love of your life that could be passed out in Zabini Manor. Really, Parkinson, keep up," Ginny answered with sarcasm.
"Whatever Weasley. I will be there in a minute," Pansy answered.
"That's the come back of the century that is," Ginny muttered as she disappeared.
Pansy Apparated a minute later looking frustrated. She immediately set about taking care of Blaise. Ginny finished up in the kitchen before grabbing the trays and starting for her room.
"If you need anything my room is the first on the right in the East Wing."
Pansy only nodded her response as Ginny left the room.
Arthur Weasley had tinkered with an old Muggle VCR and TV. He added some magical qualities to them and gave them to his daughter when she had left Hogwarts. Ginny had bought a few videos, which she would watch by herself or with Jade. Tonight they were watching Finding Nemo. Around halfway through the movie Jade fell asleep and Ginny tucked her in and turned down the volume of the movie. She got through another half hour before she heard someone call down the hall. She stopped the movie and ran out into the hall.
"Shush! Jade is sleeping damn it!" Ginny snapped at Pansy.
"Sorry but I just wanted to ask you something," Pansy sneered.
"Well then let's go to the sitting room," Ginny suggested. "I don't want to wake her."
Both women were deathly quiet as they walked through the halls. The large space between them proved they were not exactly happy about being in the other's presence. Once in the sitting room they both sat down wondering where to begin.
"Why did you summon me to help Blaise?" Pansy asked after awhile.
"What do you mean?" Ginny returned.
"You are his wife. You know he has a mistress yet instead of being angry you hand him over when he is most vulnerable. Should you not protest? Or try not to encourage her to come?" Pansy clarified.
"Are you jealous?"
"You know I am. Everyone knows I love him. It was common knowledge I used Goyle to make him jealous in our seventh year. But he was dating a Ravenclaw. Now he says he loves me but he will not be with me. So the question is does he really love me?"
"Listen up Pansy, because I am going to say this once and only once. I do not like Blaise. Never mind love him. I am perfectly fine with you two fooling around or whatever you do as long as Jade does not know. As to Blaise its ridiculously obvious he loves you but he is also clearly a bit slow," Ginny explained.
"So..." Pansy said unsure of what to say.
"So I don't give a crap what you do. If you get him to divorce me I will owe you forever," Ginny concluded.
Ginny followed Pansy to the entrance way where Pansy grabbed her cloak and prepared to Disapparate.
"Thanks, Weasley," was all she said before she left with a pop.
Ginny nodded her acknowledgement to the empty room and went to her own. Jade was still sleeping deeply and took up half the large bed. Ginny put some pajamas on and crawled into bed before promptly falling asleep.
Saturday could not come quickly enough for both Ginny and Jade. Jade spent hours trying to come up with a suitable present for her grandpa. She would lock herself in her room and refuse to let Ginny see. When she finally finished on Friday the present was wrapped and sitting neatly beside the clothes she had chosen for the party.
Saturday morning Ginny was up at seven. Five hours before the party. Ginny went around and gathered her things before realizing she was not sure what to wear so she got Jade to sit on her bed as she tried on outfits.
"You are never going to agree with any of the clothes," Ginny sighed exasperated. She had tried on fifteen at least.
She returned wearing cream-colored robes to look for another outfit. Seeing a Muggle one she pulled it out. It was a skirt the fit snugly on her hips; it was about knee length with a slit going up the front to about mid thigh. She found a sleeveless green v-neck shirt to go with it. The skirt was made of denim and the shirt was made of a soft sheer material. The outfit greatly accented her curves. When she left the closet this time Jade smiled while nodding.
While Jade finished her breakfast and got ready, Ginny had a quick shower before getting redressed in the outfit she chose and put on some make-up. Then she pinned half her hair up with a jade clip leaving a few tendrils to frame her face. She deemed herself ready and went to Jade's room.
Jade was attempting to place everything in a pile small enough for her to carry but was getting frustrated with her lack of success.
"Bugger!" she said failing for the sixth time.
Ginny entered the room to find Jade looking mournfully at her pants. There was a large rip along the side of her left leg. Ginny took her wand out and repaired them before kneeling down beside her daughter.
"How did you rip your pants love?"
"I was trying to put scissors in my bag and they fell," Jade sighed.
"Did they cut you?" Ginny asked worried.
"No."
"Why do you need scissors?" Ginny asked relieved.
"I need the scissors and tape just in case the wrapping paper gets ripped before we get there." Jade exclaimed.
"Oh, love, your grandpa will not care if there is a little rip in the present. He probably doesn't even expect a present. He only wants to see you. If you are that worried about the paper then I will look up a wrapping charm before we go, okay?"
"Okay," Jade said, smiling once again.
"Now, you take the cloaks down and I will enchant the presents and stuff to follow you while I go look up the spell," Ginny instructed.
Jade grabbed the cloaks as her mother muttered a few spells and they went on their separate ways. Jade hurried to the entrance way while Ginny made her way to the library. Ginny quickly found the spell she was looking for and was about to leave when Blaise entered.
"There you are. I have some...associates coming over for a meeting. I need you to leave a bit early," Blaise insisted.
Ginny agreed and left the library swiftly to find Jade in the entrance hall once again with Draco. He was crouching so he was eye level with her while she sat in a chair.
"...Now you make a bunny ear and pull the lace around and grab that before you pull. Got it?" he asked.
Ginny watched as her daughter tried and succeeded to tie her shoes. Jade giggled and jumped up to give Draco a hug that he returned awkwardly. Jade saw her mother as she walked further into the room. Jade left the circle of Draco's arms but grabbed his sleeve to bring him over to her.
"Mommy this is my friend Draco. He taught me how to tie my shoes," Jade said, happily lifting her foot for display.
Ginny nodded to show that she had been listening but she was too lost in Draco's eyes to answer with words. She wasn't too lost in his eyes to notice that his shirt was tight enough to show the firm muscles underneath them. His eyes were softer than they had been when she had seen him in the Leaky Cauldron but they still held the cold unemotional look in them. She searched them for any emotion but there was none to be seen. She was glad he would not see any emotion in her eyes either. She had learned early on in her relationship with Blaise that hiding emotion was useful.
Jade sensed the atmosphere had changed and stood back quietly knowing it was not the time for interruptions. She surveyed the scene before her as it unfolded. Draco was the first to break the silence.
"Mrs. Zabini," he greeted nodding his head slightly.
"Mr. Malfoy," she said repeating the gesture but frowning slightly at her label.
Ginny moved to walk past him but he held a hand out to stop her.
"I am sor..."
"Don't," she cut him off. "I don't need to hear it. If you are going to befriend my daughter go ahead but don't you dare walk out on her. She does not need any grief and she never asked for any of this to happen. So make the commitment or leave her alone or you will be sorry," Ginny continued in a low voice so only Draco could hear.
Ginny then pushed past him, levitating the presents and opening the door. She beckoned to her daughter and waited patiently.
"Bye Draco," Jade said looking confused.
"Bye little one," he answered.
Ginny did not explain what happened and Jade did not ask. They both kept quiet their minds on the party. Once they got to the Burrow they found it easier and were soon wrapped up in the event. As they were two hours early the only people present were Arthur, Charlie and Molly. Jade gave everyone a big hug as did Ginny before Jade began to help her grandmother with the cooking and Ginny sat at the table with her father and brother.
An hour before the party was supposed to begin Ron, Hermione and Harry arrived at the same time as Charlie's girlfriend, Carmen. Introductions were given out and the men moved outside.
"God Hermione! You're far along aren't you? I would say about eight or nine months though I wasn't that big even then. Are you sure your not having twins?" Ginny exclaimed giving her sister-in-law a hug.
"Oh dear! I hope not. I love the twins to death. They are lovely brothers but I do not want four of them around," Hermione answered.
"Hear hear!" Molly smiled.
"I will agree with that. First time I met them they turned my skin blue and I had a conference the next day," Carmen smiled.
"Oh I remember that," Molly said, frowning slightly.
"How did they turn you blue?" Jade asked curiously.
"They gave me a candy called Rainbow delight or something like that. It turns you into your favorite color," Carmen explained.
Jade got a mischievous look in her eye that only her mother seemed to notice. She silently started to edge out the door.
"What are you up to, Jade," her mother asked suspiciously.
"Nothing. Nothing at all. I'm just going to go help with the tables...outside" Jade smiled innocently.
"She looked pretty innocent to me," Carmen commented.
"Innocent my arse," Ginny said. "I can see her mind spinning little ideas all ready. I wouldn't take anything form her; she got me last month with a canary cream. I should have known, too. I helped invent those things. She's a sneaky one."
The whole room chuckled as Fred, Angelina, Rose, George and Lonna arrived. Molly took Rose upstairs so no one would wake her up. Angelina thanked her before turning to Jade.
"Hey, Jade. I brought you something for the other day," Angelina said handing over a chocolate bar.
"Thank you, Angelina," Jade said taking the bar.
"I heard you came to visit and you didn't even wait for us to come back-"
"Yeah! What is the meaning of that?" George finished for Fred.
"I'm sorry but we had to go buy some chocolate for dad. I saved you some though," Jade said as innocent as pie.
"Jade, wha..." but Ginny didn't get to finish.
The twins popped the candy into their mouths and both turned red. The kitchen erupted into laughter bringing the others from the yard. Fred and George joined once they realized what had happened.
"She is a Weasley all right," Molly chuckled form the doorway.
In the next half an hour the rest of the party showed up. First was Bill with Fleur, Chantal and Marc. Then not long after was Dumbledore who arrived with Nymphadora Tonks, Remus Lupin, Alastor Moody and Rubeus Hagrid. Last came Mundungus Fletcher and Perkins from Arthur's office. The crowd moved outside to sit around four long tables filled with food. Ginny sat at the end of the long rectangle across from her father at the head of the table. Jade sat to Ginny's left talking to Angelina about the new baby. Fred and George were talking about a new product with Lonna. Hermione lay against Ron as he and Harry discussed Quidditch. Charlie, Carmen and Molly were discussing possible vacation spots. Arthur and Perkins were busy talking about new Ministry regulations. She smiled at Lupin and Tonks who were flirting discreetly unbeknownst to anyone else at the table. Bill, Fleur and Hagrid were in a conversation about the new goblin movement. Dumbledore was on Ginny's right talking about Hogwarts with Moody and Mundungus. There was a smaller table beside the main table where Chantal was helping Rose and Marc eat. Jade had not wanted to sit at the children's table and had chosen to stay close to her mother.
After lunch everyone gathered around for presents though Arthur insisted that everyone showing up was good enough for him. The pile of eccentric and interesting things grew until only one present was left. Jade had insisted she be the last and slowly rose to give her grandpa the present before hurrying back to her mother.
Arthur opened the gift to find a scrapbook of pictures and memories of Ginny and Jade from Jade's birth until just a few months ago. Ginny watched as her father beckoned Jade forward and gave her a hug. He whispered his thanks. The site gave her a feeling of happiness and sadness at the same time. It was moments like this she felt regret for keeping Jade from her family. But Blaise did not give her a choice did he? Hope just seemed untouchable sometimes.
The tables were put away and people sat around talking for a while before cake and tea. Ginny sat down beside Harry on the back step. He looked just as miserable as she felt. Making sure Jade was still playing chess with Ron she gave her attention to Harry for the moment.
"So is it me or is everyone entirely too happy?" Ginny began.
Harry chuckled and shook his head.
"So what's it this time, Mr. Potter? I have got a few minutes to spare for you to unload your problems," she pushed.
"It's nothing, Gin. No need for me to depress anyone else," Harry avoided.
"Harry, there is no way on earth you are more depressed than I am right now. Knowing I am not the only one with problems will make me feel better and unloading them will make you feel better. So stop making excuses and spill, Potter," Ginny demanded.
"Yes but- No Gin, not the puppy dog eyes. Do you have any idea how unfair that is? You got me and Ron into a lot of trouble with those eyes," Harry scowled.
"Come on please?" Ginny said making herself as cute as possible.
"All right. All right. Where to begin?"
"At the beginning..." Ginny suggested innocently.
"OK well a little while ago I was helping on a very large case and I met this girl. She was a witness to a really big murder. Of course after the case was finished she had to be hidden. The person convicted got the Dementor's kiss but she got some death threats from his associates. Gin, this girl is amazing. She's smart, funny, and gorgeous. I have never met anyone like her. It sounds impossibly cliché but its true. I just can't ask her to give up her safety. No matter what I do I am still-"
"Harry Potter, world famous hero. The one who deflected the killing curse from Voldemort as a baby. Your afraid the publicity will be too much and she will be revealed," Ginny finished.
"Exactly. I am getting so tired of it. And that's not the end of it. What if we got over the publicity and she was labeled as my weakness or I die and she gave up her safety for nothing. I owe her more than that," Harry sighed.
"Harry, you can sit around wondering about the 'what ifs' forever and come up with millions. Believe me it will drive you near insanity. Sometimes you just have to make your decisions with the good old Gryffindor way. Run in with no plan, no idea what your getting yourself into and coming out wondering how you survived. Or you spend the rest of your life regretting the decision. You should probably talk to this girl before you make any decisions anyways. Just know that regret hurts more than you could imagine. Knowing if you had changed your mind in that one moment that things would be different hurts more than anything," Ginny concluded.
"When did you become so wise?" Harry asked.
"From experience," she answered her mind clearly far from the Burrow.
They sat quietly for a few moments watching everyone around them. It was a perfect moment to capture and keep. Ginny's thoughts were interrupted though as Jade came running up to them grinning from ear to ear.
"I beat Uncle Ron at chess! It was great" Jade laughed.
Ginny smiled at her daughter and wrapped her in a hug.
"We will have to get you a medal for that. No one has beat your Uncle Ron at chess since before I can remember," Harry told her.
"If it had to be somebody I am glad it was you," Ron said coming over.
Hermione joined them walking over as fast as she could. Harry got up so she could sit down.
"Thank you," she said holding her stomach and lowering herself gently.
"Come on Jade, let's let the ladies talk. Besides there are two twins waiting for us to prank them," Ron suggested.
Harry, Ron and Jade wandered away leaving Hermione and Ginny to talk for a while.
"So how is life with my brother?" Ginny smiled.
"You and I both know there are times where I could just strangle him but Merlin, Ginny, I love him so much. It's like oxygen; I can't be far from him without feeling weak in some way. He has been working a lot lately but I don't mind that much. As long as he is there when this babe comes out. If he isn't there for labor I will have his head on a stick," Hermione smirked.
"Don't worry he will be there. He loves you. It took him awhile to figure out but he does. If he isn't there I am sure he will rectify it," she comforted.
They sat in silence for a while enjoying the calm of knowing for the moment everything was fine. But the silence was broken when Hermione noticed Ginny's bruise. She had forgotten to heal the bruise Blaise had given her when he had grabbed her arm.
"Dear Lord, Gin, where did you get that?" Hermione gasped.
"Nowhere. It was an accident," Ginny brushed it off.
Hermione gave her a suspicious look but left the subject alone. Instead she went inside to help Molly with the cake. Everyone else also headed inside to spread out in and between the kitchen and living room for cake. Ginny decided to enjoy the quiet for a little while longer and stayed outside. She sat in a lawn chair and felt the world slow down. The atmosphere changed and it was so peaceful Ginny almost felt hope for a moment. But the back door creaked open breaking the moment.
She looked up to see her brothers and Harry come out of the house. They all grabbed a lawn chair and joined her. They all looked somewhat guilty like they were trying to hide something.
"So..." Ginny broke the silence.
"What's new Gin?" Bill asked.
"Not much..."
"So what's happened over the past few years?" Charlie continued.
"Not much. Raising Jade has kept me busy" Ginny answered.
George passed around glasses of wine though everyone else had a glass of white and she had a glass of red. When she pointed this out Fred said mom had wanted them to finish the bottle off. The guilty looks they gave her and the glass told her otherwise. She looked at it closely and saw silvery white foam around the sides of the glass. The sight jogged her memory and Professor Snape's extra lessons came back to her.
'Veritaserum is untraceable to all human senses, normally. However if it is hidden in alcohol it will react with the ethanol and create a silver white foam...'
Ginny was surprised. Normally they would not go this far to find out what was wrong with her. They were lucky she knew they were only trying to protect her because they would be in big trouble.
"It is amazing how we have gone through so much yet even when I am twenty-six you feel the need to baby me," Ginny said serenely.
"What do you mean?" they all asked.
"Well, trying to solve my problems or at least trying to find out what they are. That is annoying enough in it's own respect. But using Veritaserum to get it out of me? That is low," Ginny answered coolly looking for a reaction in their faces.
"Veritaserum is untraceable..." Ron said mirroring the shocked faces of everyone else.
"Not in all cases and I would know. I took NEWT level Potions, Advanced Potions and extra lessons with Snape," Ginny replied.
"We only do it because we care, Gin," Fred sighed.
"Harry and I have a case related to some Order business," Ron admitted.
"We have reason to believe Blaise is involved," Harry continued.
"So now you're trying to see if your sister is involved?" Ginny asked.
"No, we wanted to make sure he was treating you right" George replied firmly.
"Well next time do not try to trick me into telling you. Ask me straight out to my face," Ginny answered coldly.
They all watched as she poured her wine out onto the grass and walked back into the house. She glanced into the living room to check on Jade before wandering upstairs. She entered her old room expecting the quiet to be comforting but the memories only made her feel worse. The room was almost exactly as she had left it. When she opened the closet door she found all her potions ingredients there with preserving spells on them. The pictures she always kept on her dresser were there unmoved. She picked one up of herself and Hermione laughing at a soaked Ron and Harry. Those were the times she had no worries and she could be at peace for more than five minutes. Her reverie was broken as she glanced at the doorway to see her father standing there.
"You know they didn't mean to hurt you. They just worry about you," Arthur Weasley said calmly.
"I know but they went a little to far this time. Using a Ministry controlled potion? That is not exactly the best way to say 'sorry Gin we wanted to help'. They should know better" Ginny sighed.
"I know that but you have to understand. The Ministry is conducting raids again and they plan to hit Zabini Manor soon. Your brothers didn't know what else to do," he explained.
"Just tell them Jade and I will be fine. If I need help I will ask for it," Ginny answered. "We should be going though. Happy Birthday Dad."
They both stood up and Ginny gave her father a hug before going to collect her things. She said goodbye to everyone as she collected her disgruntled daughter. Then she was gone. If she had stayed a little while longer she would have seen Arthur head to Dumbledore and Moody when he came downstairs. She would have known there was more than meets the eye to her enslavement.
When Ginny arrived home she put Jade to bed before going to find Blaise. He had demanded she come to see him after the party to discuss something. When she reached the study door she opened it slowly and puzzled at the scene before her. Blaise was absent for the moment. But people she would bet her life were Death Eaters were sitting around a table in the middle of the room. She chose to wait by the doorway until Blaise came into the room. She glanced at the people at the table who were ignoring her.
Draco was there the first one she noticed in the room. He was looking thoroughly bored waiting for something. His perfect posture and presence still demanded respect though. Pansy was there and gave Ginny a slight nod when she noticed her, which Ginny returned. She recognized a few others like Crabbe, Goyle, Marcus Flint, Millicent Bulstrode and the man who came to Hogwarts in her second year, Macnair. Others were only vaguely familiar from reports on Death Eater trials like Nott, Avery, Bletchley and Adrian Pucey.
Blaise entered the room just as she was about to give up. Lucius Malfoy fresh out of Azkaban followed him into the room. She spared a glance at Draco who could not hide the flash of annoyed anger in his eyes. Or maybe it was just her that saw it. Blaise gave him a chair and continued on with an earlier topic. He hadn't noticed Ginny and she was just fine sitting back and observing the meeting commence.
"Would you like something?" someone asked Ginny awhile later.
"I was told that my husband wished to see me," she answered formally. It was Lucius that had spoken to her.
Blaise looked up finally and motioned her over pulling out a chair as she walked towards the table. She sat down after hesitating for a millisecond. The crowd finally acknowledged her as if they hadn't known she had been there all along.
"We were wondering if you had heard anything interesting at this party," Blaise asked.
"No I didn't" Ginny answered.
"We think they know some valuable information that could be very important. Are you sure you didn't hear anything?" Blaise said squeezing her shoulder in a way that couldn't possibly be mistaken as comforting.
"They suspect you're a Death Eater and are planning a raid for the manor. But I am sure you all ready knew that," Ginny answered ignoring the pain.
"And you said?" he pushed.
"I told them you were," Ginny said slightly sarcastic. "I didn't say anything besides to leave me alone. Your lucky too considering they tried to use Veritaserum on me."
Blaises eyes flashed warning of later punishment and Ginny regretted her outburst. Just as long as he did not go near Jade she could stand the pain.
"Quite the mouthy wife you have," Lucius commented.
"Yes, I had noticed. It is quite amusing her little rebellious outbreaks but she knows she can't do more than that. Don't you?" Blaise smirked and Ginny could only nod.
"I remember when my wife was like that. The bitch was a problem in the beginning but I subdued her eventually. Now those were the days," Lucius smiled evilly.
Ginny felt her stomach turn. She had no problem imagining what Lucius had done to his wife. She had not forgotten the incident with the diary. Nor had she forgotten the character that he had molded his son to be. Men like that deserved to die but just never seemed to disappear.
"I was actually starting to consider taking a leaf from your book Lucius. I can't have her slipping when I have guests around. Especially with these raids becoming a threat," Blaise said as if he were talking about buying new robes.
"Well I always found a good dose of The Cruciatus Curse worked pretty good. Then there was the dungeon. How I miss having someone to torture around the house. Draco here grew up and he doesn't need to be reminded anymore. Right boy?" Lucius laughed.
"Yes how unfortunate," Draco drawled.
"I will not stand for your impudence boy or those reminders won't be a mere memory," Lucius remarked.
"Don't forget you still need me to finish off your little escapade so do not go around thinking you will get an AK off because you will be damned without me," Draco retorted.
"That may be but I won't need you forever. Everyone is dispensable. Do not forget what I taught you," Lucius snarled.
"Well I think that is all we need from you tonight. You are dismissed," Blaise told Ginny.
She refrained from saying something sassy and left the room without a word. She was glad to be free of the feeling of their eyes on her. She could feel her heart drumming against her chest. The atmosphere was more tense then a violin string. It was enough to make anyone nervous. Ginny made her way to bed hoping tomorrow would hold more hope than today had.
