Chapter 9: Jealousy

The next morning, Donna woke up with rays of sunlight pouring over her. She recalled the events of last night and felt that there was a rain cloud pouring rain on her. She started crying and lay in bed for another half hour just looking up at the ceiling. Her mind was swirling with thoughts of Justin, seeing him with another girl, his chasing after her once he saw that she had seen him, and her telling him to leave when the only thing she wanted to was pull him into her arms and kiss him.

But she wasn't about to let him or anybody else see how much this was killing her. She had to remain strong. She had to get on with her life. She knew that her and Justin's relationship would never work, no matter how much she loved him, and she knew she had to get over him. It was the only way she would survive seeing him everyday. She had to pretend like she didn't care about him anymore.

After she got out of the shower and had brushed her teeth, she put on her school uniform, but changed it. The skirt went s few inches higher so that it went just halfway down her thighs, and made the shirt tighter and undid the top button. Sure, Donna wanted to look hot, but that did not mean looking slutty. She wanted people to think she wasn't depressed or scared, but that she was just fine and she didn't have a care in the world.

When she was done doing her makeup and grabbing all of school things, she went downstairs. Even though it was only Sunday, she needed to do some studying since her grades ha been suffering lately.

All eyes were on her as she walked down the stairs. She saw Lily on the couch and they left the common room, not saying a word to each other. They went to the library and began to study. But Donna couldn't concentrate. She felt as though somebody was watching her so she looked up and saw Lily staring intently at her.

"What?" Donna asked, looking back down at her Ancient Runes textbook.

"Are you okay?" Lily asked, worried for her friend.

"Of course I am, Lil," Donna said absently, like she wasn't even there. Her words sounded flat and they held no truth to them. "Why?"

"Look, Donna," Lily whispered so that nobody but Donna could hear her. "You don't need to pretend with me. I know you must be heartbroken. But it's okay. It's normal. You don't need to act like you're okay when I see pain written all over your face."

"I'm sorry," Donna hissed angrily, "but this is none of your business. It isn't a problem anymore. I am over him."

"But, Donna-."

"If you are going to keep interrupting my studies, than I think I will be leaving," Donna said, standing up and grabbing her books. She left the library leaving Lily alone to stare at her in shock. Donna herself couldn't believe what she had just done. She felt Slytherin blood run through her veins and at the first moment of being provoked, she had let it out in her anger. It both stunned and terrified her.

"Donna!"

She froze. A boy had called after her. She turned around and saw a blonde boy walking towards her. Upon closer inspection she noticed that his eyes were a lime green color with specks of blue mixed in, he was a little bit taller than her - not as tall at Justin, but about three inches taller - so she came up to his nose, he was pale but not really, and he had an adorable freckle right above his lips. She had to admit that he was hot - although to her he couldn't even hold a candle compared to Justin.

"Hi," she said, feeling a little confused. Why was this boy talk to her? She had never seen him before.

"Hey," he said as he walked up to her. "What's up?"

He seemed nervous and it was cute. She smiled and said, "Looking for a place to study. I'm sorry but...who are you?"

He didn't seem offended or taken-aback at all. He just smiled at her and Donna felt all gooey inside.

"Oh, of course," he said. "I'm Landon. Landon Harper. I'm a fifth year Hufflepuff. That's probably why you haven't seen me before."

"Oh," she said, smiling. "Yeah. Hi, Landon. Well, obviously you know who I am."

"I think everybody here knows who you are," he said quietly. She pursed her lips together and turned around to walk away from Landon. "Donna, wait!" She continued walking. It was obvious all he wanted to do was snub at her and Donna would not stay around to listen to it. Then she heard footsteps behind her and Landon was jogging to catch up with her. "Donna, please. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to say that."

Donna stopped and turned to look at him. "All right," she said hesitantly. "What do you want, Jason?"

"Can we take a walk?" he asked shyly, looking down at the floor and shuffling his feet. His shyness is so adorable, she thought!

She smiled at him and grabbed his hand, shocking herself. She hadn't been this confident in weeks. He looked up at her and she said, "I'd love to."

He beamed at her and then they were walking to the entrance halls, hand in hand. Her arm was beginning to get sore from holding the books and she shifted the weight a few times. Finally, Landon noticed and offered to hold them for her.

"Thanks," she said, hoping she didn't sound to relieved. He took the books and put a charm to make them weightless. Donna felt foolish. Why hadn't she thought of that? She was going to take them back since now they didn't weigh anything but he looked happy to be carrying her books.

"No prob," he said. As they were walking down the halls, Donna saw Justin. Her mouth parted slightly and it felt like they were the only one in the hallway. Their eyes locked and when they were right next to each other their shoulders touched.

Then everything came back and her and Justin were facing with their backs to each other. She felt Landon next to her and she smiled slightly, looking down at the floor.

"Won't your boyfriend be mad that you're walking with me?" Landon asked. Donna looked up, surprised.

"What? Who's my boyfriend?" she asked. What was he talking about?

"Justin Lovegood," he said. He sounded cool and casual, but she could hear jealousy in his voice too. "He's your boyfriend isn't he? That's why you and him are always together, right?"

"We're not always together," she said, looking ahead of her. She stopped and so did he.

"So, your not denying that's he's your boyfriend, are you?"

"No, he's not my boyfriend," she said. Sure, she wished he was, but he would never date her. He's too old for her, as he had pointed out countless times. "We're just...I don't know what we are. Friends...I think. I mean, we haven't really hung out together lately."

"I've noticed," he said. "So, seeing as how you don't have a boyfriend - you don't, do you?" She shook her head and he smiled. "And since Hogsmeade is coming up this Saturday, do you want to come with me? As a date?"

Should she? What would Justin do? Would she be able to have a good time with some boy other than Justin?

Then she smiled and said, "I would love to." He beamed at her and hesitantly kissed her on the cheek.

"I'll meet you by the doors at two thirty, okay?" he asked. She nodded and he handed her back her books. "See you."

"Bye." He walked away and Donna turned around to walk back to the Gryffindor common room to think. But as she did, her breath caught in her throat and she stepped back.

There was Justin with his arms crossed. He was looking at her with disbelief and to her horror...pain.

When Saturday came, Donna tried her extra best to be excited about her date. She did all of her makeup, looked extra cute in her outfit, which was a spaghetti strapped dress that fell down to about halfway down her sighs. It was white and pink, blue, purple, yellow, green, red, and baby blue polka dots on it. Even though she looked younger than she was, she looked cute and mature she needed confidence now more than ever.

Then, when she was done getting ready, she looked at herself in the mirror and sighed. This was going to be harder than she thought it would be.

"Okay, relax, Donna," she told herself. "Just relax. Nothing's going to happen. You're not going to run into Justin. Besides, Landon likes you! You don't need to worry about anything. Just be cool and everything will be just fine."

She took a few deep breaths and then grabbing her purse, she left her room. The whole time she walked to where she was supposed to meet him she couldn't help thinking of what would happen if they did happen to run into Justin. What would he do? What would he think of what she looked like? Would she be able to ignore him if she did see if? What if he had a date himself?

Forget about it, she thought. He had his chance. He blew it. You don't need a boy who will keep making up excuses so he can't date you. You've got Landon and he's four years older than you. You don't see him thinking he's too old for you. So just forget about Justin. If he sees you and gets angry, well, that's his fault.

When she arrived, she saw that he was already there. He caught sight of her and his jaw dropped. Donna blushed slightly and smiled. He smiled back, his eyes taking in her appearance.

"Hi," she whispered, when she was in front of him.

"Hey," she said, looking at her still. "You look...amazing. No, not amazing, outstanding. Wait, no, marvelous. No, stunning. No, no, you look gorgeous."

She blushed more and said a faint, "Thank you. You look nice, too."

"Merlin, you look fantasmic," he said. Donna looked at him curiously and he turned a crimson red. "I know. My sister says it all the time when I'm home for the summer. I've caught on to it."

She giggled and said, "Anyway, thank you. You ready to go?"

"Yeah," he held his hand out for her and she took it. "Lets go." They then left and then they were soon walking down the streets of Hogsmeade.

"So, d'ya wanna go into the Three Broomsticks to get a butterbeer?" Landon asked after three long hours of shopping. They were carrying multiple bags from Honeydukes, The Weasley's Joke Shop, and other shops. She had felt kind of scared when she'd gone into the Weasley's shop because she didn't know if she should've been seeing them. But when she hadn't seen any sign of them, she'd relaxed and bought lots of stuff.

"Of course," she laughed. She had had quite a lot of candy during three hours so she was in a sort of 'high.' Donna smiled at Landon and for the first time in a long time, she felt normal. She didn't have a care in the world and she was having a great time. At first she'd been a little nervous because she was scared of seeing Justin, but the whole time she and Landon had been there she hadn't seen him at all. "I could use a drink. It's bloody hot out here."

"I can't believe its this hot," he said, looking up at the clear blue sky above him. "It's almost October. It usually starts cooling don about this time of year."

"Well, there is nothing usual going on today," she said. "Look at this! I'm actually having fun!"

"Did you worry you wouldn't," he asked, his smile turning into a frown. She noticed and stopped smiling and giggling.

"No, no," she said, walking closer to him until their bodies were touching. "Of course not, Landon. It's just that I haven't been able to let loose and have fun since I got here and now that I am it is wonderful."

He smiled at her and she smiled back. Their lips were getting closer and her eyes fluttered closed.

"DJ..." he said and her eyes opened wide. Instead of it being Landon, it was Justin. She gasped and pulled back, closing her eyes.

No, she thought. It's not Justin. It's Landon.

Then she opened her eyes and it was Landon again, not Justin. Good, she thought. It was just in my imagination.

"What," he asked, hurt detected in his voice? "Did I do something wrong?"

"No, uh," she stammered. "Of course you didn't do anything wrong. You've been so nice today. I don't know what's the matter. I just...I just don't know you that much."

He smiled a small smile at her and she blushed. "It's okay," he said. "I was moving too fast. I'm sorry. I really like you."

"Please don't be sorry," she said. "You've made me feel happy for once and for that I am forever thankful."

They smiled at each other and then they were walking to the Three Broomsticks again. He hesitantly reached out for her hand, turning a light red. She smiled and took hold of it.

"I'll be right back," she said while he was ordering their drinks at the Three Broomsticks. He frowned for only a quick second and then nodded, although she could still see a little bit of hurt in his eyes.

She was walking down to the Honeydukes where she realized she had left one of the four bags she had gotten when somebody pulled her into a dark alley and dragged her into the darkness. She screamed, but the kidnapper covered her mouth with his. She did what every sane girl whose mother had made them take self-defense lessons five days a week for a month would do.

She bit his hand and when he let go, she turned around and kicked him in the chest. He fell down to the floor and Donna had her wand in and jabbed into his rib cage before seeing whom her attacker was.

"D-Donna!" the boy gasped. She froze. It was Justin. "What are you doing?"

"What am I doing?" she yelled, furious by what he had done. "What the hell are you doing?"

"I just wanted to talk to you!" he said, standing up. He wiped the dirt and grime off of his back and rubbed the spot where she'd kicked him.

"So you had to pull me into a bloody dark alley and manhandle me?" she could not believe that he would do something like this and to think she loved - had loved, mind you - him once upon a time.

"I knew you wouldn't talk to me unless I got you alone," he said. "I'm sorry, Donna. I just needed to talk to you."

"YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO DRAG ME HERE! MY GOD, JUSTIN! ARE YOU THAT STUPID? THAT IS NOT HOW TO HANDLE A WOMAN!"

"All right, I get it. I shouldn't have got you here that way. I'm sorry. Will you please just let me talk to you?"

She glared at him and said, "I'm kind of on a date, if you haven't noticed."

"Actually, I have noticed and that is what I want to talk about."

"Well, I don't want to talk about it with you, Justin," she hissed. Talking to Justin was hard enough but she knew she wouldn't be able to talk to Justin about her being on a date.

"You know you shouldn't be here with Landon Harper. He's a well known player and he's not even close to being good enough for you."

"Oh and what? You are the only boy who is good enough for me? Well, excuse me, Justin, but you were the one who was making up excuses not to date me. What with all that 'I'm too old for you' shit. Landon happens to be four years older than me and I don't see him telling me he's too old for me. He is actually making me happy and all you've done is hurt me. You even made me cry. Twice."

"I never meant to hurt you and you know it. Over the last few weeks, ever since I first met you, I have been seeing and feeling things a different way. All I can think about is you and not being with you hurts like hell. I hate seeing you sad or upset. You are the most beautiful girl - woman - I have ev-."

"Don't," she whispered. "Don't you DARE do this to me, Justin! I am finally happy and for some miracle, it is without you. I don't WANT to go back to being sad and depressed and lonely ever again.

"You have had your chance with me and you blew it. The only reason why you're after me now is because you can't have me. You only want me when you can't, and don't try to fool yourself into thinking you actually do like me. You know that as soon as Landon and I aren't together anymore that you'll leave me alone until the next boy shows up and comes into my life.

"I am not some cheap girl who will run to you whenever you call. I'll admit that before I would've done anything just to be with you. But I don't anymore. I have...moved on. I am done with you, Justin. I don't need you anymore."

With those final words, she turned on her heel and left, leaving Justin standing there in the dark alley alone.
