Chapter 6: Interrupted

They we so close that Donna could almost feel him. She looked at his lips then to his eyes. His eyes were looking at her lips then her eyes fluttered closed. Donna could feel his lips so very lightly then...

The door blew open and she heard a girls saying, "DONNA! They you are..." Donna and Justin flew apart and looked at the door and saw Lily standing there. She was looking at Donna then Justin then back again. "Oh. Okay," she said with a knowing expression on her face. "I'll just leave you two alone, then. Talk to you later! Bye!" Then she left after smirking at Donna as of saying, 'I knew this would happen.'

There was silence.

Donna looked at Justin shyly and saw him still sitting on the floor, looking at the wall behind him. As if feeling her gaze on him, he spun around and Donna immediately looked to the floor.

"So," he murmured softly.

"So," she repeated.

"Yeah, um," he said jumping to his feet. He walked over to Donna, but not close up. She looked up at him and tried so hard not to look into his eyes. "I don't think we should be doing this."

She could literally feel her heart breaking at his words, but she still said, "Yeah, uh-of course." She looked back down to the floor.

"I mean, we could still be friends, of course."

"Of course."

"And I'll always be here for you if you ever need anything, you know that. But, Donna, I'm way to old for you. It would be wrong. And besides, you have enough pressure on you as it is, and you do still have seven years here and I'm leaving after next year. It - it just wouldn't work."

"Of course," she repeated. She looked up at him and tried to smile.

"Well, I - I should probably be going. Lily will probably want to talk to you."

She nodded.

"So uh. See you around."

"Yeah. See you around."

"Bye, DJ - um, Donna."

A tear fell from her eyes and she whispered, "Bye Justin" right after she heard a door close. Donna looked up and he had left her alone in the room. She backed up to the wall and fell down, bringing her knees to her chest. After letting out a breath, she finally let the tears fall.

"Donna," Lily said in a singsong voice walking up to her as soon as Donna walked in through the Gryffindor common room two hours later.

"What," Donna said, trying to match the voice but coming up short. She had been crying ever since Justin left and had finally stopped cryin only fifteen minutes earlier. She had placed a glamour charm on her face to hide her puffy, bloodshot eyes so that nobody, especially Justin, could see how much she had been crying.

Donna walked over to the couch and sat down, Lily soon sitting down next to her. Lily was beaming at her, and Donna was trying to ignore it because she knew what Lily was so happy about.

Finally, Donna gave in and looked over at Lily. "And what are you grinning about," she asked, crossing her arms over her chest.

"Oh, you know, stuff that I've seen today. One particular of you and Justin in a room. Together. Awfully close. Both of you blushing furiously. All that good stuff."

"Oh," Donna said, looking down at her lap, trying not to cry. It surprisingly worked this time.

"So tell me, Donna! What happened between you and my dear cousin?"

"Honestly, nothing," she whispered. She looked over at Lily and saw that her face had fallen. There was no smile on her face or in her eyes.

"What? When I saw you two you looked like you were about to kiss! What happened?"

"Well, I was really upset and crying because of, you know, what Nikholleta and Janessa did. You know, taking my diary and posting it up all over the entrance halls. So he came running after me and was making me feel better and then he told me that he would always be there for me and then we were getting closer and then -."

"Then...Oh come on! You can't just leave me hanging here!"

"And then...you came in and then when you left he told me that we shouldn't be doing this what with the age difference, school, and all the pressure. He told me we could always be friends and that I could always come to him. And then he...and then he left."

She looked up at Lily and saw that there were tears in her eyes. "What's wrong," Donna asked, wondering why Lily would be crying if this had happened to her.

"THIS IS ALL MY FAULT!" she wailed, tears falling from her eyes. Donna jumped back, surprised at the sudden movement by Lily. But then she moved closer to her friend and rubbed her back.

"Now it's not, Lil," Donna insisted. "It's not. How on earth do you figure this is your fault at all?"

"IF I HADN'T C-COME IN AND F-FOUND YOU AND JU-JUSTIN THEN Y-YOU AND HIM WOU-WOULD BE T-TOGETHER R-RIGHT N-N-NOW! I-I'M SO SAR-SORRY D-D-D-DONNA!!!"

"No, you are absolutely wrong. We wouldn't be together even if we had kissed. He still would've said the same thing and I would be stupid enough to go along with it. This is in no way your fault at all."

"Y-you promise?" Lily asked, wiping the tears away and looking at Donna.

Donna smiled and held her hand out with her pinky up. "Pinky promise," she said with a forced giggled.

Lily smiled at her and they linked pinkies. "I'll talk to him for you," Lily said when she stopped crying.

Donna turned red and said, "Oh, no. Please don't do that. It'll only make things worse, Lily. Besides, it's obvious he doesn't like me like I do."

Lily looked at her skeptically before finally nodding. "Fine," she said. "I won't talk to him. But promise me that you'll talk to him. When you're ready, though."

She was quiet, thinking about it. Could she tell Justin how much she liked him? Would she ever be able to talk to him again? Earlier today it had been hard enough after the almost kiss they almost shared.

Finally, after a minute, Donna nodded and whispered, "I promise."
