Chapter One-The Audition

Ginny looked at the bulletin board one Tuesday morning in January, and saw something she'd never have expected of old Albus Dumbledore. There was a notice up there about some kind of spring production. It read:

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Asks for your participation in

Our Founding Witches and Wizards

Written by Susan Bones and to be directed by Cho Chang

Auditions Thursday, January 9th at 8 p.m. in the Great Hall

See Cho or Susan for an audition form that MUST be signed by your head of house!

Her heart skipped a beat. A play? She thought to herself. Ooh, I'll bet

Harry will be in it and he'll be picked as Godric Gryffindor, I have no doubt.

Perhaps I can play Rowena, the former flame of Godric. Then I'll get to kiss him!

Lost in this reverie, she waltzed into the Great Hall for breakfast. She happily picked up some toast after she sat down and began to eat it nonchalantly, still unable to pull herself from her dream world.

Fred and George did it for her. "Oi, little sister," George said loudly in her ear. "Thinking about sending a musical to Harry this time? You must have conned Susan to write that play! We know every trick, after all, or your money's returned!" This last line was said in unison. Ginny groaned. They'd been saying that catch phrase for all the time for two weeks now. They added it to every sentence and used it in every subject. Apparently this was their new way of annoying people.perhaps they might actually be working on their slogan for Weasley's Wizard Wheezes.

"You guys always know how to ruin a mood, don't you?" she asked, annoyed. No sooner had she uttered these words than Harry and Ron showed up, hair ruffled by the wind. No doubt Angelina had called for another morning practice. Since Angie has a thing for the twins, however, Ginny mused, she probably let them off scot-free five minutes early.

"What did I do this time?" Ron asked in mock furity. Then he leaned down and planted a kiss on her forehead, to embarrass her in the hall. It worked, too; she blushed bright fuschia that Harry had seen that.

"I wasn't talking to you, Ron," she snapped, getting up in a huff to go talk to Cho Chang.

"Hey, Cho," she smiled, "can I have an audition form?" Ginny was really hoping that she could ask who else had asked for a permission form.

"Oh, sure," Cho grinned. "I expect you'll want to know who else is auditioning?" Ginny nodded. "You're to join your brother Ron, Harry, Draco Malfoy, Justin, Parvati, and Lavender, as well as Susan. There are 8 parts, so if anyone else shows up, one person may work the magic lights."

Oh, well, Ginny sighed, even if I do end up doing that, at least I'd get to be around Harry still.

"Thanks, Cho." And with that, Ginny smiled and walked away.

Thursday came all too quickly for her. She had chosen the monologue of Rowena from her packet, memorized it, and had McGonagall sign her audition form. All she had to do now was try out.

Wolfing her dinner, Ginny ran upstairs and put on the dress robes she had borrowed from her roommate Lara. The dark blue made her hair stand out. Now that she was properly attired in Ravenclaw colors, she thought that she ought to go down to the Hall and wait for Susan and Cho to arrive.

"Good luck, Ginny," Hermione told her from a table in the common room. "I bet you'll do quite well."

"Thanks, Herm," she tried to say casually. But all that came out was a squeak that sounded like, "'Anks!"

Rushing out the portrait hole door and down toward the Great Hall, she nearly bumped into a group of Hufflepuff third years and a Ravenclaw prefect.

Apologizing, she continued to walk quickly until she threw open the door to the Great Hall.

No one was there yet, so she sat down at the Gryffindor table, twiddling her thumbs. All of a sudden the door was pushed open, and Susan came in.

"Oh, hi, Ginny," Susan said softly, looking at her. "Cho told me you were trying out."

"Yeah," she smiled. "Who do you want to be in this production, since you wrote it?"

"Well, as much as I'd like to be Gabrielle, the daughter of Godric Gryffindor, I'd have to say I act more like the founder of my house, Helga Hufflepuff." Susan gave her another faint smile. Changing the subject, Susan suddenly said, "Well, as soon as the other people get here, we'll begin."

Cho chose that moment to walk through the door, with Harry, Parvati, Lavender, Justin, and Ron at her heels. "Hey, Susan. Are we ready to start?"

Susan nodded. "The only person we're missing is Draco."

"Where's Ginny Weasley?" Cho asked, looking around.

Ginny stepped out from behind Susan, since she'd been blocked by her stance. She gave Cho a smile. Nodding, Cho went to the front and stood at the front of the Hall, looking at all the students before her.

"Okay, here's the deal," she said. "I'm sure you all know the characters, but shall we review? Obviously, there's Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff, and Salazar Slytherin. But we also have the children of the founders, the next generation borne of unknown men and women. The children are Gabrielle Gryffindor, Rachel Ravenclaw, Hayden Hufflepuff, and Sukor Slytherin. This is a love story, which binds most of the founders together by their children's love. Gabrielle and Sukor fall in love, believe it or not, and Rachel and Hayden fall in love as well. And I'm sure you all know about the rumored relationship between Rowena and Godric. This will also be in this play."

"Now, I will audition you in alphabetical order, other than Susan, who will go last as playwright. So Lavender, you're up first." Nodding, Lavender came up to the place where Cho stood and began her monologue.

"I am Rachel, daughter of Rowena. Mother helped found the school I stand in today, and because of this, I sometimes wonder.what can I do? My mother changed the wizarding world, and I'll never be able to get out of her shadow. Today."

Ginny didn't listen to any more of the speech. It touched her heart; not only did Lavender play her well, but Ginny also understood the character. Overshadowed by her mother (or brothers, in Ginny's case) and not knowing how to stand out. She may have been the only girl in the family, but she was still "just another Weasley."

While Ginny was having this internal debate about her life, Draco Malfoy stepped up in front. He looked too small to be Salazar Slytherin, yet here he was, playing him to a t.

"Slytherin's the name, Salazar Slytherin. I'm sure you've heard of me, Mr. Gryffindor. Oh, I can call you Godric? All right then.Godric. Why do mudbloods deserve a place here? They don't belong, they are untrustworthy and sure to poison the purebloods of my house. I'm glad we've had this little chat, Godric. Tomorrow we'll continue, and I know that I'll be able to convince you.someday."

There was Draco, being his conceited (and yet, amazingly cute in his leather pants) self. Ginny groaned in disgust and hoped that she got to be Rowena, who rejects Salazar when he wants to marry her.

Parvati went, stumbling a few times but seemingly able to play the daughter of Rowena. Ginny would be sorry for her if she had to, playing the love interest of someone like Justin Finch-Fletchley. Justin was kind of.weird, and he hadn't trusted Harry. Or so she thought in her mind.

Harry went up there, cleared his throat, and began.

"How can you tell me non-purebloods don't belong? Of course they do. This school is about educating witches and wizards, not being bias against those who are different! I thought you agreed, Salazar. Apparently not, but perhaps the true reason you're angry is that your son is in love with my daughter, and you don't agree with what I stand for. I have no doubt you'll want to flee this school, and if you do, do so now or I shall be forced to make you."

Ginny saw the anger in Harry's eyes, not directed toward the founder of Slytherin house, but to Voldemort and the Death Eaters. Her heart welled with sadness for him, and she hoped she could be his Rowena and comfort him.

She was ready, hoping beyond hope she didn't have to go second to last. She got her wish as Cho called her name. "Ginny Weasley, will you please go next?" Ginny nodded, and walked before everyone else, from Draco smirking at her from the back corner to Harry giving her an encouraging smile, to Ron making stupid faces behind Cho and Susan's backs.

"I.I love you, Godric. I've loved you from the day I met you in the village town where I grew up, and you came to get me. We were both so young, and so foolish.but we knew what we wanted, didn't we? I still do, Godric. And what I want is you."

Bowing her head, she strode briskly past them all out the doors. She didn't even bother to watch Ron, who she knew could act if he really wanted to.

She just wanted to get away before she made a fool of herself in front of Harry.

It didn't take her long to get to the portrait. This surprised her, for she was so distracted it seemed like her feet had just carried her, her mind having no idea where it was really going.

"The Fat Lady Sings," Ginny muttered to the portrait of the Fat Lady.

"I do indeed, dear," she sang in an operatic manner, swinging forward to let Ginny in.

Ginny avoided Hermione's prying glance and went up to her dorm, hoping no one was there. Unfortunately for Ginny, Lara was sitting on her bed, looking at her friend as she opened the door.

"How'd it go?" Lara inquired.

"You don't want to know."

"That bad, eh?" she asked with a twinkle in her eye.

"No, I just got embarrassed in front of Harry, that's all."

"What else is knew?"

With this statement, Ginny got mad. "Pillow fight!" she yelled, hitting Lara with her pillow.

"Hey!" Lara yelled, but hit her right back with another feather pillow, presumeably from her own bed.

The evening Ginny had once considered a disaster dissolved from worry into a fit of giggles.

I hope you enjoyed this, and I must thank my friends and family for supporting my constant typing and lack of life outside Harry Potter. I don't have a BETA reader yet, but I'd like one (hint, hint). I have a bit of news for all Harry Potter fanfic readers: One review a day keeps the mediwizard away (another hint).
