Between the Lines

Midnight Bex

Story Summary:
Harry and Draco shag on Tuesdays. Based on Margaret Atwood's short story 'Happy Endings' this is a disjointed metafiction one shot. It's H/D... sort of.

Author's Note:
Warning: This story is written in the style of a metafic. This means that it's meant to be choppy and short and exactly as it is. I would also like to thank two wonderful people, ferretscar and Kristen. Ferretscar for encouraging me to write, even when I'm behind on betaing her fics. Kristen for convincing me that I'm not a bad writer and also to post it here.

Harry and Draco hate each other.

So it's always been.

Canonically concerned? Try A

A

Harry and Draco hate each other. They hate each other in Potions, in the corridors, in the Great Hall. They try to make each other's live hell, and succeed for the most part. They graduate and war is on. They hate each other in the street, on the battlefield, in both victory and defeat. They spend their time trying to out do the other. Harry's supposed to be killing Voldemort, but always aims for Draco instead. Harry kills Draco, and Voldemort, and many more. The war ends.

Eventually Harry dies. So the story goes.

B

Harry falls in love with Draco. It happens in Potions one afternoon, just out of the blue. Draco uses it to his advantage.

They meet in the third floor corridor twice a week. Harry always does Draco's DA homework and anything else he wants. Then Draco fucks Harry and gets dressed again. He dresses himself in the opposite order he got undressed. Harry always undresses himself. He doesn't particularly like the sex, but wants Draco to think he does so he'll stay longer. Draco doesn't care. Harry keeps hoping Draco will grow attached, he doesn't.

Harry discovers crying is bad for you. He looks haggard and becomes withdrawn. His friends start to worry. They think he's been dreaming about Voldemort again, but he hasn't. He couldn't tell them the truth. Slytherins and Gryffindors don't mix, especially not Malfoys and Potters.

One day Draco doesn't show up. It's never happened before and it hurts Harry.

Harry hears rumors about Draco dating Pansy, about them going to Hogsmeade on the weekend. This hurts Harry too. It's not Pansy that gets to him, it the fact that Draco took her out. Harry's fed up. He ends it with Draco, breaking his own heart but leaving Draco's intact.

After graduation, Draco marries Pansy.

Everything continues like A.

C

During the war, Draco falls for Harry. It happens mid-battle and prevents the Death Eaters from winning. Harry's in love with Ron. He's moved on.

Ron and Harry are apart a lot during the war. Ron's an Unspeakable, but Harry's only an Auror. Draco and Harry fuck on Tuesdays. It's the only day they both have free.

Draco's married to Pansy. They're happy, their life is perfect and dangerous and evil. They have things in common and equal (or nearly) heritages. Draco and Harry don't. They're from different worlds, but Draco sometimes wishes they weren't.

One Tuesday Ron gets home early. He and Harry have a long night of 'I missed you' sex. Draco, who has a portkey to Harry's apartment, arrives for their usual night. He sees Harry and Ron entwined on the bed, oblivious and wrapped in each other. Draco takes out his wand and aims the killing curse. Ron dies. Harry lives (again) and kills Draco.

Pansy marries Blaise Zabini shortly after.

Most everything else proceeds as A.

D

Pansy and Blaise are the perfect couple. They're content and snobby and the embodiment of pureblood marriage.

The rest of the story continues as A.

E

Yes, but Blaise is still a Death Eater. Pansy's sympathetic and caring. One day he doesn't come back. Pansy mourns and lives to old age. She dies. If you like, it could be "Pansy" and "has cancer" and "dies". It doesn't matter it still goes the same.

The rest goes like story A.

F

If this doesn't work for you, change their names and houses and alliances. It doesn't matter, the stories all end the same as A with a little variation in between.

As much as A and B and C and D and E and F differ, don't be confused, they all end the same.

Harry kills Draco. Harry kills Draco. Harry kills Draco.

So much for between the lines.
