Darkness Falls
Act 5
Old Memories
INT. HOGWARTS - HOSPITAL WING - NIGHT
Later that night, Harry sits in a chair next to the bed of a sleeping Ginny Weasley. The rest of the hospital wing is empty and quiet.
Harry reaches into his robes, and pulls out a small book. It is the photo album that Hagrid gave to him at the end of Harry's first year at Hogwarts. He opens it and begins leafing through the pages.
We see pictures of Harry's parents, pictures of Harry as a baby, and Harry, Ron, and Hermione at Hogwarts.
We also see team pictures of the six Gryffindor Quidditch teams that Harry was a part of. They are holding the house cup in all but two, the teams from his first two years.
Harry continues to leaf through the book, and we come to several pictures of Harry and Ginny, taken during his last two years at Hogwarts.
We see Harry and Ginny, along with Ron and Hermione, on Christmas morning in their Weasley jumpers, Harry and Ginny looking serious right before a Quidditch match, and Harry and Ginny enjoying butterbeers at the Three Broomsticks. Harry smiles as he remembers those times.
His eyes narrow in confusion as he flips another page.
HARRY
What's this?
He looks closer at one of the pictures as he notices that the picture is out of sequence.
It isn't one of he and Ginny, but one taken of his parents out on the Hogwarts grounds, next to the lake.
HARRY (CONT'D)
How'd this get into the back?
He looks at the picture for a moment, and then down at the book, at the picture that was next to it. His eyes narrow quizzically.
He then sets the photo of his parents next to the picture of he and Ginny. They are in the exact same pose, and in the exact same spot, as James and Lily Potter are in the other picture.
HARRY (CONT'D)
Weird.
GINNY
What's weird?
Harry looks up startled.
GINNY (CONT'D)
(apologetically)
Sorry.
Harry moves his chair closer to her bed, and hands her the album.
HARRY
Look at those photos.
(points to the photos)
These two.
GINNY
(smiles)
That's your parents!
HARRY
Yeah.
GINNY
I've never seen a photo of them
before, besides that old one of the
original Order of the Phoenix.
HARRY
Really?
Ginny nods as she looks at the photos. She looks over at Harry appraisingly.
GINNY
You look just like your father.
Harry nods.
GINNY (CONT'D)
Sorry. You've probably heard that
before, haven't you?
HARRY
(grins)
A few times.
He leans in closer and points down to the photos.
HARRY (CONT'D)
Look, they're in the exact same spot,
in the exact same pose as we are in
this photo.
GINNY
Hey, you're right!
HARRY
Don't you think that's a little odd?
GINNY
Not really. I bet there are
hundreds of people who have had
their photos taken in that exact
spot by the lake. It's a favorite
spot for love....
(blushes)
Well, for people to take photos
together.
HARRY
That's true.
GINNY
(smiles)
Do they remind you of anyone?
Harry looks a little closer. He smiles in understanding.
HARRY
I never noticed that. I guess we
do resemble them.
Ginny continues to look at the picture.
GINNY
You're Mum's beautiful.
Harry nods, smiling sadly.
GINNY (CONT'D)
Do you miss them?
HARRY
Every day.
Ginny smiles sadly.
HARRY (CONT'D)
Do you think it's strange, missing
people you never met?
GINNY
Not when it's your parents.
Especially after the way your
horrible Aunt and Uncle treated you.
She frowns darkly, and Harry is suddenly reminded of the time they faced off against Umbridge and her Inquisitional Squad.
HARRY
They aren't too bad anymore. At
least they're civil towards me now.
(pause)
Of course it's probably because I
don't live there anymore.
Ginny puts her hand to her mouth and yawns.
HARRY (CONT'D)
I'm sorry. I'm keeping you up.
Ginny reaches out and takes hold of his hand.
GINNY
It's okay. Please don't go.
HARRY
Er, all right.
She rolls over onto her side and smiles up at him.
GINNY
Harry, will you do me a favor?
HARRY
(grins)
Anything.
GINNY
This'll sound kind of odd, but will
you read to me?
Harry looks at her in surprise.
HARRY
Okay...but I don't seem to....
GINNY
(smiles)
Have a book?
She pulls her wand from underneath her covers.
GINNY (CONT'D)
Accio book!
Several seconds later, a book flies through the open door and into her hands.
GINNY (CONT'D)
I left it in the library.
She hands it to Harry.
HARRY
Romeo and Juliet?
GINNY (CONT'D)
It's a Muggle story. My Dad found
it and gave it to me a few years
ago. You know much he loves Muggle
stuff.
HARRY
(grins)
I've heard of it. We studied it in
school, before I came to Hogwarts.
GINNY
Oh, right. I forgot you went to a
Muggle school before you came here.
Harry opens the book.
HARRY
Ready?
Ginny nods, grinning happily.
HARRY (CONT'D)
Romeo and Juliet, by William
Shakespeare....
Ginny closes her eyes contentedly as Harry begins to read.
FADE TO:
Hermione and Ron walk through the halls of Hogwarts, on late night patrol.
The halls are dark and deserted, as the students, not allowed out of bed at night, are in their dormitories, fast asleep.
They pass by ARGUS FILCH, who grumbles as he passes the former students. His cat, Mrs. Norris, follows in his wake.
Hermione and Ron smirk at each other as the caretaker passes out of site.
They eventually find themselves at the painting of the FAT LADY, where the entrance to the Gryffindor House resides.
RON
I sure wouldn't mind seeing the old
common room again.
Hermione nods as Ron leans against the wall.
RON (CONT'D)
Too bad we don't know the password.
HERMIONE
(grins)
Actually, I do know the password.
RON
What? How?
HERMIONE
Collin Creevey told me this
afternoon. He invited us up for
the end of term party.
RON
That's what you two were talking
about!
(pause)
Why didn't you tell me? I would
have liked to go!
HERMIONE
(sternly)
It wouldn't have looked good Ron.
(paused)
We're not here for parties after
all.
RON
I know, but we could have at least
stopped by.
Hermione grins slightly.
HERMIONE
Why don't we stop by now?
RON
Really?
HERMIONE
(shrugs)
Why not? We can always say that we
were just making sure the students
were okay.
Ron grins and they step in front of the Fat Lady, who is fast asleep. Ron politely clears his throat.
The Fat Lady opens one eye, and then shakes her head, frowning.
FAT LADY
Back for more mischief are you?
Ron smirks at her.
RON
Just open the door please.
She raises her eyebrows imperiously.
FAT LADY
Password?
Ron glances at Hermione. She looks back sheepishly.
HERMIONE
(apologetically)
I'm sorry Ron.
RON
Eh?
Hermione turns to the Fat Lady.
HERMIONE
Weasley is our King.
The Fat Lady nods and the painting swings open.
Hermione glances over at Ron, who is frowning sullenly.
RON
I hate Malfoy.
HERMIONE
Come on.
They head into the Gryffindor common room.
INT. HOGWARTS - GRYFFINDOR COMMON ROOM
Ron and Hermione enter a dark, quiet, and very empty Gryffindor Common room. The only light in the room is coming from a small fire in the hearth.
RON
(disappointed)
Some party.
HERMIONE
Sorry. I guess we should have come
by sooner.
RON
It's okay.
They look around at the empty room.
Red and gold banners line the walls of the circular room. Comfortable couches and plush chairs sit facing the fireplace at one end of the room.
RON (CONT'D)
It hasn't changed has it?
HERMIONE
Not really. But it's not like it
could change that much in one year.
RON
Some things have changed....
His gaze stops on a secluded corner of the room.
RON (CONT'D)
Some things haven't.
He walks over to the corner of the room, and leans against the sofa there.
HERMIONE
What did you say?
Ron doesn't answer her.
HERMIONE (CONT'D)
Ron?
RON
Do you remember that night Hermione?
(pause)
Do you remember what I told you?
Hermione realizes the direction the conversation is heading, and looks away sadly.
HERMIONE
(softly)
Ron...don't.
Ron turns to face her.
RON
(determinedly)
I still love you Hermione. I always
have.
She sits down on the arm of a padded armchair.
HERMIONE
It's just this place talking. It's
just bringing up old memories.
Ron walks over to her.
RON
It's more than that!
(pause)
This morning, when I saw that you
were hurt....
HERMIONE
Ron...it won't work.
RON
What won't work?
HERMIONE
Us!
RON
(sadly)
But why?
Hermione looks down, but says nothing. She stays that way for several seconds before Ron breaks the silence.
RON (CONT'D)
You're not going to answer me are
you?
Hermione looks up at him, unable to speak.
RON (CONT'D)
(frowns)
Right...I guess I still don't
deserve an explanation!
Ron walks toward the entrance.
RON (CONT'D)
(darkly)
I'm going back out on patrol. I'll
see you later.
Hermione sits down in a padded, oversized chair, and hugs her knees to her chest as she stares off into the distance.
INT. HOGWARTS - HALLWAYS
Harry and Ron walk through the deserted halls of Hogwarts the next morning.
Rain can be seen through the windows, pouring down from the sky.
The students, depressed by the loss of their last weekend at Hogwarts, remain mostly in their dorms.
Harry and Ron pass Neville and Hermione as they patrol the halls. Ron and Hermione pointedly look away from one another.
Harry glances at Neville as they pass by each other, and raises his eyebrows in a questioning look. Neville shrugs.
They continue their patrol.
INT. HOGWARTS - GUEST SUITE - PARLOR
Harry watches secretly from the bedroom, the door slightly ajar, as Ron sits alone on the couch, staring into the fire, lost in thought.
Ron looks up, but then looks away, as Hermione walks in, just back from her shift on watch.
She frowns as she passes Ron, but does not look at him.
Ron stands wordlessly and walks out the door as he begins his shift on watch.
Harry shakes his head and quietly closes his door.
