Never Had a Dream Come True

Never had a dream come true,

Till the day that I found you.

Even though I pretend that I've moved on,

You'll always be my baby.

Never found the words to say

You're the one I think about each day.

And I know no matter where life takes me to,

A part of me

Will always be

With you.

Sirius looked up as he heard the common room door slam open. It was Lily. "Hey, Lils, what's - " he began casually, but Lily ran past him and up the stairs, " - up?" he finished weakly. A moment later, a frantic-looking James rushed in.

Have you seen a furious, rampaging, yet still surprisingly beautiful redhead come through here?" he asked breathlessly. Sirius nodded. "Which way did she go?" Sirius pointed up the girls' stairs. James groaned and collapsed onto the couch next to Sirius.

"What happened?" Sirius asked, trying not to sound like he was utterly astonished by how his friend was acting, which was very hard to do because he was.

"She thinks I - she thinks I two-timed her," James choked.

"Did you?" Sirius asked suspiciously.

"NO!" James said loudly. "It was that stupid Jill Richards, she was after me again..."

"Have you talked to her?"

"Tried. Result?" James waved his hand vaguely to the girls' stairs. "She slaps me and runs off."

"Lily's not stupid, James," Sirius said, putting an arm around his friend. "She's bound to come back."

James threw his hands into the air. "I hope so, Sir, I really hope so."

Lily sobbed openly into her pillow. James was such a - a liar. A player. A downright pain in the you-know-where. How could she have fallen for such a half-baked scheme?

The door opened slowly. "Lily?" said a gentle voice.

"Beat it, Bella," Lily said angrily.

"Do you have any idea why James is down there banging his head against the wall?"

"Probably because he got caught in one of his little games. Tell him I hope he breaks his neck."

"Umm, I'm not sure, Lils, but I don't think that will cheer him up."

"Good," Lily said profoundly, hiding herself under her blankets with no remorse.

"Lily, I know James isn't a saint, but you've never been this mad before. What did he do this time?"

"He - he - and Jill." Lily choked. She buried her face in her pillow again.

"I'll go talk to him, Lily, I'm sure it was a mistake..."

"Fine, but tell him I hope he dies!" Bella heard Lily shout, although the pillow muffled her voice.

"I'll let him know, Lily, but I think we all know you don't really mean it." Bella left without another word, leaving a sobbing Lily behind her.

When Bella went downstairs again, James was still banging his head against the wall. "How'd it go?" Sirius asked, watching his friend's head go back and forth.

"She hopes you break your neck," she informed James sullenly. He groaned and started to bang his head harder.

"I don't think actually doing that will help, Jamie-boy," Sirius told him. James moaned and sat on the couch.

"I - am - such - an - idiot," he said through gritted teeth.

"James, go talk to her," Bella begged. "I tried, but... she'll listen to you."

James looked up. "You think so?" Sirius opened his mouth, but Bella elbowed him sharply in the stomach.

"We know so," Bella smiled.

"I'll try... but if I die up there, it will be your fault. I want you to pay for my funeral. And Sirius, those twenty Galleons you owe me, give them to cousin Tom, you met him, right? Tell Remus that it was not suicide to talk to an angry Lily, tell him that it was your fault and you should be charged with first-degree murder. Now, about my epitaph, I don't want anything cheesy, like - "

"Just go!" they both said, pushing him up the stairs. James took a deep breath and opened the door to the seventh-year girls' dormitory silently. He saw a figure huddled on the bed, crying into a pillow. His heart broke into a million pieces right then and there.

"Lily?" he whispered.

"Go away, Potter!" Lily said loudly, throwing the pillow at him. He dodged it and sat down on the edge of her bed.

"Lily, please, I really have to tell you something... it'll only take a minute..."

"You have thirty seconds," Lily said, looking at the wall. "Whenever you're ready."

James took a deep breath. "Lily," he said solemnly, "I am really, really, really sorry I ever made you think I cheated on you, because I didn't, Jill just gets a little overexcited sometimes, and I'm sorry for that, but I would never, ever try to hurt you, Lily, because I love you, and only you, and I'm sorry but I really had to tell you that, and I'll go to hell now so you don't have to waste the energy of wishing me there." James turned, got up, and walked towards the door. Lily turned slowly.

"James?" she said in a barely audible whisper. James turned and looked at her with sad but incredibly firm eyes. Lily got up and walked into his arms. "I love you too."

James just smiled and put his arms around her. "I know."
