Chapter 2: Midnight Haunting

Draco Malfoy walked out into the cool September night. He needed to think. His father had asked him to join the Dark Lord's circle, to follow in his footsteps after his last year at Hogwarts. He didn't want to but how could he refuse without being killed? He sat down under a tree looking out across the lake. The moon was high, full, and bright. It really was a beautiful night. He sighed lying back in the soft grass to look up at the sky. The stars were twinkling like fireflies in the black sky. That's when singing reached his ears.

"Hold on to me, love

You know I can't stay long

All I wanted to say was I love you and I'm not afraid

Can you hear me?

Can you feel me in your arms?

Holding my last breath"

Draco stood listening to where the sound was coming from. It was a feminine voice and it was beautiful. The pain reached his and mingled there.

"Safe inside myself

Where are my thoughts of you,

Sweet ruptured life

It ends here tonight"

The voice was coming from his right, but the right was his lake. He turned gazing out across the lake to see a girl. She was glowing slightly in the pale moonlight and gliding across the lake. He moved closer to get a better look.

"I miss the winter

I world of fragile things

Look for me in the white forest

Hiding in a hollow tree

Come and find me"

She was beautiful but transparent, a ghost. Draco stood still staring at her. He had never seen the ghost before. Her hair was a rich blonde that fell to her waist dripping water as if she had just dove into the lake below her. She had been dead for a long time judging on her cloths. Had she been here?

"I know you hear me

I can taste it in your tears

Holding my last breath

Safe inside myself

Are all my thoughts of you,

Sweet ruptured life

It ends here tonight"

Draco waded out into the water not caring that his robes were getting wet. He hurriedly discarded them because the water was weighing him down.

"Losing your eyes to disappear

You pray your dreams will leave you here

But still you wait to know the truth

No one's there

Say good-night

Don't be afraid

Calling me, calling me

As you fade to black

Say good-night

Holding my last breath"

She glanced over at him and stopped singing. She started to hurriedly glide away.

"Wait!" Draco shouted to her. There was something intriguing about her, something pulling him towards her. She stopped before turning to look at him. Her eyes were shining with tears. She was dripping with water that never touched that was below her. He swam towards her.

"Please don't," she said looking worriedly at the water and then him. He stopped his grey eyes traveling over her.

"I can swim," Draco told her.

"So could I," she told him softly. He met her sad blue eyes and for once his smirk left his features. She didn't look any older than he was.

"What were you singing?" He asked swimming backwards to where he could touch. She glanced at him hesitantly. He looked familiar, too familiar.

"Some Muggle song," Liana retorted. "Called My Last Breath," she told him.

"It was beautiful," he told her giving a slight smile. "You have a wonderful voice." Liana for once was glad that she was dead so that the boy couldn't see her blush.

"Thank you," she told him shaking herself. She was not to get attached. Students left and forgot.

"What's your name?" Draco asked her.

"Liana Porter," she told him after hesitating for a minute. She hadn't had a conversation with a student for about ten years.

"I'm Draco, Draco Malfoy," he told her. Liana froze, her eyes widening. No wonder he looked familiar. She turned. "Wait, where are you going?" He asked. She kept on gliding closing her eyes shut tightly; tears were already running down her cheek. Draco stared after the ghost. Usually people stayed to talk with a Malfoy unless it was the name that chased her off. He decided that tomorrow his father would be getting an owl.
