Kissing Ferrets

Luna sat in the corridor, finishing a Potions essay. Her eyes drooped in drowsiness, and her quill moved slowly across the paper. She would have been done with it ages ago, but someone had, as usual, taken her belongings. Luna sighed, though she was quite used to it. Still, that didn't do anything to ease the cramps she was getting as she stayed in the hall, when she knew very well that she should have been in bed asleep.

She stretched her legs out, feeling slight more hope, as she was almost complete with her assignment. But before she could write another word, a heavy weight fell over her feet, and Luna heard a loud crashing sound and a soft groan as someone tripped over her outstretched legs.

"What are you doing?" Luna looked up to see the owner of the sneering voice. There, lying on the ground in front of her, was the icy scowl of a blonde-haired boy.

"...Hello Draco." She spoke casually, as though they were discussing the weather. Draco only glared while he watched her as she focused her attention back to the parchment in her lap, and scrawled the last few words on her essay.

Luna looked back at Draco, and her moonlike eyes were met with his steely ones. He glowered at her, but she only stared blankly. His aura of complete loathing both amused and intrigued her, perhaps even more so when she saw his scowl hesitate. True, he had an air of hate, but Luna had noticed something peculiar in Draco's typical stance. There was less of the usual haughty confidence; there was something in his expression that Luna could have sworn looked almost...hurt. Besides, why else would he have tripped--there was no way Draco could have missed her...perhaps he was lost in thought?

Gazing at him in her own thoughts, Luna could now see a definite contemplative look upon Draco's face. "What's wrong?"

Startled out of the silence, Draco gave Luna a dirty look as he spoke calmly. "What makes you think anything's wrong?"

"I...nothing," she stumbled with words, having expected him to deny her claim, rather than question it.

"Then there's nothing to worry about, now is there?" His stark dismissal had surprised her, but it only further strengthened her theory. Maybe he wouldn't acknowledge her suspicions, but Luna could now tell without doubt that there was indeed something wrong with Draco. If there truly had been nothing the matter, he likely would have acted more surprised. Instead he had dropped the subject, but subtly. So as not to make him look as if he didn't want to talk about it...whatever "it" was. Luna nearly grinned. He was good...

But whether he was good or not, Luna was determined to get the truth out of him. She looked Draco in the eyes, and stated easily, "What if there was something to worry about?"

His freezing stare hardened even deeper as he looked her over. "What if it's none of your business?" Luna nearly choked. Why did she suddenly find all of this funny?

She shrugged in response, and stood up, dusting off her robes. Knowing it would catch him off his guard, Luna put her hand out towards him. Just as she suspected, Draco did nothing but stare. And stare he did indeed, as if he was clueless as to what was being held centimeters away from him.

Luna sighed, as she might have sighed at a small child. "It's a hand Draco," she explained, still talking as if to a two-year-old. "You're supposed to take it."

Luna's eyes were met once again with those frigid sphere's of his. "I know what it is, Lovegood," Draco spat out her surname, and, before Luna was able to utter a sound, he pulled himself up and stood. At his full height he looked down upon Luna, the cold glare perpetually glued on his face.

There was an odd silence with which Luna broke with a question she only hoped could be answered. "Well, are you going to tell me what's the matter?"

He opened his mouth to retort, but, on second thought, closed it again, simply glowering down at her. "No...are you going to leave me alone?"

"No," her cheerfulness echoed in his ears. "And I'll thank you to be a little less rude about it."

"And I'll thank you to sod off!"

Luna started to reply, but thought better of it. The boy was clearly getting irritated, and pursuing the topic any further would likely just make him worse. But surely there was a way to get him to talk....

The idea struck Luna so suddenly and so simply that she almost fell down. Taking a hopeful breath, Luna opened her mouth, hoping it would work.

"I'm sorry."

It was so simple...yet so brilliant, she had to admit. For not a moment after she had apologized, Draco's head tuned towards her sharply, and his eyes narrowed in a cross between confusion and suspicion. "What?!"

Luna could tell that he was still dubious. "I'm sorry," she clarified, perfectly aware that he knew exactly what she had said. And then, without further adieu, Luna turned away and took a step forward; she could only pray that he would react. But her prayers we soon answered as...

"Wait!"

Luna stopped, spinning slowly, so she was standing face-to-face with Draco. There was no trace of his former expression in his eyes. He was no longer glaring; he simply looked confused. Perhaps this is what startled Luna...but mostly, she just found it disturbing. Who was this boy to have had never heard an apology? Because that was certainly what it looked like. Luna cocked her head.

"...Yes?"

"I..." He didn't seem to know what to say...or what to think. "It's..." Draco shook his head. "Nothing."

"Draco...." Now it was Luna's turn to be confused. "What's wrong?"

Draco continued to shake his head, looking at the floor. "Nothing," he muttered. "You'd just think it was stupid."

"Or perhaps you just think it's stupid."

Draco flinched and swerved around as if to leave. Luna could tell that she had hit close to the truth. "Draco..." He turned. Luna touched his cheek softly as their eyes met. "What is it?" she pressed.

Draco sighed deeply, his gaze fleeting from hers. "Fine."

But when Luna looked up, the cold fury was again swirling in his eyes. "My girlfriend says that I kiss like a ferret."

"...what?" Her first reaction was how Draco's girlfriend knew what it was like to kiss a ferret, but then she decided that she didn't want to know.

"My girlfriend says that I kiss like a ferret!" Draco was openly glaring now, "And don't make me say it again!"

"...Pansy?" Draco apparently had taken Luna's pause for amusement, as his cheekbone tightened. But even that couldn't strip him of his trademark sarcasm.

"No...my other girlfriend." Draco rolled his eyes. "Yes, Pansy!"

Luna stared in amazement, wondering how someone could have such abrupt mood swings and continue to maintain sanity...but then, who said that he did?

"...how does Pansy know what kissing a ferret is like?"

Draco stopped in thought. He looked as if he might reply courteously for a change, "I..." but then--

"How am I supposed to know?!"

Luna shrugged. She didn't want him to get angry again. "Well...do you kiss like a ferret?"

He looked at her blankly. "How the heck am I supposed to know?!" he nearly screamed. "Do you really think I go around kissing myself?!"

"...I supposed not," Luna said discreetly, "But..." she started, "Pansy, Draco? You're really going to trust her opinion? ...I never did think she was very smart..." she looked thoughtful.

Draco raised an eyebrow. "Are you insinuating that I need a second opinion?"

Luna gaped at him. "No! I mean....I..." she struggled to deny without sounding like she was covering up the truth.

Draco smirked, interrupting her, "And I suppose you're also implying that you're the one to do it...?"

Luna's mouth dropped, aghast. "I..." she didn't bother trying to finish.

Draco walked towards her, his eyes glazing with...Luna halted her thoughts...was it...passion? Luna's chest rose and fell heavily, as she took sharp intakes of breath. What was he doing...?

"Draco, what--"

Draco ignored her, reaching his hand down to her and caressing the side of Luna's face. "All right, Luna," he whispered, his lips closing in on her cheek. Had it not been for the present situation, Luna would have pondered the use of her first name. However, she was not in a pondering frame of mind at the moment.

Draco hissed in her ear. "You asked for it..."

Wide-eyed with bewilderment, Luna gasped softly as she felt Draco's mouth slide away from her ear, sliding up her neck and cheek until it reached her lips, in a deep kiss.

His mouth enveloped Luna's, until she could hardly breathe. Sensing her discomfort, Draco drew back slowly, staring at Luna with his now fiery eyes. Their eyes locked, and he plunged into her mouth again. Luna closed her eyes as Draco's arms encircled her and she nestled into his grasp.

Breathless, Luna gazed into Draco's deep eyes. He glanced back at her and smirked. But no sooner did Luna see that famous smirk of his did she feel his soft lips brushing over her own.

Luna sighed in comfort. If this was kissing a ferret, then she must start making a habit of it...
