Cho Chang and the Mystery of Harry Potter

Chapter 1

My 5th Year

Me mum sent me this diary for Christmas, since I'm not coming home, due to the Yule Ball.

As I walked up the corridors, chatting with my friends, I realized that I needed a date to the Yule Ball coming up. I can't imagine who I would choose.

Then, as if destiny would choose itself, Cedric Diggory was walking my way. I had had a crush on him forever.

Or maybe it was just my eyes. The handsome Hufflepuff seeker could not possibly be walking towards a completely ordinary Ravenclaw seeker like me! Well, maybe seeker wasn't ordinary, but...

Yet he was. Cedric Diggory was walking towards me! I hadn't realized that I had been staring out into space until Padma Patil passed me and said, "Cho, umm...what are you looking at?"

"Huh?" I snapped out of my dreamy trance and turned around, to become face-to-face with Padma. I can't imagine what Cedric would've thought if he actually knew I was staring into space about him! "Oh, thanks."

"Sure," she said. "You know, maybe you should ask him to the Yule Ball..."

"She doesn't have to," came a handsome voice from behind me, cutting Padma off, "Because I have come to ask her."

I squealed with delight. Cedric Diggory was asking me, Cho Mihya Chang, to the Yule Ball! "Yes," I said, blushing madly, which actually looked somewhat red on my tan face. "I'd love to go with you!"

"Great!" he said, flushing with pleasure. "I'll - uh - meet you in the Great Hall, then I suppose?"

"Okay," I breathed.

"Okay, then. See you then," he said coolly, walking away, grinning.

"Buh-bye," I whispered, smiling weakly at his departing back. Cedric Diggory made everyone (the girls, at least) weak in the knees.

***

I remember last year during the Gryfifndor/Ravenclaw Quidditch match where young Harry Potter tried the Wronski Feint on me. Well, it almost worked. I didn't end up crashing into the ground like he expected me to.

Now, you must be wondering, why am I talking about Quidditch? Well, at the end of that match (which, unfortunately, Ravenclaw lost--partially because Harry's broom is a Firebolt and my Comet Two-Sixty looked like a joke compared to his broom--I don't like to admit it), Harry and I shook hands. I wanted to be a good sport, you see. When we shook hands, there was, well, like a - what do Muggles call it? - electra, electire? -Oh, electricity - a little shock of electricity between us. But, why? Sure, he was a touch handsome, but I can't imagine why I would feel a-a...connection...between...between...us! I mean, please! Who in their right mind would think of a "connection" between The Boy Who Lived and boring, plain Cho Chang?! (Hey, that rhymed...) HOW? As far as I'm concerned, Harry Potter is completely out of the picture...or is he?

Anyway, when we shook hands, I smiled at him--why did I do that?--and he smiled back. Why? I didn't like him--or did I? No, I would never fancy him!--or would I? Oh, my brain really needs to shut up!

*** Next Day ***

Oh, joy. I looked at Harry Potter today in the hallway and found that I had this feverish feeling. But how?

Oh, no. Don't think so! I will never, not ever, I repeat not EVER like Harry Potter as more than just a Quidditch opponent! Don't even THINK about it! I like Cedric and I'm going to the Yule Ball with him. That's who I like! NOT HARRY!

Okay, so maybe Harry is kind of cute. And maybe he is kind of nice. But I DON'T LIKE HIM!!!

Did you hear me? (Well, probably not, since this is written.) I doubt you did.

You're not understanding. I don't like Harry.

I won't.

Honestly.

*** Two days later ***

Greater joy. Harry asked me to the Yule Ball today. I said no, because I was going with Cedric. I think I actually sounded as sorry as I said I was. He looked disappointed.

I think, that one day I will regret this decision.

Maybe.

*** Next Day ***

Yule Ball tonight! I'm probably going to spend five hours getting ready.

*** two hours later ***

Guess not.

*** five minutes later ***

I'm just so anxious. The anxiety is killing me! Bloody time! Why can't time go faster???

*** thirty seconds later ***

Why can't time go faster??? ( I think I just said that. Oh, well.)

*** forty-five minutes later ***

Yay! Finally some time has passed! I amused myself for the past forty-five minutes by reading a romance novel by Amanda Ecclesiae.

Now, I am incredibly bored. What am I to do for three-and-a-half hours? I hope I'll find something to do.

*** twelve seconds later ***

No luck.

*** twenty-two seconds later ***

I think I'll look up Amanda Ecclesiae's name and see if it means anything in Latin. Accio Latin to English Dictionary!

*** three minutes and twelve seconds later ***

Turns out that "Amanda" is an English derivative of the Latin word "amare," which means "to love or like." The word "ecclesiae" in English means "churches." ... "to love churches???"

Now I'm bored again.

*** fifteen minutes later ***

Played wizard's chess with Padma Patil. She won! I think I'll play her again.

*** thirty-two minutes later ***

Longer game, more agony. Padma won yet again!

Rematch, Padma? You're going down!

*** two minutes later ***

Padma used the Fool's Move on me. Shorter game, more agony.

Okay, so I'm not a fantastic chess player. Oh, well. Luna Lovegood, a younger Ravenclaw (I'm not sure if she's a second year or a third year), is quite good for her age, around my level. I wonder if she'll play chess with me?

*** one and a half seconds later ***

Luna is reading over my shoulder. She said yes. Well, then, Luna, let's play!

*** fifty-seven minutes later ***

Scowl. I was doing so well, too!

Luna custard-creamed me...except minus the custard! I'm going to regret this...rematch?

*** thirteen minutes later ***

I WON! I WON! I WON!

I FINALLY BEAT SOMEONE AT CHESS!

Well, OK, so Luna Lovegood is about 2 or 3 years younger than me, but so WHAT?

She's just as good!

There's no difference!

She's really good. I think I'll ask her to teach me a few things.

*** twenty-six minutes later ***

Luna taught me a few things that she learned from Ginny Weasley, Ronald Weasley's younger sister and my two best friends Fred and George's younger sister.

Fred is going with Angelina, since I'm going with Cedric. To the Yule Ball, I mean. Actually, Fred is going to ask Angelina out--on a date to Hogsmeade, for example.

Right now I've got about an hour to spare. I'm going to read a book called Seven Days. It's a horror story, really. I picked it up in a Muggle bookstore similar to Flourish and Blotts called "Books Through the Ages" in Muggle London. (Granger, Harry's friend, would love that bookstore!) I found it over the summer and have been meaning to read it when I had the time. Well, the time is staring me in the face right now. I can't stand another chess game.

*** twenty-four minutes, three and a half seconds later ***

Wow. I mean wow!

That is one hell of a scary novel.

How did that author find the guts to write something like that?

Seven Days is a really scary book about these teenagers who die from watching a movie. I've only gotten to the part where the girl who dies, her mother sees her in a closet with this black stuff rushing down her face. That is really scary. I could never write something like that.

As a matter of fact, this journal is the only thing I actually CAN decently write.

My writing bloody stinks.

*** nine minutes later ***

Finally! Only half an hour left! I'd better leave in a few minutes.

*** two minutes later ***

Scratch that. I'll leave in 12 minutes.

*** two minutes later ***

Sigh. What will I do? I was pacing around the Ravenclaw common room approximately twelve seconds ago. Bloody quill! It's not working properly. Oh, gee, NOW it starts working again!

What am I going to do now?

Great. My new dress got burned. I backed into a candle. Better fix that! Reparo! Come on, work! Reparo! Scowl! It's not working! Reparo! Reparo! Excuse me, I have some business to attend to.

*** ten minutes later ***

Finally got that bloody burn to be fixed. Gosh! That sure took awhile!

Well, I'm going to head down to the Great Hall now. Don't want to back into any more blue-and-bronze candles in the Ravenclaw common room.

*** Next Morning ***

Okay, here's how the Yule Ball went:

First, we had dinner. Harry, his date, Parvati Patil (Padma's Gryffindor twin), Cedric and I all sat at the same table. Harry avoided eye contact with me. Cedric and I were engaged in conversation, while Harry was somehow distracted from Parvati.

After dinner, the champions and their partners started off dancing, and afterwards, all the other students joined in. I was surprised at how well Harry could dance...wait...Parvati was leading him...hehe...

After six dances, Cedric and I were worn out. We went outside for a walk.

We sat down on a bench and talked. Actually, I let Cedric do most of the talking, considering the fact that I didn't have much to say.

We had a fantastic time overall. It was like magic. No, I don't mean witchcraft. I mean, deep down, where there was no physical magic in me, there was a sort of sentimental magic in my heart. It was a fantastic feeling.

Well, I must ask myself why I spoke about Harry so much. Cedric and I are dating, not Harry and I! Yet here I am, thinking so much about him. I think I'm going insane!!!

Oh, and a confession to make:

I felt bad for Harry because he knew nothing about the egg and yet Cedric did. And Harry told him all about the dragons! I convinced Cedric to clue Harry in on the night of the Yule Ball. Why did I do that? I am so weird.

Well, I must go now. I want to finish Seven Days.

*** February 14 (two months later) ***

Today was Valentine's Day! I received a valentine from Cedric and I sent one to him. Mine said:

"I love you forever

What I would do without you I know not.

Stay with me always,

I love you forever.

"I love you eternally

My love for you shall never die.

Stay with me always,

I love you eternally.

"I love you with my life.

My love for you is undying.

I would die for you.

Do not leave me stranded,

For I have not an idea of what I would do without you.

My love shall never die,

Never die,

Never die...

"I love you forever

What I would do without you I know not.

Stay with me always,

I love you forever.

"I love you Cedric! Love always,

Cho Chang."

But what I received from him was unbelievable.

Cedric sent me a single red rose, to signify love. The rose contained a single thorne. A card attached to it said:

"To you, my dear, my Cho, my loved one,

To you, this rose I give.

They say beautiful things are hard to get.

This rose was very difficult indeed hard to get,

But it was nothing in comparison to you.

You see, although a rose with a thorne is hard to get,

And although it is beautiful,

It could never be harder to get than you,

Because the more beautiful a thing is,

The harder it is to get

The more easily it attracts people

The easier it is to love

The harder it is to grasp

The more thornes it has

And there is nothing more beautiful than you.

"May our love live forever.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Love,

Cedric."

I was so touched by this. How could he give me something like that and not let me repay him?

One thing is for certain:

Harry Potter is out of the picture.

Definitely.

*** the second task ***

Wow, that was scary.

Scarier than Seven Days.

I was called into Dumbledore's office for some strange reason and then Ronald Weasley (Fred & George's brother), Hermione Granger and a girl who looked like a veela were there.

Next thing I know, I'm being told that I am Cedric's hostage, that I will be underwater with really ugly creatures called merpeople, and that I will be put into a magical sleep and I won't be harmed.

Do you have any idea how much that is for one person to take in at a time? I was having quite a hard time understanding all of this.

But I didn't have enough time to.

Next thing I know, I'm dreaming about Cedric. He was running towards me, his arms outstretched, and...

Well, that's all I dreamed. That's because about two seconds after I started dreaming, I was outside, dripping wet, and I smelled pretty nasty. Dumbledore was talking to a hideous-looking creature. I supposed that was a merperson. They were talking--if you could call it that--in really squeaky, high-pitched voices. I covered my ears. Ow!

After the champions were given points, we discovered that Harry and Cedric were tied for first place!

I didn't care. Cedric was mine.

Always.

*** a few months later (the third task) ***

Sorry, I lost my diary.

I don't see anyone coming out of the maze yet. Who won?! THE ANXIETY IS KILLING ME!!!

Oh, here comes someone now!

Well, it's a guy, with jet-black hair, shorter than the others, looks about fourteen...

Harry.

Wait, he's carrying something...

...or someone. What is it?

Ohmygod, it IS a human!

Oh my god.

That's...no, it couldn't be...no, it didn't happen, it's someone else...no...no...

Cedric.

*** Next day ***

Oh my god.

That's all I can say.

Write, I mean.

God, help me.

Save me.

It's not happening to me! No!

Cedric! Come out! I know you're hiding somewhere, holding the TriWizard Cup, grinning gleefully at that stunt you've just pulled to make me think you're dead. I know that this is a joke!

Stop it! It's not funny!

Cedric!

*** two hours later ***

Cedric.

Just to write the name, much less say it, gives me pain. I know that this is no joke.

He's gone.

Well, to be blunt.

I wish whole-heartedly that he would come back. I could see his wonderful, sincere face again, I could feel his warm arms around my shoulders, smell his minty breath, hear his honest voice in my ear...

And yet, he's gone.

Died.

Just like that.

Cedric, I love you.

*** three days later ***

I Love You Forever

I love you forever

What I shall do without you I know not.

Let your spirit stay with me always,

I love you forever.

I love you eternally

My love for you shall never die.

Let your spirit stay with me always,

I love you eternally.

I love you with my life.

My love for you is undying.

Do not leave me stranded,

Like you have just done,

For I have not an idea of what I shall do without you.

My life is ruined,

You have left.

I cannot bear life without you.

Just to write your name gives me pain.

Yet my love for you shall never die,

Never die,

Never die...

I love you forever

What I shall do without you I know not.

Let your spirit stay with me always,

I love you...

...Forever.
