The Long Kiss Goodbye

Snape sits in his office as Harry, who is in detention, stares directly at Snape. Harry slowly gets up and walks to the desk, and in a quivering voice asks.

Harry: Why do you hate me so much?

Snape: Its not you that I hate, it's my life. Your father didn't help much in making my life any better.

Harry: How so?

There is a fog as Snape waves his wand... the flashback begins. There's a long hallway which Harry knows leads to the great hall. He sees what appears to be a younger version of Snape walking down the hall with some girl. She is very pretty with long curly brown hair, soft blue eyes, and she is on the shorter side and is a part of the Gryffindor house.

Young Snape: Well Emily I have to be getting to potions I will see you at lunch.

Emily Arabella: Bye Serevus, thanks for walking me to class, I'll see ya.

At lunch... Emily is no where to be seen. Snape would go to her common room, except she is a Gryffindor. He sits all alone at his table until Prof. McGonagall walks towards him.

McGonagall: Serevus may I speak with you a moment in my office.

Snape: (confused) Sure.

They slowly enter her office and McGonagall sits down at her desk and motion for Serevus to sits in the chair next to her.

McGonagall: (sternly, yet sadly) I bet you were wondering why Emily was not at lunch today.

Snape: Yes, I was supposed to meet her... is something wrong??

McGonagall: Yes, Voldemort, well he, he murdered her parents.

Snape: No it can't be true! (He runs out of the room to find Emily.)

As he races down the hall he bumps into people. He's not even sure where he's going he just keeps running in hopes of finding her. As he rounds the corner of a hall he does not know he sees Emily stumbling towards him, tears are welled up in her eyes. She collapses into his arms and cries uncontrollably.

Snape: Its ok Emily, I'm here for you. We've been friends since we were three, I can take care of you. My family can help out too. (He now begins to cry, because her parents were more like his family then his own.)

Emily: Serevus, I don't know what to say or do. Thank you for being such a good friend to me, I could not live without you.

Snape: I will always be here for you no matter what happens. (He opens his mouth to tell her how much he loves her, but can't. He knows it's the last thing she needs to know.)

Emily lies in his arms as they cuddle on the floor together. She slowly cries herself to sleep. After about an hour Snape realizes he cannot feel his legs. He slowly moves her peaceful looking body, and kisses her on the cheek. He picks up her body and tries to walk but his legs wobble frantically. Once he regains his balance he carries her limp body to the Gryffindor common room. He approaches the picture and places her body on the ground next to him. He begins to pound on the wall for someone to let him in. The door opens and none other then James Potter is standing there. Serevus picks up Emily's body and starts to walk in the room.

James: Not so fast Serevus, where do you think your going? You know you're not allowed in here.

Snape: (trying to remain as calm as possible, he has never gotten along well with James) Prof. McGonagall told me to bring her here. (totally lying) She's had a hard day and I'm not leaving her side until she is in her bed where I know she is safe.

James: I still can't allow you to come in, it's against the rules.

Snape: Well seeing as Prof. McGonagall is the head of this house I believe she has more of a say then you do. Plus, I will not leave until my job is completed.

James: Why do you care anyways, a person like you does not associate with people like us?

Snape: She has been my neighbor and friend since we were three. I don't see why you care anyways about my personal life; you don't see me prying into yours.

James: Very well. (he cautiously let's Snape enter and shows him the way to the girls dormitories)

Snape sits on her bed and watches Emily until she wakes up about two hours later. When she wakes up she gives Snape a big hug and thanks him again for always being there for her. Snape kissed her on the forehead and started to leave to go to his own common room, until James stopped him right before the picture.

James: Sorry I gave you such a hard time before, I had no idea the two of you were friends.

Snape: The best, I could not live without her. You know you're very lucky to have a girl like Lily.

James: Thanks, and you to have a girl like Emily.

They smiled at each other for the first and only time ever. When Snape arrived at his common room everyone crowded around him. Rumors were flying that not only was he the only Slytherin to enter the Gryffindor common room, but also the first guy to ever see the girl's dormitories. After fighting them off, Lucius Malfoy approaches him and hands him a letter from the Ministry of Magic. Snape goes to his room and opens the letter and begins to read.

Dear Serevus Snape,

We at the Ministry hate to be the one's to tell you this, however someone must and it is our job to do so. You have probably already heard the news of your beloved family friends the Arabella's being murdered by Lord Voldemort. What we did not know earlier was your family was on vacation with the Arabella's at the time of this horrendous event. It is with sad hearts that we inform you that your parents died as well in the wrath of Lord Voldemort. We tried everything we could to revive both your parents and the Arabella's but there was no hope by the time we arrived. I know this must be a hard time for you that is why you and Emily will have the last month of school off to cope. Do not worry about your finals we have worked everything out with Prof. Dumbledore. You and your family are in our hearts and will never be forgotten.

Sincerely the Ministry of Magic

Snape tore out of the Slytherin common room, tears streaming down his face harder then ever on his way to get Emily. She however found him.

Emily: Oh Serevus I just heard. (hugging him) I guess now we only have each other.

Snape: That's all we ever had Emily, the love only true friends can have that can never be broken.

Emily: (sounding completely crazy) Serevus, will you run away with me.

Snape: Are you crazy? You know we can't leave the school.

Emily: The letter said we did, and I intend on leaving. (she started to pull him towards the door)

They exit the school building. When they get outside they realize it is thundering and lightning out. Snape tries to convince Emily to go back inside but it is no use. She runs towards the front lawn and hold her arms out.

Snape: Emily come back, your going to get yourself killed!

Emily: What do I have to live for anymore? Tell me that Serevus.

Snape: You have me, I love you.

Emily rushes up to Snape and kisses him.

Emily: I love you too. I just never thought I would hear you say those words.

Snape: I never thought I would say them either, but I mean it with all my heart.

Emily: I know you do, and I meant it too.

A small crowd has begun to form at the doorway because Snape had left the door open. Prof. McGonagall runs out telling them to come inside immediately. Emily looks into Snape's eyes and they slowly walk towards the doorway. A bolt of lightning suddenly comes rushing towards the ground.

James: (yelling) Serevus, Emily look out!!!!!!!

Snape tried to pull Emily away in time but it was too late. The lightning bolt had hit her. She fell into Snape arms and he slowly laid her on the ground. He held on to her hand tightly as he gazed into her soft pale blue eyes.

Snape: Someone get Madam Pomfry, quickly!

Prof. McGonagall runs to retrieve the nurse.

Snape: Emily you're going to live, you have too. I can't spend a day without you.

Emily: (faintly) I know Serevus, but you may have to. I'll try to hold on for you.

Snape: No you can't leave me, not now, not all by myself. Without you in my life I have no one.

Emily: I love you Serevus.

They kiss each other for the very last time. Her grip becomes soft and her face turned pale. Just then Madam Pomfry and Prof. McGonagall come running outside. By looking at Serevus' face they could tell they arrived too late.

James: I am so sorry I don't know what else I can say to you.

Snape: (coldly) There is nothing else you can do for me.

The next day at school everyone had known what happened. Everyone knew about Emily, about her parents, and mostly about Serevus. He was mocked and ridiculed, especially by James' friends. Although James himself never uttered a bad word about him Snape could not look him in the face again. Fades slowly out of the dream sequence, and back to Snape's office.

Snape: So now you know Harry, now you know why I can't trust or get close to anyone.

Harry: I am sorry to hear that Professor, but tell me how my father made your life worse.

Snape: He knew the whole story, and it pained me to look at him, especially since he was so happy with your mother. I also know the only reason your father "saved" my life was because he wanted to try and make things up for me.

Harry: Oh (he looked down at the ground)

Snape: The only reason I ever sided with Voldemort was the chance I might get close enough to kill him. It's what he deserves for not only killing my soul, but my family, Emily's family, and most importantly Emily. I could never forgive anyone from taking away the love of my life, ever. (there is a long uneasy pause) You may go now Potter, detention is over.
