Author's Note:
I'm trying to break away from the Mary Sue or whatever it is you guys call it. I'm also trying to work on using my own writing style instead of experimenting with those of others. So, resubmitted for your approval: Rave Dragon. For those awaiting my other works: Cruel: I thought I had it, but the chapter I was working on needs to be brought to my new house once more. Sorry. My next visit to my parents' house will be with a flash stick. When Universes Collide: Is anyone actually interested in this? I may continue work on it, as it's an interesting piece, but it won't receive the same effort as Cruel or Rave Dragon. This piece is from Snape's POV.

Rave Dragon

Prologue

He stood there, amidst darkness and brightly flashing lights, the magical device emitting blue beams throughout it which had been named the MMD version 7 (nickname: MedSeven), watching the girl who had organized it all. Hundreds of students were dancing, dozens were at tables, and a few sat at the bar. One in particular held his interest however.

She moved to the rhythm of the music as though no one were around her. She was a free spirit among all those confined. The clothes she wore resembled none he'd seen before. He was sure she designed them herself. The green shirt wrapped around her neck, crossing her chest and back, gathered high on her chest between her breasts, cupping them, and hanging down loose past her hips on one side. Her pants were tight and form fitting of some soft black fabric which shimmered in the multicolored lights, accenting her every feature. Her hair was green in the front, slicked against her head, avoiding her forehead. The rest of it was black, messy, and spiked, the spikes moving back until they just came off her head in the back, never touching her neck. Adorning her was a silver dragon pendant which she called Terra, a representation of who she was. She had on a pair of silver earrings, studs which linked to small silver bars that just came past her jaw. As a finishing touch, she had a few enchanted muggle items that had been registered with the ministry of magic: contacts which caused her eyes to glow red. The dark colors against her pale skin caused just the contrast that she loved.

The way she danced was erotic, every part of her body moving gracefully in a way no man could resist. It was all arousing in the absolute worst way. In image, she was every bit a woman. In mind, she had the personality of fifteen with abilities of a prodigy. In body, she was just of age. She had a gaze which could wither you or entice you. But for all of the massive appeal she had, no boy or man would touch her. There was always something about her that said she was dangerous, and not to be messed with. Yet somehow that too added to her appeal.

He too, was one of those males who could watch her and become aroused. Those that weren't were likely too young or had other preferences. Yet it was not why he watched. There was something about the girl which intrigued him. Not because she aroused him. He'd long put such things behind him. No, he wasn't even really attracted to her. She was both his best and worst student.

Kaida Ryu, whose names both translated to dragon, was 18, halfway through her seventh year. She was the inventor of the MedSeven, which she had been experimenting with since coming of age last year. Five feet and eight inches of untouchable sex-goddess beauty which was covered by robes all but when she was in bed or on these Friday nights. She looked like the perfect representation of a dark angel, and had black wings decorating most of her items in all forms and fashions.

Perhaps at another time, outside of war, he could have been attracted to her. Or perhaps if she didn't cause such trouble. Maybe if she left the attitude behind things would have been different. But as it was, this was one of the few times he could enjoy anything relatively close to her company.

She had actually arranged the whole thing with the teachers, and found the Room of Requirement was happy to help. She was always one to push forward. She got what she wanted, and likely would even if she wanted the world. He knew it had to be why she was in Slytherin. But this was why she intrigued him so much. She was the to-be Ravenclaw, though her true self had her put into Slytherin. He remembered how she cried that day, thinking it meant she was going to turn out evil or something. He had sat her down and assured her it just meant she had ambition, though many with ambition found horrible ways to use it. She had resolved that day that she would use her ambition to change things.

Much of her inspiration had to do with her being brought up in the muggle world, he was sure. The family was rich, coming from a long line of pure-blooded Ravenclaws on either side. In order to ensure they had a good grasp of the muggle world, the children were sent to muggle schools; something he remembered Kaida saying she hated. Oh, she loved the computers, the CD players, the DVD players, the TVs... All of it. But she didn't like having to be away from wizarding for such large amounts of time. She was very glad when she was pulled from the grammar school to attend Hogwarts.

She was excellent at Potions, and often seemed to be bored. Charms did her well enough. Transfiguration seemed to give her the real challenge. Unfortunately, she couldn't seem to leave the muggle world behind, either. Most of her skills and abilities were used in recreating muggle items which would work at Hogwarts. The MedSeven was one of these, and played much of the music she'd enjoyed there. She didn't recreate things to precision, however, since she knew she could make them so much better. If someone looked at the MedSeven, for example.

The MedSeven (MMD v.7) was a Magical Music Device, one of the many things Kaida had wanted to introduce into the wizarding world. And something that may even catch on. Her current system was limited to its current use. The thing was still in testing phases, and for entertainment use only. This now sat in her makeshift night club, named Cyberia after a Japanese show she would watch in the muggle world. No one else really knew what it meant, since very few even knew the term cyber, but many suspected it had to do with the music she played. The MedSeven would keep up to six crystals, which held the music, lines running through the entire system and connecting the crystal ports to one another. These became alight with the very entry of a crystal, lighting everything with the inherent energies there. The light would then pulse outward, creating patterns throughout the system, matching the beat of the music. This was her pride and joy.

It was his too, watching the MedSeven work. It was one of those things that reminded him Kaida was his star pupil. He hated it at times, however, for without it he felt this nightclub wouldn't exist. If it didn't exist, he wouldn't he here, watching her, becoming more aroused with every passing beat. But the events had to be watched, and this week it was his turn. Though as much as he hated it, there was one thing he would never admit: He was glad for it too.

He glanced at the time then walked toward the MedSeven, struggling to get through the mass of teenagers which surrounded him. Kaida backed into him, causing a small struggle in wanting to stay there, though it was one he was always destined to win. He moved her off to the side slightly and tapped a corner of MedSeven, which flashed an indicator at him.

Kaida came up next to him, groaning. "Time already? I was just getting started."

"I'm sure you were," he said dryly. "However, curfew is in fifteen minutes and everyone needs time to get back to their dorms before then."

She sighed. "I know. Well, at least we get a few hours." She looked around, surveying everyone. "They all look so relaxed. Like they've forgotten everything that's going on outside. No one's thinking of death, no one's sad. No one's remembering that they're an orphan, or that they've lost brothers and sisters. In a few minutes, the music's going to quiet, and the MedSeven will be shut down." She looked back to him. "How long, do you think, until they forget this place and think nothing of the war again?"

His expression hardened, hiding what he was feeling. "Less than an hour, I believe. Once they're in their beds and have nothing to distract them."

This was the other thing he couldn't stand about her. Why he couldn't be in her company. This was why she could have even done well in Gryffindor, had she not been so obsessed in her ways. Had she not been so proud of being a pureblood, had she not looked down on muggles no matter how she enjoyed aspects of their world. Had she not been forced into things she could have otherwise enjoyed. But she was rebellious, and she was virtuous and courageous as well. However, her ambition and tendencies towards purebloods brought her into Slytherin, and her virtues and courage only modifiers toward her ambition, creating things not just great, but wondrous and beautiful. Things, that had she not made him struggle for control with her sad thoughts of peace and student despair, he would admit suited her perfectly. Everything she did and created was an embodiment of herself.

And he couldn't stand it.

She sighed, thinking on his comment. The music ended, the light from MedSeven faded away, the students yawned and finished their butterbeers, and she collected the crystals from the now-dead MedSeven.

Thinking he could be soft, just a little, and just this once, he said, "don't let it depress you. It will all be over soon enough." As he walked away, he could hear her whisper: "I hope so." Why, he wondered, did she have to sting his chest like that?

The students filed out, talking with one another, heading for their dorms. Too soon, only he and Kaida were left. She quietly cleaned up, packing glasses and butterbeer away, singing softly to herself. She put on her coat, a long black thing which reached her ankles, made only for show. It had a high collar which circled her neck, barely keeping from touching her jaw line. It was made of some shiny material that reflected light like glass. It was worn open, revealing what she wore that night. When she turned to take her bag from the bar, he saw the trademark black wings on the back, embroidered just at the spine coming up to the shoulder blades. They weren't feathery, but rather simple: a spiral that led to the tip of the wing, then softly returned.

She walked toward the door, a box of bottles and glasses in her arms, her handbag of crystals sitting precariously on the top. She walked out the door, then watched him close the door behind her, the whole thing disappearing. She hated leaving MedSeven in there, but it was always there when she came back. "Goodnight, Professor."

He nodded to her and watched her walk away. He turned to make his rounds when he heard her called back to him.

"Professor Snape!" She smiled, tilting her head. "Thanks for watching." And she left.

He growled at the memory of her dancing that the very mention called back to his mind and he decided to return to his room instead.

As much as I would love to think I can avoid the image of self-insertion, I can't find a way to do it. When I originally created the character of Kaida, she was part of a story about a girl who was the disappointment of her family of Ravenclaws and desperately needed to become a Ravenclaw herself. Instead she ended up in Slytherin. It was going to be her struggle. In the end, the story was never written. Instead the name was used to name the new baby of two characters in a role-playing chat: Zellanna and Val Ryu. As a result, when I was writing Cruel, I was in desperate need for a writing name. Everything that was typed into that little box was taken (admittedly, I wasn't very creative). Then I typed in Kaida and I had it. So I made my Pen Name Kaida Ryu. Later I read a bunch of Severitus Challence fics and was inspired to look at a softer side of Snape. I thought he deserved a romance story that wouldn't necessarily end in heartbreak. With my limited knowledge, I needed an original character. I looked back through old notes, old characters, and sought out the one that would suit Snape best. It was Kaida. I was ecstatic that I had a character who's background could be twisted into something usable in dealing with Snape. When I got to the submission page I realized that my pen name was the same as my character. Do I change my pen name or my character name? I decided against either and just submitted. A mistake, I now see. However, one that I can't bring myself to correct even now. The only solution I can see is to change my pen name to something that closer reflects myself, but I don't know if there are problems which arise from that. Like having to build a new author reputation or something, or the fact that I was resubmitting Rave Dragon under a different name, people would already know. If anyone has a suggestion for if something like this happens in the future, please enlighten me. It could be as simple as me overthinking the situation. I'm pretty good at overthinking.
