The seventh years and whomever they invited were having a ball in honour of their graduation. It seemed as if all the Houses forgot their rivalries between each other just to have a good time, particularly the Gryffindors and the Slytherins. The student body was pretty impressed from the lack of loud name-calling and rude gesturing. Especially from between James Potter and his friends and Severus Snape and his friends.

In fact, James was far from thinking about Snape. His thoughts were focused solely on a dark, red-haired girl with verdant eyes that seemed to swirl endlessly like a vortex. While others were dancing light heartedly with their partners, James was staring at the back of this girl's head. The name of this girl echoing beautifully within his mind.

Lily.

You've got a cute way of talking

You got the better of me

James was shaken from his daydream when Lily slowly began approaching him, walking with such a radiant grace that other girls didn't seem to possess. Just looking at her brought him to thinking of the way her voice melodically rang in his ears. When she stopped right in front of him, he believed that he lost the ability to speak coherently.

"Hey, James," she said, barely above a whisper, which sent delightful shivers down James' back. He wished that he'd hear her say his name for all the days of his life. A smile spread across her face, her green eyes sparkling merrily, and she held her hand out for him. "Do you want to dance?" she asked.

James looked from her face, to her hand and back to her face, his mind reeling with embarrassing outcomes that could happen if he accepted. He could trod on her toes a bit too much and word would leak that James Potter was a terrible dancer and Lily would be so disgusted with him that she'd never want him to be a part of her life. But as if an invisible force was tugging at his heart, he heard himself say, "Sure, why not?" and take her hand.

You put a spell on me

I'm right where you want me to be

Reflecting on this night, Lily would have no idea how tight James' stomach had twisted, or how vaguely aware he was that there was anyone else in the Hall. The only thing that existed was he and Lily. Lily, holding his hand and gently pulling him towards the dance floor. Her hands felt so soft, that James wondered if the rest of her skin was as smooth...

That train of thought ended once Lily wrapped her arms around his neck, and he felt his arms go around her waist on instinct. They began dancing, slowly and a little bit far apart, but comfortable nonetheless. When the song ended, neither of them showed any sign to let go of each other. They were simply staring at each other...emerald eyes locking into blue sapphire ones...so intense, as if scanning for faults of any kind. Apparently, Lily found nothing wrong with James because she moved closer to him so that every part of their bodies was touching. The next slow song was playing in the background, and James found Lily's head slowly coming into contact with his shoulder.

Lily couldn't see him, but James smiled and clutched her tighter, but not so tight that she'd notice. He didn't want this night to ever end. Swaying with Lily forever seemed like the perfect life to him.

You make me feel like dancing

I want to dance the night away

Alas, the last slow song ended, and people began getting ready to leave. Not James and Lily though. They continued to swing peacefully, as if the song kept on playing. Like it'd never stop. Something about being with Lily didn't make James think that dancing, even without the music, was stupid. But soon, calls from their friends reached their ears and broke the trance they were in. Lily looked up into his face, but then looked down again.

"Well, I guess this is goodnight. You're a really good dancer, you know," she said. James grinned appreciatively and engulfed her in a hug. A hug that meant much more than just being friends. He hoped she'd be able to interpret that.

"Thanks, you're not so bad yourself," he said, tilting her head up to look at him again. She smiled a small, innocent smile, one that made James' knees buckle slightly. And for the multiple time that night, both their eyes locked together, reading each other out. Their heads lowered, and the two shared a timid, tender but overall sweet kiss on the lips. Lily's lips held the smallest hint of raspberries, James thought dazedly to himself.

They broke it off, and even though it lasted under two seconds, the room seemed to be spinning. "I guess I'll be seeing you around then," Lily said.

"Yeah...I'll walk you to your dorm?" James asked. They set off together, walking in silence, James inwardly grinning to himself like an idiot.

You take me higher

"Well, we're here. Goodnight...again," Lily said. No one made a move to be the first to go. James didn't even want to go! But, he knew, that eventually the night had to end.

"Goodnight...Lily," James said, barely above a whisper. Lily received the same reaction James got when she said his name like that. A final kiss and they departed. Once out of sight from everyone's eyes, especially Lily's, James did a little dance on his own...

You make me feel like dancing

I wanna dance the night away

You make me feel like dancing

I'm gonna dance my life away

And one thought reigned in his mind...he wouldn't mind one bit if Lily was the one he had to share all his dances with for the rest of his life.

...and if you'll let me stay we'll dance our lives away
