Author's Note:
My first attempt at a fanfic. For those who are wondering, Marlene McKinnon was a former member of the Order (she's in the picture Moody shows) and I like to think of Sita as the mother of Parvati and Padma.

Git

'Git.'

Lily Evans plunged her feet back in the lake, causing the cold water to splash over her friends.

'Stupid, arrogant git.'

'Well, at least they're teaching him a lesson,' said a blonde, angry-looking and dripping wet girl sitting next to Lily. 'He deserves it, calling you a -'

'Not him,' said Lily in an irritated tone. 'I'm used to Snape, Marlene. He's just annoying. Well, very annoying. But compared to that - stupid - he's such a - git...'

'Who?' Marlene asked.

'Oh, Marlene,' answered Alice, a friendly-looking girl with a happy round face. She was Lily's best friend. 'The one boy Lily really despises?'

'James Potter, of course,' said another girl. She had very beautiful long dark hair, and her name was Sita. 'The most arrogant...'

'...bullying...'

'...vain...'

'...useless...'

'...git in Hogwarts,' Lily concluded.

'I know, but he's so handsome,' Marlene sighed. 'Not as gorgeous as Sirius, of course. Nobody is. But he's still stunning!'

'He is n-'

Lily hesitated. She hated lying, and James Potter was very good-looking. He just acted like a silly baby. 'Well, maybe he is. But he's not nice. None of them is,' she said resolutely.

'That's not true,' said Alice. 'Remus is nice. He never just hexes people, and he almost never laughs when they do.'

'Yeah, well, he doesn't stop them either, does he?' Lily argued. 'But you're right, he's not as bad as Sirius or James, or that horrid, spineless Peter.'

'He really likes you, you know,' Alice teased her.

'Peter?' Lily laughed.

'No, silly,' Sita answered. 'James.'

'And the squid could never buy you any flowers,' Marlene added.

'Ha ha,' Lily said.

'No, really,' Alice said. 'He might stop acting so stupid when he's older.'

'He might,' Lily shrugged. 'I don't think so - but then again, you're often right. Let's not talk about him. Git. Have you seen Frank today?'

Alice smiled happily. Lily thought she had a good reason to; Frank Longbottom was a very nice boy and seemed to really like Alice.

'Ooh, you did!' said Marlene. 'You're so lucky, he really fancies you-'

Alice blushed deeply. 'He just asked me to Hogsmeade, that doesn't mean he likes me.'

And a Cleansweep doesn't fly, Lily thought. Frank had turned a bright crimson whenever he saw Alice - since their first year. Alice couldn't stop smiling when he was around. Sirius had thought it his duty to get some profit out of this and almost every Griffindor had put money on their first kiss.

'It does the way he did it!' Marlene laughed. 'Er... yeah, I was erm.... wondering if... if... you... you er... would like... erm... butterbeer. At the Three Broomsticks, I mean. With er... well, well, with me. Next Hogsmeade weekend. Yes, I bet he simply hates you, Alice!'

The group laughed loudly, teasing Alice about her date.

Lily wasn't listening. She was looking at the boys, who finally had let Snape go. James was laughing and trying to catch the Snitch again. It zoomed over his head, and for a second he looked at Lily. He made eye-contact with her and smiled. Lily couldn't help it, she smiled back. Then, as if he remembered something, James straightened his back and ruffled his hair. Lily looked away, annoyed.

'Git,' she muttered softly, but not as angrily as she would have liked.
