They waited until Harry, Marauder's Map in hand, was out of earshot to hear anything incriminating before they spoke again.
"I still can't believe you convinced me to give him the map like that," George said reproachfully, "because how do we know we'll be able to pull off everything we do without that map?" George stood there, arms crossed and hair slightly tousled in frustration.
Fred gave him an elbow in the arm. "Oh, come on bro, you know perfectly well that we've been getting away with so much as murder lately without that map." George rolled his eyes as Fred continued sternly, "Besides, our Seeing has been significantly less dodgey in the past 3 months. For a week or two before I told you we'd try to get on without the map, I wasn't using the map in the first place. I just said it to build you some confidence."
"I can't believe I didn't pick that up from you!" George said in disbelieve, "I can usually tell when you're about to pull on over me."
Fred gave a slight grin. "I've been working on my Blocking as well lately. I haven't been able to trick you yet, besides the map of course." George gave a slight grin at that and they proceeded on towards Filch's office.
George, with more confidence in hand, closed his eyes for concentration. "Filch...hmm...oh, there he is. Seventh floor, third corridor. Wonder what he's doing there...Aha! It's Peeves. Must be throwing dungbombs at first years again. That'll keep Filch in a right state."
They approached Filch's office, Fred pulled out his wand and muttered Alohomora and both walked into the office towards Filch's stash of confiscated items.
"What shall we nick, what shall we nick," George mumbled maliciously as they feasted their eyes on the treasure trove in front of them. They stood there looking over all of the Dungbombs, Whizzing Wizard Fireworks, Hiccup Sweets, Frog Spawn Soap, and other Zonko's products, their eyes alight with satisfaction.
"We could use some more Nose-biting Teacups to test with our Insta-Glue Tea we've been working on," Fred suggested. George gave an assured nod and added, "we should go ahead and take back our Ton-Tongue Toffee's he took from us, the git." They filled their cloaks with the goods and set off toward Gryffindor Tower.
"It looks like the common room has a few people still around...Mmm, but the dormitories are quite vacant. And they look to stay that way for a while," commented Fred as he opened his eyes again.
"Good, we'll need all the privacy we can get if we want to finish up on this tea and start on some sort of chew for skiving off lessons," said George, "because I can see those going over really well."
They ascended the stairs to Gryffindor Tower, George mumbled Dragon Snot and both entered the common room. They saw the few people that were to leave for dinner finishing up what they were doing. They spotted Harry, Ron, and Hermione by the fire, deep in conversation. "Let's make and appearance and then go up," suggested Fred as they walked to the fire.
"...can't believe they would do something so irresponsible," finished Hermione, turning a shade of pink as she spotted the twins within earshot.
"You should know us by now, Hermione," commented George mischievously. "Yeah, Hermione, 'irresponsible' is our middle name," finished Fred.
"But still," Hermione started, "you know with all the dangers around it was quite dimwitted to give Harry that map. You could've caused him to get hurt or killed."
"Well, we'll see about that, shall we not, Fred," George consummated, with a sly grin on his face.
"Oh, we shall," said Fred. At that, both ascended the stairs to their dormitory, leaving Hermione steaming and Harry and Ron more baffled than ever.
Author notes: In the dormitory, Fred and George begin to 'predict' the outcome of their jokes they're inventing, and they begin to See more than they bargained for...
